Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 7: The new domain

This time, before he even could scream, he landed softly.

“I am truly tired of falling”, Gene blinked the dirt out his eyes.

As he looked down he saw a wonderful sight.

Grass.

That is to say that it was the most beautiful grass he had ever seen in his life.

The air around them smelled faintly of rain and flowers.

He stood up in the middle of an open field, he couldn’t help but stare in awe of the veiw.

The sky was painted in deep twilight hues, violet bleeding seamlessly into the rolling amber along the horizon.

The air was crisp, cool, yet strangely still, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

Behind him, a simple structure stood.

A gate.

Massive, black, and wrought from ancient stones.

The imposing stone gate was penetrated by various metals intertwined and snaking out like veins.

Floating above its arch were two words seemingly carved in the air in glowing script:

NEW DOMAIN

“Alrighty Gene, you are now standing in your personal pocket domain,” Moira announced.

Gene turned to look at her.

The Caretaker was standing menacingly beside him.

Gene flinched.

The Caretaker stood Motionless.

Waiting.

Gene watched as the Caretaker raised  his hand and pointed at the gate behind Gene.

Moira was kneeling and quietly inspecting the opening panel on the gate.

“Ah. Thank you for pointing the way friend.”

The group of three continued forward, stepping past the gate and into the dimming light.

Moira looked less composed than before, her eyes scanning the environment with a sharpened focus.

“This is where you will be building your new domicile.”

Gene Rubbed his hands together in eagerness.

“That definitely sounds way cooler than receiving a ‘starter home.’”

“This world is technically your controlled reality space,” she continued, completely ignoring him.

“Every summoner receives one. It is usually shaped by your first summon but you alap have the an ability to use an initial narrative imprint.”

Gene looked around again.

The landscape stretched outward in all directions, but not infinitely.

In the distance, jagged silhouettes of half-formed terrain flickered like an unfinished painting.

In the middle, the world seemed stable—fields, hills, a river cutting through a dark forest before spilling out into a serene lake.

The other side… was not finished.

It shimmered.

Like reality was still buffering.

“That side looks like my old laptop trying to load Skyrim,” Gene said.

Moira frowned. “I am unfamiliar with that reference.”

“Lucky you.”

“You will be able to expand your domain using points. There are even ways to fill your world with living breathing creatures as well.”

A notification appeared in the air.

⸻

DOMAIN INITIALIZATION COMPLETE

ATTRIBUTE ALIGNMENT: HORROR-BASED CONSTRUCT DETECTED

ENVIRONMENTAL TRAITS APPLIED:

• Low Light Amplification

• Fear Resonance Field

• Fog Generation (Passive)

• Sound Dampening Zones

• Memory Distortion Edges

⸻

Gene read through the list slowly.

“Memory distortion sounds kind of concerning.”

Moira nodded. “It means that any intruders will have difficulty recalling your domain layout.”

“That’s either very useful or extremely unethical.”

“In this world, those are often the same thing.”

Gene accepted that without an argument.

The Caretaker tilted his head, as if sensing something beneath the ground.

The grass around him darkened slightly, as though even they were afraid to grow too brightly near him.

Then the gate behind them flared.

Stone shifted.

Metal groaned.

And a second structure began to rise beside it.

Gene stared.

“What is that?”

Moira followed his gaze.

Her expression softened slightly.

“I believe that this is…”, she opened her note pad and quickly searched through her writings.

“This seems to be a Domain Core expansion.”

The ground cracked and splintered as a building emerged from below the earth.

It resembled the combination of fortress and a gothic cathedral.

The dark stone walls embedded with glowing veins of blue and red crystals.

Heavy wooden doors made deep cracking noises as  they pushed outwards through the stone walls.

Windows lit themselves from within.

And above the entrance, a sign appeared in flickering script:

GINGERLINE DOMAIN HUB

Gene looked over to Moira shocked.

“Well… I did not expect there would be a house.”

“You did not have to,” Moira said. “The Forge interprets your summon and constructs a compatible living environment.”

The structure groaned as it stabilized.

The heavy front doors clacked as they opened.

Warm light spilled out.

And from inside, Gene heard something unexpected.

Music.

Not eerie or ominous.

But music that was fairly lively.

Like the soundtrack to the opening menu of a video game.

Gene blinked.

“Is that…?”

“Yes,” Moira said. “Your Domain Hub.”

“Why does my horror domain have elevator music?”

“It is not elevator music.”

She paused.

“It is adaptive ambience.”

“That pretty much sounds like elevator music with a marketing degree.”

Moira gestured towards the entrance.

“Go inside. You should familiarize yourself with your resources.”

Gene hesitated briefly before finally walking forward.

The Caretaker followed behind him.

Completely silently.

Moria shivered as she followed behind them.

The Caretaker’s footsteps did not match the distance he moved his legs.

He moved almost as if he were on skates, the ground under him made no sound at all.

Gene, clueless of the Caretaker, continued inside.
