Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 34: Strings of Command
Gene Gingerline had learned that there were two kinds of rewards.
The first kind was immediately useful.
Extra points. Upgrade materials. New buildings.
The second kind looked deeply unsettling until you stared at them long enough to realize they were exactly what your haunted hotel needed.
The blueprint labeled The Possessed Marionette fell squarely into the second category.
⸻
The Blueprint in the Book
It was late evening.
Rain pattered softly against the stained-glass windows of Gene’s study.
Selene sat curled in an armchair nearby, reading one of the Moon Librarian’s recommended texts.
Gene sat behind his desk with the Nightmare Architect’s Manual open before him.
Most of the pages remained locked behind shimmering seals, but a newly illuminated section had appeared after the domain’s recent level increase.
At the top of the page, written in ornate silver lettering, was a title:
The Possessed Marionette
A full-page illustration spread across the parchment.
The figure depicted was a wooden marionette dressed in the uniform of a police captain from some bygone era.
Its body was carved from dark polished wood.
Its painted face bore stern features and a neatly trimmed mustache.
Thin strings of silver light extended from its wrists and fingers.
Behind it loomed the silhouettes of four smaller puppets.
The description read:
A command-oriented autonomous spirit construct.
Specializes in tactical control, subordinate generation, and remote operation of inanimate objects.
Ideal for security, training, and coordinated defense.
Gene leaned back.
“Huh.”
Selene looked up from her book.
“That sounded intrigued.”
Gene turned the manual toward her.
Selene studied the illustration.
The puppet’s painted eyes seemed to stare out of the page with unsettling intelligence.
She smiled.
“Oddly distinguished.”
Gene tapped the description.
“It can control inanimate objects.”
Selene raised an eyebrow.
“Victor and Morrigan are going to love this.”
Gene’s smile widened.
“So is the armory.”
⸻
The Need for a Warden
The new armory had been completed as part of the hotel’s security expansion.
Located in the fortified lower levels, it contained:
• Enchanted weapons.
• Defensive constructs.
• Spare armor.
• Experimental prototypes.
A significant number of inventions labeled Do Not Touch.
At present, management consisted of a filing system and Victor’s assurances that he knew where everything was.
This was not a sustainable strategy.
Gene imagined an intelligent commander overseeing the armory, organizing defenses, and activating dormant constructs during emergencies.
The more he thought about it, the more perfect the Possessed Marionette seemed.
A tactician.
A quartermaster.
A drill instructor.
A creepy puppet police captain.
Gene closed the book and stood.
“I think we’re summoning tonight.”
Selene marked her page.
“Should I be worried?”
Gene grinned.
“Almost certainly.”
⸻
Family Consultation
The summoning chamber filled quickly once word spread.
Lilith arrived first, carrying Chomper under one arm like a very toothy handbag.
Mother Sarah followed with several curious children.
Victor and Morrigan looked positively delighted.
Jesse Belle brought fresh cookies.
The Caretaker stood beside her with one hand resting protectively on her back.
Gene held up the manual.
“Tonight’s summon is called the Possessed Marionette.”
Lilith blinked.
“A haunted puppet?”
Gene nodded.
“A haunted puppet police captain.”
Lilith’s eyes lit up.
“Can it make my dolls move?.”
Victor adjusted his glasses.
“If it can animate inert constructs, the possibilities are extraordinary.”
Morrigan clasped her hands.
“We could triple response efficiency.”
Mother Sarah looked thoughtful.
“Another disciplined authority figure would be useful.”
Jesse Belle smiled.
“As long as he doesn’t mind me callin’ him Cap’n.”
The Caretaker tilted his head.
Gene laughed.
“Let’s go meet him.”
⸻
The Summoning
Gene entered the description into the summoning machine.
The Possessed Marionette is a sentient haunted puppet resembling an old-fashioned police captain.
He is disciplined, intelligent, and protective.
He can create and command four subordinate puppet officers.
He can possess and control inanimate objects, constructs, and mechanical devices.
He specializes in armory management, tactical coordination, and training.
He is loyal to Gene and devoted to protecting the Nightmare Grand Hotel.
The machine flared to life.
Silver strings of energy descended from above.
Wood creaked.
The summoning circle filled with blue-white light.
When it faded, a figure stood at attention.
⸻
Captain Marlowe Stringer
He was approximately four feet tall.
His body was crafted from polished mahogany.
He wore a navy-blue captain’s uniform with brass buttons and a peaked cap.
Painted eyes of deep emerald gleamed with quiet intelligence.
A neatly carved mustache adorned his stern wooden face.
Thin glowing strings drifted around his fingers like strands of moonlight.
He removed his cap and bowed.
When he spoke, his voice was rich and deliberate.
“Gooood… eeevening.”
He straightened.
“I… am… Captain… Marlowe… Stringer.”
Each word emerged with measured precision.
Lilith leaned toward Gene and whispered loudly.
“He talks like he’s thinking about every syllable.”
Captain Stringer turned to her.
“That… is… accurate… Your Majesty.”
Lilith gasped.
“He knows my title!”
Captain Stringer inclined his head.
“A good… officer… knows… the chain… of… command.”
Lilith grinned.
“I like him.”
⸻
The Puppet Squad
Captain Stringer raised one wooden hand.
Silver strings snapped outward.
Four smaller marionettes descended from shimmering portals and landed neatly beside him.
They were each about three feet tall and dressed in matching uniforms.
Two women.
Two men.
Each with distinct features.
Captain Stringer gestured to them one by one.
“My… officers.”
Gene crouched to get a better look.
The first female puppet had sharp painted features and spectacles.
The second had a warm expression and bright green eyes.
One male puppet looked broad-shouldered and stoic.
The other wore a perpetual crooked grin.
Lilith tugged on Gene’s sleeve.
“We have to name them.”
Gene smiled.
“Absolutely.”
After much discussion, the names were chosen.
Officer Prudence “Pru” Holloway
The bespectacled female puppet. Methodical and precise.
Officer Daisy Wren
Warm, cheerful, and excellent with children.
Sergeant Brick Tanner
Strong, dependable, and physically imposing.
Officer Finn Rook
Clever, mischievous, and quick.
Captain Stringer nodded approvingly.
“Excellent… selections.”
The four puppets saluted.
Lilith nearly vibrated with excitement.
⸻
Touring the Armory
Gene led the new arrivals to the lower armory.
Rows of weapons gleamed beneath enchanted lanterns.
Inactive armored constructs stood along the walls.
Storage cabinets lined the chamber.
Captain Stringer surveyed the room.
He placed his cap back on his head.
Then drew himself up.
“Potential… satisfactory.”
Victor whispered to Morrigan.
“I think he likes it.”
Captain Stringer turned.
“It… is… disorganized.”
Victor coughed.
“A fair assessment.”
Strings of silver light shot from the captain’s fingers.
Cabinets opened.
Weapons floated through the air.
Constructs shifted into orderly ranks.
The subordinate puppets sprang into action.
Pru cataloged inventory.
Daisy polished helmets while humming.
Brick moved massive crates effortlessly.
Finn perched atop a shelf and reorganized crossbows at dizzying speed.
Within minutes, the armory was transformed.
Gene stared.
“I think we just hired the world’s creepiest logistics manager.”
Selene smiled.
“He’s perfect.”
⸻
Testing His Abilities
Captain Stringer approached an unfinished mechanical knight Victor had been building.
He placed his wooden hand against the construct’s chest.
Silver strings spread across the armor.
The knight shuddered.
Then stepped forward and saluted.
Victor’s jaw dropped.
“Incredible.”
Captain Stringer turned to Gene.
“Dormant… assets… are… resources.”
He gestured.
The mechanical knight moved with fluid precision under his control.
Then the captain released it, and it returned to stillness.
Morrigan’s eyes gleamed.
“Our dear captain may be one of the most useful summons yet.”
Gene had to agree.
⸻
The Training Session
The next day, Captain Stringer oversaw his first combat drill.
Participants included:
• Lilith
• Mother Sarah
• Jesse Belle
• Chomper
Captain Stringer stood atop a crate like a diminutive general.
His puppet officers moved around the training yard, operating mechanical dummies and armored constructs.
“Commence.”
The exercises were unlike anything Gene had seen.
The captain adapted constantly.
Constructs attacked from unexpected angles.
Pru altered obstacle layouts.
Finn deployed trick traps.
Brick introduced heavily armored opponents.
Daisy offered encouraging praise to younger participants.
Lilith adored every second.
“This is amazing!”
Captain Stringer nodded.
“Preparedness… saves… lives.”
Mother Sarah smiled.
“A commendable philosophy.”
Even Jesse Belle, breathing hard after splitting a possessed suit of armor in two, laughed.
“Well, Cap’n, you sure know how to work folks.”
Captain Stringer tipped his hat.
“Thank… you… ma’am.”
⸻
Captain Stringer and Hank
When introduced to Hank the security guard, Captain Stringer gave him a formal salute.
“Hank… Dorsey… valued… personnel.”
Hank blinked.
“I’ve been promoted?”
Captain Stringer nodded.
“Essential… frontline… staff.”
Hank straightened with visible pride.
“Best boss I’ve ever had.”
The captain considered.
“Acceptable.”
⸻
The Domain Evolves
Several days after Captain Stringer’s arrival, the system chimed throughout the hotel.
⸻
DOMAIN LEVEL UP!
The Nightmare Grand Hotel has advanced to Level 8.
New Bonuses:
• Expanded Summon Capacity
• Increased Point Generation
• Improved NPC Intelligence
• Advanced Security Protocols
• Chance for Elite Horror Blueprints
⸻
The entire domain responded.
The sky deepened into richer shades of violet and silver.
The hotel grew subtly larger.
The armory expanded.
The academy gained additional classrooms.
The grounds extended farther into the mist.
Gene stood on the balcony with Selene as magical energy rippled through their world.
Selene smiled.
“We leveled up.”
Gene wrapped an arm around her.
“And all it took was adding a haunted puppet police captain.”
Selene laughed.
“Your life is ridiculous.”
Gene kissed her temple.
“I know.”
⸻
Family Portrait
That evening, Gene looked into the bustling armory.
Captain Stringer stood at a tactical table while his four puppet officers worked around him.
Pru filed reports.
Daisy chatted with children.
Brick carried equipment.
Finn balanced upside down from a shelf while polishing daggers.
Victor and Morrigan discussed construct upgrades.
Jesse Belle leaned against the Caretaker, smiling.
Lilith sat on Captain Stringer’s shoulder like a tiny queen reviewing her troops.
The puppet captain spoke in his slow, deliberate voice.
“Order… creates… safety.”
Gene smiled.
Another summon.
Another strange and wonderful addition to his growing world.
What had begun as a collection of monsters was becoming a true society.
A family.
And as Gene watched the haunted puppet captain tip his hat to Lilith while she proclaimed him “Sir String-a-lot,” he could not help but think that the future was looking brighter—and much creepier—than ever.
