Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 36: Love and War
The challenge arrived on a silver scroll sealed with the blazing sun crest of House Solmont.
Gene was in the hotel’s grand lounge, helping Lilith and several NPC children build what was supposed to be a model village and had somehow become a sprawling cardboard kingdom defended by stuffed animals and a surprisingly aggressive Chomper.
The mimic, disguised as a toy chest, had already “eaten” three wooden soldiers and was making suspicious chewing noises.
A raven tapped at the stained-glass window.
Mother Sarah opened it with a gesture, and the bird hopped inside carrying a scroll tied to one leg.
The ghostly nun handed it to Gene.
He broke the seal and read the contents.
Then he smiled.
Selene, seated beside him, noticed immediately.
“That expression usually means either excellent news or imminent violence.”
Gene held up the letter.
“Why not both?”
Lilith scrambled onto his lap.
“Are we fighting someone again?”
Gene skimmed the formal challenge.
Prince Cassian Aurelius of House Solmont—Selene’s former would-be suitor and one of the more insufferably polished nobles Gene had ever met—requested a rematch.
This time, the rules specified:
• Two summons per side.
• Open battlefield.
• Victory by incapacitation or surrender.
• Noble spectators permitted.
Gene handed the scroll to Selene.
She read it and rolled her eyes.
“He’s still trying to prove he’s superior.”
Jesse Belle, lounging against the Caretaker with one boot propped on a chair, grinned.
“Well, bless his shiny little heart.”
The Caretaker slowly turned his masked face toward the letter.
Gene glanced at the towering slasher, then at Jesse Belle.
An idea formed.
He smiled.
“I think I know who should represent us.”
Jesse Belle straightened.
“You and me, darlin’?”
The Caretaker tilted his head.
Gene nodded.
“The two of you.”
Jesse Belle clapped her hands.
“Oh, this is gonna be romantic.”
Lilith squealed.
“Mister Caretaker and Miss Jesse are going on a battle date!”
The Caretaker placed one gloved hand over his mask.
Selene laughed.
“That may be the most accurate description possible.”
⸻
Preparing the Pair
Training began immediately.
The hotel’s training grounds echoed with the ring of steel and the thud of Jesse Belle’s axe.
Jesse Belle and the Caretaker already complemented each other naturally.
He was a relentless wall of silent brutality.
She was speed, warmth, and explosive ferocity.
Captain Stringer orchestrated drills with military precision.
“Synchronization… excellent.”
Pru tracked timing.
Brick served as a durable sparring partner.
Finn introduced unexpected traps that Jesse Belle cheerfully smashed.
Daisy distributed towels and lemonade.
Lilith sat on a throne-like stack of cushions, shouting encouragement.
“Hit harder!”
Mother Sarah coughed delicately.
Jesse Belle wiped sweat from her brow and leaned against the Caretaker.
“You think that fancy pants prince is ready for us, sugar?”
The Caretaker tilted his head.
Jesse Belle smiled.
“Exactly what I thought.”
⸻
The Prince’s Selection
The arena buzzed with anticipation.
Word had spread quickly that Gene’s next battle would feature the terrifying masked slasher and his newly summoned horned bride.
The betting stalls were packed.
Gene, of course, quietly placed another wager on himself.
The odds were less dramatic than before but still favorable.
Selene placed her own bet with an expression of serene confidence.
When Prince Cassian entered, the crowd erupted.
He rode a gleaming white stallion and wore ornate gold armor polished to a mirror shine.
His blond hair seemed artfully arranged despite the helmet tucked beneath one arm.
He bowed to the spectators, then to Selene.
“My lady.”
Selene gave a polite nod.
Gene resisted the urge to wave a certain finger back at him.
Cassian dismounted and raised a hand.
Two summons materialized.
The first were the Solar Horse Knights—two elite cavalry champions mounted on armored warhorses.
The second was the Sun Legion, a disciplined company of heavily armored infantry carrying spears and tower shields emblazoned with the Solmont crest.
Gene’s eyebrows rose.
“That’s… a lot.”
The arena official clarified.
“The legion counts as one composite summon.”
Gene exhaled.
“Okay. Fair enough.”
Jesse Belle twirled her axe.
“Honey, I grew up splitting wood and wrangling troublemakers. We’ll be just fine.”
The Caretaker rested a hand on her shoulder.
⸻
Entering the Battlefield
The battlefield was a broad grassy plain with scattered ruins and low stone walls.
The Caretaker stood motionless, knife resting at his side.
Jesse Belle leaned on her axe, smiling as if attending a county fair.
Across from them, Cassian’s forces assembled with military precision.
Trumpets sounded.
The match began.
⸻
Opening Moves
The Sun Legion advanced in disciplined formation.
Shields locked.
Spears angled forward.
The Horse Knights split left and right, preparing to flank.
Jesse Belle spun her axe.
“Well, ain’t they organized?”
The Caretaker started walking.
He did not run.
He never needed to.
The infantry line struck first.
Spears jabbed.
The Caretaker absorbed the blows, snapping shafts and dragging soldiers from formation.
Jesse Belle became a blur.
She darted through gaps, smashing shields and sweeping knights off their feet.
Her laughter rang across the field.
“Slow pokes! Yall need to keep up!”
The crowd roared in excitement.
⸻
Jesse Belle Surrounded
Cassian quickly adapted.
The Horse Knights coordinated with the legion, driving Jesse Belle away from the Caretaker.
A cavalry charge forced her toward a ruined wall.
Infantry closed from all sides.
For the first time, Jesse Belle was isolated.
She fought ferociously.
Her axe split armor.
Her horns glinted through blood beneath the arena lights.
She was like a force of nature, but the numbers were overwhelming.
A lance struck her side.
A spear caught her shoulder.
Shields hemmed her in.
Gene gripped the railing.
Selene placed a hand on his arm.
“She can handle it don’t worry.”
Then Jesse Belle cried out as a horse knight slammed into her, forcing her down to one knee.
The sound echoed across the battlefield.
The Caretaker stopped moving and turned.
Everything grew still.
⸻
The Natural Berserker Awakens
The atmosphere changed.
The Caretaker turned slowly toward Jesse Belle.
The legion between them suddenly looked very small.
The masked giant lowered his body.
Then he moved.
He tore through the infantry like a storm.
Soldiers flew away in every direction.
A horse knight made the mistake of trying to charge him.
The Caretaker seized both the rider and mount.
With impossible strength, he lifted and threw the still mounted knight , over his head.
The crowd gasped.
Gene stared in disbelief.
“Did he just pick up a horse?”
Selene’s eyes were wide.
The Caretaker hurled the horse like a cannon ball into the crowd behind him.
It smashed through the clustered soldiers as he rushed through the others surrounding Jesse Belle.
A swing of his arms sent men and bent armor tumbling across the field.
Half of her encirclement disappeared in a thunderous crash.
The Caretaker arrived a heartbeat later.
What followed was more than carnage than an actual battle.
He tore weapons away, turning them against their own welders.
He grabbed limbs sliced off summoned constructs , which should be impossible due to summons usually dissolving into intangible fragments, and used them as improvised blunt weapons.
Shields shattered.
Armor crumpled.
The Sun Legion collapsed in utter terror.
For the first time, genuine fear rippled through the opposing force.
The Caretaker was no longer merely a horror icon.
He was wrath given form.
And all of it was focused on the people who had dared hurt Jesse Belle.
⸻
United Again
Jesse Belle rose slowly, brushing dust from her clothes.
She looked around at all the devastation.
Then at the Caretaker.
Her expression melted into pure adoration.
“Oh, sugar…”
She stepped forward, cupped the side of his mask, and kissed his cheek.
“Thank you for rescuing little ol’ me.”
The Caretaker went utterly still.
Then he placed one hand gently on her waist.
The arena exploded with cheers.
Lilith bounced in her seat.
“He saved his wife!”
Mother Sarah dabbed at her eye.
“That was unexpectedly touching.”
Morrigan leaned sideways and nudged Victor.
“Reminds me of a certain someone.”
Victor smiled.
“Hey we romantic types love hard.”
⸻
The Final Push
Cassian’s remaining Horse Knight launched one desperate charge.
Jesse Belle met him head-on.
With a powerful swing, she split the knight from saddle to helm.
The construct dissolved into light.
Only the prince’s command avatar remained.
He looked over the ruined field and bowed.
“I concede.”
Trumpets sounded.
⸻
Victory Celebration
The crowd erupted.
Gene and Selene hurried to the field.
Lilith ran ahead, with Fluffy bounding beside her.
Lilith threw herself at Jesse Belle.
“You both were so amazing!”
Jesse Belle lifted her effortlessly.
“Thank you, sweetheart.”
Lilith turned to the Caretaker.
“And you were totally scary.”
The Caretaker tilted his head.
Lilith shook her head.
“Don’t worry! You were scary in a good way.”
Cassian approached Gene.
Though clearly disappointed, the prince carried himself with dignity.
“Your summons fought with remarkable devotion.”
Gene smiled.
“Thanks.”
Cassian inclined his head to Jesse Belle and the Caretaker.
“Both of them are definitely a formidable pair.”
Jesse Belle tipped an imaginary hat.
“Much obliged.”
⸻
The Gift
Three days later, a carriage from House Solmont arrived.
Servants delivered a large wrapped package and a handwritten note.
Gene gathered the family in the lounge.
He opened the package.
Inside was a magnificent shield.
Its surface was forged from silver and gold.
At its center was a newly crafted coat of arms.
A black gothic hotel rose against a silver moon.
Ravens circled above.
A masked figure stood at one side.
A horned woman carrying an axe stood at the other.
At the base sat a small crowned girl.
Gene’s throat tightened sentimentally.
“Its…. It’s us.”
Selene read the note aloud.
Lord Gingerline,
Though we were defeated in the battle, true strength always deserves recognition.
May this crest honor the family you have built.
—Prince Cassian Aurelius of House Solmont
Lilith pointed excitedly at the emblem.
“That’s me!”
Jesse Belle pressed a hand to her heart.
“Well, ain’t that beautiful.”
The Caretaker rested a hand on Gene’s shoulder.
Gene ran his fingers over the shield.
This was more than a gift.
It was acknowledgment of his skill.
His strange little horror kingdom was being taken seriously.
He hung the shield above the grand fireplace in the lounge.
The silver and gold gleamed in the violet light.
⸻
Celebration in the Hotel
That evening, the Nightmare Grand Hotel hosted a celebration.
NPCs and summons filled the ballroom.
Music echoed.
Tables overflowed with food.
Lilith danced with Daisy and Finn.
Victor and Morrigan swayed together.
Mother Sarah supervised the children.
Hank proudly explained the new coat of arms to anyone who would listen.
Gene stood with Selene, admiring the shield.
Jesse Belle leaned against the Caretaker nearby.
She traced the outline of his mask.
“You know, sugar, you looked mighty handsome out there.”
The Caretaker placed his arm around her.
Jesse Belle smiled up at him.
“And mighty terrifying.”
The Caretaker tilted his head.
She laughed.
“Exactly.”
Gene raised a glass.
“To family.”
Everyone echoed the toast.
The Nightmare Grand Hotel rang with laughter, music, and the voices of monsters who had become something far greater than what they were designed to be.
They were home.
And above them all, the new crest gleamed proudly—a symbol of a haunted hotel, a growing kingdom, and the family at its heart.
