Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter5: First step

  • Next Chapter

The machine’s hum deepened, resonating through the chamber floor and up through Gene’s bones. It sounded less like machinery and more like an immense creature exhaling.

Moira folded her arms.

“You should know that the first summon is the most important moment in a summoner’s life.”

“No pressure.”

“Your initial summon often defines your future path here. If done correctly, they can be your protection as well as a friend.”

Gene swallowed.

All the  jokes aside, his pulse had begun to race.

This was really happening.

He was standing in another world.

And he was about to bring a fictional character to life.

He took several deep breaths as he approached the Chronicle Forge.

The black stone slab at its center shimmered, transforming into a surface of liquid darkness. Silver text appeared.

ENTER CHARACTER DESCRIPTION

Below the prompt floated a blank field.

Gene’s fingers twitched.

He had spent his life describing fictional people.

Now his words would become flesh.

“What should I summon?” he asked quietly.

Moira looked genuinely puzzled.

“Whatever you believe will ensure your survival.”

Gene glanced at the empty field.

His mind raced through possibilities.

Heroes.

Wizards.

Super soldiers.

Dragons.

All powerful, all useful.

But there was a problem.

This world already knew those archetypes. Summoners here had likely spent centuries refining descriptions of knights, mages, and monsters.

Gene would be competing against experts.

He decided that he needed something they had never seen before.

Something born from the deepest darkest corners of Earth’s imagination.

A horror icon.

But which one?

Not something too powerful.

Not too vague.

Not too independent.

He needed a creature that was:

• Extremely Durable.

• Fear-inducing.

• Obedient. But has free will.

• Simple to describe.

A shape formed in his mind.

A tall figure.

White mask.

Dark work clothes.

Slow, relentless footsteps.

The embodiment of inevitable death.

Gene smiled.

“Oh, I know exactly who to call.”

He placed his hands on the black surface.

Words poured from his thoughts onto the glowing slate.

A tall, silent man wearing a blank white mask and dark work clothing. He moves slowly when seen but never tires, relentlessly pursues designated targets. He possesses immense physical strength, extraordinary durability, and an unnatural ability to instill fear. He does not speak. He does not hesitate. He follows his summoner’s commands with unwavering obedience and protects his assigned territory. He is upgradable. His primary weakness is fire and complete bodily destruction.

The final period appeared.

The Forge went silent.

For one dreadful second, nothing happened.

Then every crystal ring began to spin.

Blue-white energy surged through the machine.

The chamber shook.

Warning sigils flared scarlet across the floating screens.

Moira’s composure shattered.

“Gene,” she said sharply, “what exactly did you just summon?!?”

Gene shrugged as he took one step backward.

“Basically, I made a serial killer with excellent work ethic.”

The machine roared.

The pool of darkness at its center bulged outward like black water under pressure.

A shape began to emerge.

First came a boot.

Heavy, worn leather dripping with shadow.

Then another.

Dark coveralls.

Broad shoulders.

And finally a pale, expressionless mask covering a face.

Two hollow eye sockets stared out from a face as blank and emotionless as a gravestone.

The figure stood over seven feet tall.

He carried a large kitchen knife in one hand.

For several heartbeats, no one moved.

Gene felt the air grow colder.

Even standing still, the masked figure radiated a sense of impossible wrongness.

It was not mere hostility.

It was the inevitability of your end.

The certainty that no locked door, no desperate sprint, no pleading would matter.

Moira instinctively stepped backward a few steps, hand on her crystal wand.

“By the Seven Towers…”

The masked figure turned his head toward Gene.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

The motion sent a spike of instinctive terror through Gene’s chest.

He forced himself to stand firm.

He smiled maniacally as he felt goosebumps through out his body.

A translucent prompt appeared.

DESIGNATE NAME

Gene thought for a moment.

Somehow, this creature felt more than a horror movie villain.

It was his the first of his summons.

His first actual creation.

“His name will be… The Caretaker.”

The words echoed.

The screen changed.
