Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 57: The Chaos Armor Awakens

  • Next Chapter

The library exploded into motion.

The cultist holding Lyra jerked backward suddenly as something massive slammed through the doorway like a freight train made of fur and muscle.

A monstrous black blur crossed the room.

Then came the screaming.

Wet horribly out of tune screaming.

Fluffy crashed into the cultists with enough force to shatter the bookshelves apart.

Three enormous heads roared simultaneously.

One head bit down on the arm restraining Lyra.

Bone cracked instantly.

Fluffy shook his head flinging the man into a stack of books.

The severed limb flew across the library trailing blood.

The cultist holding Lyra didn’t even finish screaming before fluffy’s second head clamped around his torso.

CRUNCH.

His spine folded violently as he was pulled into the air.

The third head seized the cultist by the legs and slammed him into the floor repeatedly until the man resembled wet meat more than a human being.

Blood sprayed across ancient bookshelves.

Lilith pumped both fists excitedly.

“YAY FLUFFY!”

The giant Cerberus barked happily despite the corpse bits dangling wetly from one of its mouths.

Lyra stumbled backward shaking violently.

Selene rushed forward immediately to steady her.

“You’re okay now! You are in a safe place.”

The cultist with the shattered arm tried crawling away across the floor.

He made it three feet.

Then Fluffy stepped on his head.

The skull burst beneath one paw with a loud popping crunch.

Silence fell for exactly one second as fluffy sniffed the corpse.

Then slow clapping echoed from above.

Everyone looked upward.

Several masked cultists stood around the massive hole in the library ceiling.

At least fifteen.

Some carried staffs.

Others crossbows.

A few wore heavy enchanted armor.

And all of them stared downward with fanatical hatred.

One stepped forward slowly.

Unlike the others, his white mask bore a hollow crown symbol carved into the forehead.

His voice echoed coldly through the ruined library.

“You cling desperately to this dying age.”

Blood dripped from the broken ceiling behind him.

The cult leader spread both arms dramatically.

“The Hollow King will rise again.”

Thunder boomed outside.

“The worlds will kneel beneath the endless dark.”

His voice grew louder.

“Dreams will rot.”

“Nightmares will feed.”

“And you—”

The speech ended abruptly.

Because one of Selene Mooncrest’s dragons suddenly lunged through the shattered ceiling.

The massive silver dragon bit the cultist cleanly in half.

Everyone stared.

The upper torso dangled briefly from the dragon’s jaws.

Then disappeared in a spray of blood and armor fragments.

The remaining cultists recoiled in shock.

Selene blinked.

“…That was kind of rude.”

The dragon looked extremely pleased with itself as it flew off to fight more of the cultist horde.

⸻

Fire Rain

“ATTACK!”

The surviving cultists unleashed magic instantly.

Massive fireballs roared downward into the library.

Explosions erupted everywhere.

Bookshelves ignited.

Wood shattered apart.

Aurelia screamed as blazing debris crashed across the room.

Cassian raised barriers desperately.

Moira tackled Lyra behind a reinforced table.

Fluffy roared furiously while shielding Lilith beneath its massive body.

Gene reacted instinctively.

The chaos armor exploded across his body.

Black slime surged upward from the headband and necklace simultaneously.

It swallowed his arms first.

Then his chest.

Then everything.

The three gems resting nearby reacted violently.

Blue.

Red.

Purple.

All three flew toward him instantly.

The slime armor absorbed them.

Pain detonated through Gene’s nervous system.

System alerts flashed wildly across his vision.

GEM INTEGRATION DETECTED

EVOLUTION PROTOCOL ACTIVATED

CHAOS ARMOR ADAPTING

The firestorm hit.

Gene threw himself forward.

The explosions slammed directly into him.

Heat beyond anything human flooded across his body—

Then vanished.

The armor absorbed everything.

Flames disappeared into the black slime mass coating him.

The library shook violently.

Smoke filled the air.

Then slowly—

Gene stood.

Everyone stared.

The chaos armor had changed completely.

No longer merely armor.

Now it resembled a living abyss.

Black slime-metal covered Gene entirely in shifting layers.

Purple crystalline veins pulsed across the surface.

Blue energy glowed beneath translucent sections.

Red flame-like patterns moved constantly beneath the armor skin.

His right arm had transformed into a massive clawed weapon.

His left shifted endlessly between shapes.

His face remained mostly hidden beneath a dark helmet-like mass with glowing silver eyes.

Even Gene stared at his own hands briefly.

“…Oh.”

A distorted version of his voice echoed from the armor.

“…this is… AWESOME.”

⸻

Gene Joins the Fight

The cultists hesitated.

That was their mistake.

Gene launched himself upward.

The library floor exploded beneath him.

He crashed through the broken ceiling directly into the invading cultists like a missile.

The first one died instantly.

Gene’s claw punched through his chest entirely.

The armor absorbed the blood before it even touched the floor.

The second cultist tried firing lightning magic.

Gene caught the spell in one hand.

The chaos armor consumed it.

Then Gene slammed the cultist through a stone pillar hard enough to turn him into paste.

System notifications flashed constantly.

ENERGY ABSORBED

ADAPTATION IN PROGRESS

Gene laughed.

Actually laughed.

The armor felt incredible.

Every movement flowed naturally.

Every impact sent information directly into his nervous system.

Like controlling a video game character with perfect responsiveness.

“Oh I am definitely becoming a cheat character now.”

Three cultists unleashed explosive spells simultaneously.

Gene raised one arm.

The slime armor expanded outward into a massive black shield.

The explosions vanished into the surface harmlessly.

Then the armor fired the absorbed energy back.

A beam of compressed fire and lightning ripped through the corridor.

Bodies exploded apart instantly.

One cultist lost both legs.

Another simply vanished from the waist upward.

Gene landed heavily amidst the carnage.

The hallway around him resembled a slaughterhouse already.

And then…

The hotel monsters arrived.

⸻

The Hotel Feeds Again

The hallway lights died.

The temperature dropped sharply.

Mother Sarah emerged from the shadows behind the cultists.

Moving across the walls carrying a freshly severed face.

The cultists panicked instantly.

“MONSTER!”

Mother Sarah’s claws sliced through one man’s throat before he finished screaming.

Another cultist turned to flee directly into Jesse Belle.

The southern horror woman swung her axe casually.

The cultist split diagonally from shoulder to hip.

Blood painted the hallway.

“Evenin’.”

Behind her—

The Caretaker appeared.

Silent.

Towering.

His new black titanium mask reflected the emergency lights beautifully.

One cultist fired enchanted bolts toward him.

The Caretaker ignored them completely.

The arrows shattered uselessly against his body.

Then he grabbed the cultist by the face.

Lifted him overhead.

And slammed him hard enough in the ceiling to burst the man apart.

Another cultist screamed prayers to the Hollow King.

The Caretaker shoved the chicken knife upward through the cultist’s jaw.

The blade exited through the top of the skull.

The blade made the sound of a crowing hen and the sound of frying chicken pierced the silence.

The cultists nose smoked as the knife deep fried his brain and eyes from the inside.

The giant horror summon slowly tilted his head while curdled blood and oil poured down the chicken blades hilt.

Then he slashed his cleaver sideways.

Half the cultist’s head slid off.

Jesse Belle whistled approvingly.

“Oh babe, I didn’t know you could cook so well! I reckon I learn somethin’ new about ya everyday.”

⸻

The Heavy Weapons

Gene sprinted through the collapsing upper floor corridors.

His HUD marked several massive energy signatures nearby.

Siege weapons.

The cult had brought magical artillery.

He burst through a reinforced wall directly into the hotel rooftop section.

Dozens of cultists occupied the roof.

Several enormous enchanted cannons aimed toward the hotel towers.

One cult mage shouted immediately.

“KILL HIM!”

Spells erupted everywhere.

Lightning.

Ice.

Spears of shadow.

The chaos armor adapted instantly.

Ice froze across Gene’s body.

Lightning vanished into the armor surface.

Shadow magic dissolved harmlessly.

Gene’s body expanded suddenly.

The slime armor grew larger.

Bulkier.

More monstrous.

Tentacles burst from his back.

“I guess you guys came prepared.”

Then he attacked.

Gene slammed into the first cannon crew like a tidal wave.

Black tendrils impaled three cultists simultaneously.

Another cultist got grabbed by the leg and used as a club against his allies.

Bones shattered everywhere.

One cultist tried a last ditch effort to activating the cannon.

Gene seized the weapon with both hands.

The armor expanded over the cannon surface instantly.

Absorbing it.

Metal dissolved into the slime mass.

System windows flashed rapidly.

NEW MATERIAL ACQUIRED

WEAPON SYSTEMS INTEGRATED

Gene’s right arm transformed immediately.

A massive cannon barrel formed from shifting slime-metal.

Gene blinked.

“…Okay now that’s a bit much even to me.”

Then fired.

The blast vaporized half the rooftop.

⸻

The Army Breaks

Below the hotel, the invading cult army finally began retreating.

Not because they were losing.

Because the hotel itself was killing them.

Dragons circled overhead breathing fire.

Ravens pecked out eyes.

The marionettes hunted survivors that made it in the corridors.

The mimic had somehow grown larger.

And every horror summon fought like enraged predators defending their territory.

Gene crashed through another group of cultists.

The chaos armor throbbed and roared around him like a living storm.

He no longer resembled a person.

Now he looked like the final boss of some obscure indie game.

And the cultists completely feared him.

One screamed while backing away.

“Nooo… The prophecy….”

Gene slapped him through a chimney.

The cultist exploded into red mist and shattered bricks.

The remaining invaders broke formation completely.

Most died before making it more than ten feet.

⸻

The Ravens

After nearly twenty brutal minutes—

The battle finally slowed.

Bodies covered the hotel grounds.

Fire burned across broken siege weapons.

Rain washed blood through the stone paths like rivers.

Gene stood amidst the destruction breathing heavily.

The chaos armor slowly shifted around him.

Still adapting.

Then a raven landed on his shoulder.

One of Lilith’s.

Gene immediately recognized the message magic.

The raven opened its beak.

Lilith’s voice emerged.

“Gene! Battle is done upstairs!”

Gene sighed in relief.

Then the raven continued.

“But we got surrounded by more of those weird mask people!”

Gene froze.

“What?”

“They are having us go through a warp gate now!”

Cassian shouted faintly somewhere in the background.

Aurelia yelled something about fire.

Fluffy barked violently.

Then Lilith finished cheerfully:

“We’ll be back before dinner!”

The raven vanished.

Gene stared blankly.

“…They WHAT?”

Then alarms screamed across his HUD.

A warp signature.

Inside the hotel.

Moving fast.

“Oh no.”

Gene launched himself toward the library tower instantly.

⸻

Too Late

He crashed through multiple hallways without slowing down.

Walls exploded apart behind him.

The hotel trembled from the impact of his movements.

Gene burst into the ruined library.

Smoke still lingered heavily inside.

Books burned.

Furniture lay shattered.

And in the center of the room…

A massive purple warp gate spun violently.

Cultists surrounded it defensively.

Lilith stood inside the gateway beside Lyra, Selene, a badly wounded again Cassian, Aurelia, and Moira.

Fluffy snarled viciously at the cultists nearby.

Gene lunged forward immediately.

“WAIT—”

A cultist activated the portal fully.

The gateway collapsed inward.

Gene saw Lilith wave happily just before disappearing.

Then the portal shut.

Silence.

The remaining cultists immediately tried killing themselves before they could be captured.

The Mad couple managed to stop two.

Mother Sarah caught another.

But the rest died instantly through magical suicide seals.

Gene stood motionless in the ruined library.

The chaos armor shifted restlessly around him.

Rain poured through the shattered ceiling overhead.

Then slowly…

Very slowly…

Gene laughed.

Not a happy laugh.

Not even an angry laugh.

More of a dangerous one.

Because for the first time since arriving in this world…

Someone had taken something that was his.

The hotel of nightmares had just been given a target.
