Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 48: The Prince and the Shadowsc

  • Next Chapter

Prince Cassian hated losing.

He hated it in the way only someone raised from birth to excel at everything could hate it.

Every sword lesson.

Every political debate.

Every summoner duel.

Every expectation placed upon House Solmont had carved competition into his bones.

Which was why Gene Gingerline irritated him so profoundly.

Not because Gene was arrogant.

Quite the opposite.

The man somehow stumbled into greatness while looking perpetually confused.

And yet somehow—

Gene kept winning.

Cassian stood in the royal archives beneath the royal 6th tower with a candle lantern in one hand and an old summoning treatise in the other.

The archives stretched endlessly underground.

Massive stone shelves towered overhead.

Dust coated ancient texts untouched for centuries.

Cassian adjusted his glasses and frowned at the page before him.

“How,” he muttered, “how does one even weaponize a hotel?”

Originally, his research had begun as a matter of pride.

He wanted to understand Gene’s summons better.

Wanted to discover weaknesses.

Ways to counter fear-based combat.

But the deeper he researched the old summoning records, the stranger the patterns became.

Entire sections of history were missing.

References vanished abruptly.

Ancient worlds completely erased from official records.

And always….

Always…

The same symbols appeared hidden in corners of texts.

A crescent moon.

An eye.

A mountain.

And a black doorway surrounded by claws.

Cassian turned another brittle page.

Then froze.

Someone had added a loose sheet of paper into the margins.

Added this very recently in fact.

The parchment was much newer than the book itself.

Messily folded.

Almost hidden.

His pulse quickened.

Cassian carefully unfolded it. It was a betting receipt for a match at the arena.

On the back was handwriting. It seemed hurried, it was written uneven and ink smeared at times yet, it was still legible.

The Sleeper stirs beneath the veil.

The Dreamseer line has awakened once more.

The new summoner of horror may be the key we have been looking for.

When dreams and nightmares merge,

the gate shall open.

Glory to the Hollow King.

Cassian’s stomach dropped.

The Hollow King.

An old myth.

A forbidden deity whispered about only in obscure occult texts.

Most scholars dismissed it as nonsense.

A nightmare god supposedly sealed away before modern summoning civilization existed.

Cassian stared at the note.

Then slowly looked around the archive.

The underground chamber suddenly felt colder.

Too quiet.

He quickly copied the note.

He carefully slipped the copied paper into his coat as he put the note back in the book.

As he slid the book back,  that was when he noticed he was no longer alone.

At the far end of the aisle stood a man in archivist robes.

Watching him.

The figure smiled faintly.

Cassian’s hand immediately moved toward the sword at his hip.

The archivist face suddenly darkened and blurred .

Then it turned and walked away.

Not hurried.

Not afraid.

As though being seen had been intentional.

This was a warning.

Cassian’s pulse hammered in his ears.

⸻

Vanished Evidence

The next morning, Cassian returned to the archives with three royal guards and a direct order from the crown permitting investigation access.

The loose note was gone.

The book itself had vanished.

Cassian stared at the empty shelf.

“No…”

The head archivist wrung his hands nervously.

“I swear it was here yesterday, Your Highness.”

Cassian’s jaw tightened.

“Who had access?”

“No one should have been in here after hours my lord.”

That answer told Cassian everything.

Someone inside the palace was involved.

He searched for hours.

Nothing remained.

No note.

No records.

No trace the book had ever existed.

Then he remembered…

He had the single folded paper hidden inside of his coat.

The only proof left.

He knew that it was a very dangerous thing to possess.

⸻

Shadows in the Streets

By evening, Cassian had noticed them following him.

Never close enough to confront.

Yet, Always present.

A man reading a newspaper too long.

A woman standing motionless near alleyways.

A hooded figure reflected in shop windows.

Watching.

Waiting.

Cassian kept one hand near his sword as he moved through the city toward the Seventh Tower.

Rain drizzled lightly overhead.

The streets glowed silver beneath lanternlight.

Every instinct screamed that something had gone terribly wrong.

⸻

Cousins and Warnings

Moira opened the office door before Cassian could knock.

Moira Valecourt frowned immediately.

“You look terrible.”

“Thank you.”

“You’re welcome.”

Cassian stepped inside quickly.

Gene and Selene Mooncrest were already there.

Gene raised an eyebrow.

“You look like you fought a ghost.”

Cassian closed the door behind him.

“I may have found people trying to awaken one.”

That immediately killed the humor in the room.

Moira’s expression sharpened.

“What happened?”

Cassian explained everything.

The hidden note.

The Hollow King.

The missing records.

The followers.

As he spoke, Gene’s face grew steadily darker.

Selene touched her glowing necklace uneasily.

Moira paced.

“That symbol…” she whispered. “I’ve seen references to it before.”

Cassian nodded grimly.

“So have I.”

Gene crossed his arms.

“And this… this cult thinks I’m connected to awakening their god?”

Cassian looked directly at him.

“The note specifically mentioned the summoner of horror.”

Silence settled heavily over the office.

Gene finally sighed.

“Fantastic.”

Selene took his hand.

“You better not awaken an evil god.”

Gene looked at her.

“I’m not! I don’t even like the idea of one.”

Cassian wasn’t entirely sure.

Not because he distrusted Gene.

But because prophecies rarely cared about intentions.

⸻

The Watching Eyes

Mid-conversation, Cassian felt it again.

That prickling sensation.

Being watched.

His eyes shifted toward the office window.

For a brief moment, he saw movement atop a distant rooftop.

A dark silhouette.

Then it vanished.

Cassian immediately stood.

“I shouldn’t stay.”

Moira frowned.

“You just got here.”

“They know that I found out something.”

Gene stepped forward.

“Then stay at the hotel.”

Cassian hesitated.

Part of him wanted to accept.

But another part refused to sit and hide.

“I need more answers first.”

Selene looked worried.

“Cassian…”

“I’ll be careful.”

Gene snorted softly.

“That sentence usually guarantees the opposite.”

A faint smile tugged at Cassian’s mouth.

“Such a Jokester! If need to I’ll go to the hotel.”

Then he left.

⸻

The attack came halfway from his home.

Cassian had deliberately avoided the main streets, taking narrower roads lined with old stone buildings.

Rain fell harder now.

Thunder rumbled overhead.

The alley behind him suddenly darkened unnaturally.

Then figures emerged.

Six of them.

All hooded.

All armed.

One carried a curved dagger etched with glowing symbols.

Another held chains wrapped in black cloth.

Cassian sighed tiredly.

“You cultists really need better hobbies.”

The nearest attacker lunged.

Cassian drew his sword instantly.

Steel flashed.

The attacker collapsed.

The alley exploded into violence.

Cassian summoned two of his royal knights mid-combat.

Golden summoning circles erupted around him.

Towering armored cavalry appeared in bursts of light.

The knights charged immediately.

The cultists fought without fear.

That unsettled Cassian more than their numbers.

One man kept advancing even after losing an arm.

Another laughed while impaled.

Dark magic twisted through the alley like living smoke.

Cassian cut through two more attackers.

One of his summoned knights trampled a cultist into the stone wall hard enough to crater it.

Finally, the last surviving cultist retreated into the darkness.

Gone within seconds.

Cassian stood breathing heavily in the rain.

His knights dissolved into light.

Something cold settled in his stomach.

These weren’t normal assassins.

They may have been summoners.

⸻

The Pact

His parents received him immediately upon returning to the palace.

King Aurelius Solmont stood near the fireplace in his private study while Queen Seraphine sat silently nearby.

Both looked exhausted.

Cassian wasted no time.

“There’s a cult tied to someone known as the Hollow King.”

His mother closed her eyes.

His father looked away.

Cassian’s heartbeat quickened.

“Mother… Father…. You know something?”

King Aurelius spoke quietly.

“Our family has known for generations.”

Cassian stared at him in disbelief as a pain scratched in his heart.

“Then why hasn’t anyone done anything about it?”

“Because we are forbidden.”

Cassian frowned.

“What?”

The king slowly turned toward him.

“There is an old pact between the royal bloodlines and the guardians of the veil.”

Queen Seraphine’s voice trembled.

“We are not permitted to directly interfere.”

Cassian felt anger rising.

“But there are people trying to awaken a nightmare god!”

“And if the pact breaks,” his father snapped, “the seals weaken further.”

Silence crashed down afterward.

Cassian had never heard fear in his father’s voice before.

Not real fear.

The king exhaled shakily.

“We can tell you no more.”

Cassian clenched his fists.

“Then why-?”

His father stepped forward quietly.

And pressed a small iron key into Cassian’s palm.

“There is only one thing we can do to help.”

He handed over a folded note.

“Your grandfather hid this long ago.”

Cassian unfolded the paper.

An address.

Coordinates beneath the old eastern district.

And one sentence:

When the mountain wakes, seek the buried heart.

⸻

The Hidden Lockbox

The location led Cassian beneath an abandoned chapel outside the city.

Dust choked the underground crypt.

Ancient statues lined the ruined walls.

After nearly an hour of searching, and several run ins with spiders, he finally discovered a hidden compartment beneath a smashed altar.

Inside rested a black lockbox.

The iron key fit it perfectly.

When the box opened, cold air rushed outward.

Inside lay:

• A crimson gemstone pulsing like a heartbeat.

• A folded parchment.

Cassian carefully opened the note.

Only a single riddle was written inside.

The dreamer sleeps beneath the storm.

The watcher guards the silent door.

Only fears given form

binds the hunger forevermore

Cassian stared at the words.

Fear given form.

Gene.

It had to mean Gene.

The gemstone pulsed faster as he held it.

As though reacting to the thought.

⸻

Toward the Hotel

Rain poured heavily by the time Cassian reached the outer roads leading toward Mystic Blood Valley.

He no longer cared about secrecy.

The gemstone in his pocket pulsed constantly now.

Like it knew where he was going.

Like it wanted to reach the hotel.

The forest path darkened unnaturally.

Then the cult attacked again.

This time there were more of them.

Far more.

Shadows exploded out from the trees.

Blades flashed.

Dark magic screamed through the storm.

Cassian summoned every knight he could.

Golden cavalry clashed against black-robed fanatics.

The forest erupted into chaos.

Cassian cut one attacker down.

Then another.

But exhaustion was catching up to him.

A chain wrapped around his arm.

A dagger slashed across his side.

One cultist whispered gleefully:

“The Hollow King rises soon.”

Cassian drove his sword through the man’s chest.

Then pain exploded across his back.

He stumbled.

Blood soaked his coat.

More shadows closed in.

Too many.

Cassian realized with terrifying clarity…

He might actually die here.

A cultist raised a black blade up, his aim to finally finish off the nosey prince.

He suddenly froze.

The man’s expression shifted from triumph..

To horror.

⸻

Help Arrives

A massive hand had  burst out from the darkness and roughly grabbed the back of the cultist’s neck.

The hand lifted the cultist into the air.

The hand squeezed crushing the cultist neck with a snap.

The body dropped lifelessly to the ground.

A massive metal boot crushed the cultist head with a sickening crunch.

The forest had fallen abnormally silent.

From out of the darkness, stepped The Caretaker.

His new black titanium mask gleamed beneath flashes of lightning.

Beside him walked Jesse Belle carrying her massive wood axe across one shoulder.

“Well …well…. well,” Jesse Belle drawled softly.

“Good thing we were in the neighborhood.”

The remaining cultists panicked immediately.

One screamed, “Monster!”

The Caretaker tilted his head slowly.

Then he charged forward.

What followed barely resembled a fight.

The Caretaker tore through cultists like a force of nature.

Bones snapped.

Trees shattered.

Screams echoed through the rain storm.

Jesse Belle spun her axe with terrifying grace killing two cult members that tried to rush up to kill Cassian.

“Y’all definitely picked the wrong woods tonight sugar.”

Within moments, the rest of the surviving cultists fled into the darkness.

Cassian collapsed against a tree, barely conscious.

The Caretaker knelt beside him silently.

Cassian coughed blood weakly.

“Gene…”

His trembling hand pulled a bloodstained folded note from his coat.

He shoved it toward the Caretaker.

“Give… this… to Gene…”

The Caretaker carefully accepted it.

 Cassian vision blurred.

Jesse Belle crouched beside him.

“Well sugar, don’t you go dyin on us now.”

Cassian tried to speak again.

Instead, darkness swallowed him whole.

⸻

To the Laboratory

Rain hammered the forest as the Caretaker lifted the unconscious prince effortlessly over one shoulder.

Jesse Belle glanced at the bloodied note.

“Think Gene’s gonna like this?”

The Caretaker stared silently toward the distant lights of the Nightmare Grand Hotel.

Far away, the storm-covered mountain flashed with distant lightning.

And somewhere beneath the world….

Something ancient stirred.
