Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 38: The Case of the Missing Mimic

  • Next Chapter

Gene Gingerline had just sat down to enjoy what he hoped would be a quiet breakfast when Lilith burst into the dining room like a silver-haired hurricane.

Her tiny crown was crooked.

Her slippers were mismatched.

And her eyes were wide with genuine panic.

“Chomper is gone!”

The entire room froze.

Gene lowered his coffee cup.

Selene looked up from her toast.

Mother Sarah paused with her teacup halfway to her lips.

Victor nearly dropped a plate of scrambled eggs.

Morrigan blinked.

Jesse Belle set down her fork.

The Caretaker slowly turned his masked face toward Lilith.

The silence that followed was so complete that Gene could hear the crackle of the fireplace.

Lilith’s lower lip trembled.

“I went to the lobby to feed him his morning cookie, and he wasn’t there.”

She held up a chocolate chip cookie as evidence.

Gene stood immediately.

“All right.”

He crouched until he was eye level with her.

“When was the last time you saw him?”

“Last night before bed.”

“Did he seem upset?”

Lilith shook her head.

“He was happy because I gave him a cinnamon roll.”

Jesse Belle smiled softly.

“Sugar, most folks would be happy after a cinnamon roll.”

Lilith sniffled.

“Did he run away?”

Gene pulled her into a hug.

“I don’t know yet.”

He stood and looked around the room.

“Well, everyone.”

He spread his hands dramatically.

“We have a missing mimic.”

Victor’s eyes lit up.

“A mystery.”

Morrigan clasped her hands.

“How exciting.”

Mother Sarah sighed.

“Concerning, but exciting.”

Captain Stringer, who had entered just in time to hear the announcement, adjusted his hat.

“Investigation… initiated.”

Lilith wiped her eyes.

“We have to find him.”

Gene smiled.

“We will.”

The Caretaker placed one massive hand gently on Lilith’s shoulder.

Jesse Belle twirled her axe and grinned.

“Well then, gang.”

She tipped her hat.

“Let’s go solve ourselves a monster mystery.”

⸻

The Crime Scene

The lobby had become Chomper’s preferred station.

By day he disguised himself as a handsome antique chest near the front desk.

By night he remained there on guard, dreaming whatever carnivorous treasure chests dreamed about.

Now his spot was empty.

Gene folded his arms.

“That’s… unsettling.”

Lilith knelt beside the polished floor.

“My cookie is still here.”

Indeed, a single chocolate chip cookie sat untouched on the floor.

That alone convinced Gene that something unusual had happened.

A mimic never ignored free food.

Captain Stringer surveyed the area.

“Search… for… evidence.”

The puppet officers dispersed.

Pru examined the floor.

Finn climbed the chandelier for a better view.

Brick moved furniture.

Daisy comforted Lilith.

The Caretaker crouched beside the cookie.

He picked it up and examined it.

Then he pointed toward the wall behind the front desk.

Gene approached.

At first, he saw nothing.

Then he noticed a small smear of blood.

Fresh.

Selene frowned.

“That doesn’t look like Chomper’s.”

Gene followed the mark downward.

A section of decorative paneling hung slightly ajar.

Jesse Belle gave it a tug.

The panel swung open.

Behind it yawned a jagged hole in the wall.

Splintered wood littered the floor.

Beyond, a dark tunnel led toward the rear grounds.

Lilith gasped.

“Someone took him!”

Mother Sarah knelt to examine the edges.

“These boards were broken from both sides.”

Victor adjusted his glasses.

“A struggle.”

Morrigan touched a bloodstain.

“Human blood.”

Gene’s expression darkened.

“Oh, I have a pretty good idea who this might be.”

Selene crossed her arms.

“The burglar.”

The same foolish thief who had once attempted to rob the hotel and had nearly become monster food.

Apparently, losing his dignity had not been educational enough.

Captain Stringer tipped his hat.

“Suspect… identified.”

Gene straightened.

“Let’s follow the trail.”

⸻

The Bloody Path

The trail led through the hidden passage and out into the rear courtyard.

Drops of blood marked the ground in a wavering line.

The pattern suggested someone running while injured and deeply regretting every life decision that had brought them to this point.

The trail continued across the academy grounds.

Several students walking to morning classes noticed the procession of monsters and adults and hurried out of the way.

Lilith marched at the front holding her stuffed rabbit under one arm like a detective’s badge.

“I’m going to tell Chomper he scared me.”

Jesse Belle smiled.

“And then hug him?”

Lilith considered.

“Yes.”

They passed the school gardens.

Beyond them stood the academy’s newly built barn.

Originally intended for livestock, feed storage, and agricultural lessons, the large wooden structure sat a short distance behind the school.

The blood trail led directly to the half-open doors.

Gene stopped.

The air smelled of hay.

And fear.

Very strong fear.

From inside came a desperate, wavering voice.

“Please! Stay back!”

Then came a low, hungry chirping sound.

Lilith gasped.

“Chomper!”

⸻

The Barn

Gene pushed open the doors.

Sunbeams pierced through cracks in the walls, illuminating floating dust and towering stacks of hay.

The scene inside looked like something from a darkly comedic painting.

The burglar stood on a narrow platform at the top of a tall ladder.

His clothes were torn.

His face was pale.

One hand clutched the ladder so tightly his knuckles were white.

The other ended in a blood-soaked bandage where his left hand should have been.

Below him, Chomper sat at the base of the ladder.

The mimic’s lid opened and closed slowly.

Every few seconds, he licked his teeth and made an expectant clicking noise.

The burglar screamed when he saw Gene.

“Get it away from me!”

Chomper turned.

His eyes brightened.

He chirped happily and bounded across the floor toward Lilith.

Lilith threw her arms around the chest.

“You’re okay!”

Chomper purred.

Gene stared up at the burglar.

“Well.”

He folded his arms.

“Looks like you found him.”

The man’s face contorted with rage and fear.

“He ate my hand!”

Jesse Belle tilted her head.

“Well, sugar, why’d you try to steal a man’s treasure chest?”

The burglar sputtered.

“I thought I could sell it!”

Victor peered at the wound.

“Technically, he only ate approximately sixty percent of the hand.”

Morrigan patted his shoulder.

“Not the time, dear.”

The burglar looked near tears.

“That thing chased me all night!”

Gene glanced at Chomper.

The mimic made an innocent gurgling sound.

Lilith hugged him tighter.

“He was protecting the hotel.”

Mother Sarah stepped forward, her expression stern enough to make the injured thief shrink back.

“You were warned.”

⸻

The Burglar’s Story

Under questioning, the burglar confessed.

He had returned to the hotel under cover of darkness, convinced that the school and hotel contained priceless magical items.

He had entered through a maintenance passage he thought had gone unnoticed.

Unfortunately for him, Chomper had noticed.

The mimic had silently followed him.

When the burglar attempted to pry open a locked cabinet, Chomper dropped his disguise and lunged.

The man fled through the walls and across the grounds.

Chomper pursued him relentlessly.

Whenever the burglar stopped to catch his breath, the mimic tried to bite him again.

He eventually climbed the barn ladder in desperation.

Chomper stationed himself below and waited.

Patiently.

For hours.

Gene pinched the bridge of his nose.

“So you broke into my home… again… stole from me… and then spent the night trapped on a ladder by a carnivorous treasure chest.”

The burglar glared.

“This is your fault!”

Selene laughed so hard she had to lean against Gene.

⸻

Chomper’s Reward

Lilith turned to Gene.

“Chomper was a good boy.”

Gene smiled.

“The best.”

The mimic bounced happily.

Gene crouched in front of him.

“Chomper, you protected the school.”

The mimic chirped proudly.

“You are officially promoted.”

A system notification appeared.

⸻

CHOMPER PROMOTED

Title Earned: Academy Guardian

Bonuses:

• Increased durability

• Enhanced camouflage

• Improved tracking ability

⸻

Chomper glowed briefly.

His brass trim became more ornate.

A small silver crest appeared on his lid: the hotel’s coat of arms.

Lilith squealed.

“He got a badge!”

Chomper preened.

⸻

Escort Duty

Gene turned to Hank and two academy security guards who had arrived midway through the investigation.

The guards looked equal parts impressed and disturbed.

Gene gestured toward the burglar.

“Please escort this man to the market constables.”

Hank nodded.

“Happy to.”

The burglar paled.

“Wait, can’t we discuss this?”

Mother Sarah smiled politely.

“No.”

Jesse Belle folded her arms.

“Try not to steal living furniture next time, honey.”

The burglar was carefully helped down the ladder.

The moment his feet touched the ground, Chomper opened his lid.

The man shrieked and jumped backward.

Lilith patted the mimic.

“No more eating.”

Chomper reluctantly closed his mouth.

The guards led the whimpering thief away.

His final words drifted from the barn.

“It watched me sleep!”

Finn Rook, hanging upside down from a rafter, called after him.

“That’s what guardians do!”

⸻

Hero of the Academy

News spread quickly.

By lunchtime, the students were whispering excitedly.

“Chomper caught a thief.”

“He ate his hand.”

“He guards the school.”

Several children approached the mimic in the lobby to present him with hand-drawn thank-you cards.

Chomper accepted each one proudly.

One drawing depicted him wearing a knight’s helmet.

Another showed him breathing fire.

Lilith arranged the cards around his favorite corner.

“Now everyone knows you’re a hero.”

Chomper made a pleased rumble.

⸻

The Reward from Town

That evening, a messenger from Grimhollow arrived.

The market constable had heard the story.

As thanks for capturing a known repeat offender, the town sent:

• A crate of smoked meats.

• Two wheels of cheese.

• A polished brass nameplate.

The engraved plate read:

CHOMPER

ACADEMY GUARDIAN

PLEASE DO NOT FEED WITHOUT PERMISSION

Gene laughed until tears formed in his eyes.

He installed the plaque beside Chomper’s station personally.

Lilith saluted.

“You earned it.”

⸻

Quiet Satisfaction

That night, Gene stood in the academy foyer with Selene.

Chomper rested beneath his new plaque, surrounded by children’s drawings and crumbs from celebratory cookies.

The mimic looked deeply content.

Selene slipped her hand into Gene’s.

“Not bad for a mystery box prize.”

Gene smiled.

“Not bad at all.”

The mimic opened one eye.

Then settled back into place.

Outside, the academy stood silent beneath the violet twilight.

Safe.

Protected.

And watched over by a treasure chest with an appetite for burglars.

Gene shook his head, smiling.

Only in his life could a missing mimic turn into a heroic tale for schoolchildren.

And somehow, that felt exactly right.
