Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 28: Lessons in Victory

  • Next Chapter

The week leading up to the Blackwell match was, in Gene Gingerline’s opinion, the closest a man could come to experiencing both military planning and elementary school field day at the same time.

The official match format had been announced three days after the challenge:

Capture the Flag

Each summoner would defend a magically warded banner positioned on opposite sides of the arena.

Victory conditions:

1. Steal the enemy banner and return it to your base.

2. Or incapacitate all opposing summons.

The second condition mattered, but the first was faster.

And because the Blackwell family had accepted Lilith’s challenge as a matter of wounded pride, Gene intended to let Lilith participate.

Not alone, of course.

Even Gene was not reckless enough to send his brand new daughter into an arena without support.

He couldn’t think of anything better than Mother Sarah.

How would Lilith lose under the watchful eye of a ghostly nun who treated child safety as her sacred duty?

Gene felt surprisingly confident.

⸻

The decision was officially announced after dinner.

The family sat around the grand dining table as candlelight flickered over polished silver and crystal glasses.

Gene rose and tapped his spoon against his glass.

“For the Blackwell match,” he said, “Lilith and Mother Sarah will represent us.”

The reaction was immediate.

Lilith shot to her feet.

Her chair tipped over.

She ignored it entirely.

“Really?”

Gene grinned.

“Really.”

Lilith shrieked with joy and launched herself across the table.

Several rolls went flying.

Gene caught her in a hug.

“Yes, Your Majesty. This is your match.”

Lilith wrapped her arms around his neck.

“I won’t let you down.”

Gene kissed her forehead.

“I know.”

Mother Sarah set down her teacup and inclined her head.

“I shall ensure Lady Lilith remains safe.”

The Caretaker stood at the edge of the room, utterly still.

Gene felt a brief pulse through their bond.

Pride.

And just a touch of protective concern.

Selene smiled.

“A perfect choice.”

Victor adjusted his glasses.

“An educational experience.”

Morrigan clasped her hands.

“Adorable and terrifying.”

Mother Sarah gave Lilith a measured look.

“This means additional training.”

Lilith drew herself up.

“I proudly accept the burden.”

Mother Sarah nodded.

“And fewer sweets.”

Lilith gasped.

“This is oppression.”

The table dissolved into laughter.

Training the Queen

Capture-the-flag strategy transformed the hotel into a war room.

Gene projected arena schematics in the summoning chamber.

Selene helped analyze likely Blackwell tactics.

Mother Sarah outlined defensive protocols.

Lilith sat atop a stack of cushions, taking notes with dramatic seriousness.

The Blackwell family specialized in aristocratic summons—elegant, powerful, and notoriously overconfident.

Adrian Blackwell’s primary summon was known as the White Stag Knight, a heavily armored fey guardian mounted on a luminous stag.

Fast.

Disciplined.

Designed for honorable combat.

Gene planned to weaponize that expectation.

Lilith would defend the flag while Mother Sarah controlled the battlefield.

When an opening appeared, Lilith would send her favorite pet.

“Fluffy.”

The massive three-headed dire wolf bounded into the room at the sound of his name.

All three heads barked enthusiastically.

Lilith hugged the center neck.

“I love you so much Fluffy.”

Gene eyed the creature.

The monster stood as tall as a horse and possessed retractable steel claws.

It could enlarge and shrink its body at will, and possess enough teeth to cause a normal person nightmares.

“Appropriately named.”

Lilith looked offended.

“He is very gentle.”

One of the heads looked over at me , its tongue hanging halfway out of its mouth.

It borked and derpily started wagging its tail.

One of Fluffy’s heads bent down and started gnawing on a chair leg.

The last head licked Lilith’s face.

Gene nodded.

“Of course.”

Lilith practiced coordinating fluffy and  her skeletal ravens, using them as scouts, distractions, and aerial thieves.

Mother Sarah focused on movement.

She easily slipped between shadows and mirrors, appearing anywhere in the hotel with unsettling ease.

Gene quickly realized that in a capture-the-flag scenario, Mother Sarah was an absolute menace.

“She can literally teleport.”

Selene smiled.

“Your opponents are going to hate this.”

⸻

Pre-Match Nerves

On the morning of the match, Gene found Lilith standing on the balcony outside his suite.

She wore her finest battle dress: black velvet reinforced with silver-thread enchantments.

Her freshly polished tiny crown gleamed.

Fluffy sat beside her, all three heads alert.

Lilith looked unusually quiet.

Gene knelt beside her.

“Nervous?”

She nodded.

“Yes, just a little.”

Gene rested a hand on her shoulder.

“That’s normal.”

Lilith looked down at the arena bracelet on her wrist.

“Papa… What if I make a mistake?”

Gene smiled gently.

“Then you’ll learn from your mistakes.”

“What if I lose?”

Gene brushed a curl from her face.

“I’ll still be proud of you.”

Lilith’s eyes shone.

“Really?”

Gene kissed her forehead.

“Really.”

She threw her arms around him.

“I’ll do my best.”

Gene hugged her tightly.

“That’s all I ask.”

Behind them, Mother Sarah stood in the doorway.

Her expression was warm.

“Lady Lilith.”

Lilith straightened.

“Yes, Mother Sarah?”

The nun approached and adjusted Lilith’s crown.

“Remember your lessons.”

Lilith nodded solemnly.

“Stay calm. Think before acting. No unnecessary gloating.”

Mother Sarah arched an eyebrow.

“A little gloating is acceptable , however you need to know when to properly reveal such an activity.”

Lilith smiled.

“Yes, Mother Sarah.”

⸻

The Arena

The stadium was packed.

Word had spread quickly that Gene’s “little princess” would compete.

Spectators buzzed with anticipation as Gene entered the contestant platform with Selene at his side.

Across the field, Adrian Blackwell stood in polished silver armor.

He looked smug.

At his side had materialized the White Stag Knight.

It was a radiant warrior clad in gleaming plate armor and mounted on an ethereal stag whose antlers shone like moonlight.

A second summon appeared beside him: a silver hawk spirit.

Fast, elegant, and very noble.

Also a very predictable animal.

The announcer’s voice boomed overhead.

“Today’s match is Capture the Flag! First team to seize the opposing banner and return it to base claims victory!”

The barriers rose.

Gene summoned his team.

Lilith appeared first, smiling brightly.

Mother Sarah materialized beside her like a shadow made flesh.

Fluffy bounded into existence with three eager barks.

A flock of skeletal ravens flew out Lilith’s shadow and circled overhead.

The crowd erupted.

Adrian laughed.

“I wanted to fight you Gene! But seems like you hide behind a child.”

Lilith tilted her head.

“Your battle was with me.

In the time preparing, I actually forgot how dimwitted and stupid you were.”

The audience howled with laughter.

Selene doubled over.

Adrian flushed crimson.

The signal sounded.

“Let the battle… Begin!”

⸻

Opening Moves

Two house banners materialized at opposite ends of the arena.

Lilith’s black standard banner bore the emblem of the Nightmare Grand Hotel.

Adrian’s silver banner displayed the Blackwell crest.

At the sound of the starting cheer, the White Stag Knight charged immediately.

Mother Sarah stepped into a nearby shadow and vanished.

The knight skidded to a halt.

Adrian frowned.

“Where—”

Mother Sarah emerged from the reflection of the knights own polished shield.

A telekinetic blast hurled the knight sideways.

The crowd roared.

Lilith clapped.

“Excellent work, Mother Sarah!”

The nun inclined her head.

“Thank you, Your Majesty.”

Fluffy sprinted forward, three heads snarling.

The silver hawk dove, but Lilith pointed upward.

“My birds are better.”

The skeletal ravens swarmed the hawk in a chaotic storm of wings and bone.

The hawk veered wildly, feathers scattering.

Lilith smiled with childlike delight.

“Get him!”

⸻

Adrian’s Counterattack

To his credit, Adrian recovered quickly.

The White Stag Knight regained his footing and pressed onward towards Lilith’s flag.

The hawk spirit broke free from the ravens and also streaked toward the Nightmare banner.

It looks like they planned to blitz the flag.

Lilith gasped.

“Mother Sarah!”

“I see them.”

Mother Sarah melted into the child’s mirror like shield and she exited the shadow cast by the flagpole and erupted behind the hawk.

One pale hand closed violently around its neck.

The hawk dissipated in a burst of silver light.

The audience cheered.

Lilith pumped her fist.

“Yes!”

Adrian cursed.

⸻

Fluffy Goes Fetch

Gene waited for the right moment.

Then he smiled.

“Lilith.”

She looked toward him.

Gene pointed to the enemy banner.

“Go get it.”

Lilith’s grin turned positively feral.

“Fluffy.”

The three-headed wolf crouched.

“Fetch.”

Fluffy launched across the arena.

The White Stag Knight moved to intercept, but Mother Sarah stepped from a shadow directly in its path.

Her gray eyes narrowed.

“You will not pass.”

The knight swung.

Mother Sarah dissolved into mist.

Her laughter echoed from every reflective surface.

Fluffy barreled past, seized the silver flag in one set of jaws, and turned for home.

Adrian shouted desperately.

The White Stag Knight broke free and charged after the wolf.

The crowd rose to its feet.

⸻

The Penitent Horror

The knight gained rapidly.

Fluffy raced toward the Nightmare base, banner streaming behind him.

Lilith bit her lip.

“Mother Sarah!”

The nun stood in the center of the field.

She closed her eyes.

Black shadows spread across the stone.

When she looked up again, her expression had changed.

“Forgive me.”

Her body unfolded into the Penitent Horror.

Seven feet of demonic limbs and backward-scuttling terror erupted into existence.

The audience screamed.

Mother Sarah raced across the battlefield in a blur, moving on four limbs with impossible speed.

Her monstrous face split into a horrific grin.

The White Stag Knight actually reared back in fear.

Mother Sarah struck.

The knight was launched starfishing across the arena.

The crowd erupted into stunned, hysterical cheers.

Fluffy crossed the finish line and dropped the enemy banner at Lilith’s feet.

The referee raised his hand.

“Victory—Gene Gingerline!”

⸻

A Queen’s Triumph

Lilith squealed and threw her arms around Fluffy’s center neck.

“We did it!”

Mother Sarah returned to her human form and smoothed her habit as if she had not just traumatized the stadium.

Lilith hugged her next.

“Thank you, Mother Sarah.”

The nun smiled softly.

“You were splendid.”

Adrian Blackwell stood speechless.

The smugness had evaporated entirely.

Selene met Lilith at the edge of the platform and picked her up.

“Seems like our daughter just humiliated a noble house.”

Gene beamed.

“I’ve never been prouder.”

⸻

Rewards

Back at the Nightmare Grand Hotel, the system chimed repeatedly as Gene entered the lobby.

⸻

LEVEL UP!

Gene Gingerline has reached Level 7.

Rewards:

• Stat increases

• 3 Mystery Crates

• 1 Domain Expansion Token

⸻

Lilith bounced excitedly beside him.

“Open them!”

The family gathered in the lounge.

Gene opened the first crate.

Gold light erupted.

⸻

REWARD:

5,000 Domain Points

⸻

Victor whistled.

The second crate shimmered.

⸻

REWARD:

Rare Upgrade Materials

⸻

The third crate glowed with deep blue light.

⸻

REWARD:

Blueprint Unlocked — Arcane Academy Building

A dedicated school structure designed to improve child education, summon development, and magical instruction.

⸻

Mother Sarah’s eyes widened.

“A school.”

Lilith clasped her hands.

“A real one?”

Gene smiled.

“I think we just found our next project.”

⸻

Building the Academy

Later that evening, Gene and Mother Sarah stood on an open section of the domain overlooking the hotel grounds.

The Domain Interface hovered between them.

The blueprint unfolded into a stunning design.

A grand gothic academy with soaring towers, stained-glass windows, spacious classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and a secure courtyard.

Mother Sarah studied the plans with visible excitement.

“It is magnificent.”

Gene turned to her.

“I’d like you to oversee it.”

Mother Sarah looked genuinely moved.

“You would entrust me with this?”

Gene smiled.

“Who better?”

The ghostly nun pressed a hand to her chest.

“Thank you, Gene.”

Together they customized the structure.

Mother Sarah added:

• Classrooms

• Dormitories

• A chapel

• Music rooms

• Art studios

Gene added:

• Monster-safe laboratories

• Defensive wards

• Secret passages

• Training arenas

Lilith contributed:

• A larger snack room

Mother Sarah pretended not to hear.

The school rose from the earth in a blaze of silver light.

Stone towers climbed skyward.

Stained glass gleamed.

Warm lights filled the windows.

The academy stood beside the hotel like a promise of the future.

Lilith squeezed Gene’s hand.

“It’s beautiful.”

Mother Sarah’s eyes glistened.

“It will be a place where every child can learn and feel safe.”

Gene looked at the school.

Then at the family gathered around him.

He smiled.

“We’re building something special.”

And for the first time since his death, Gene began to imagine not just the next battle.

But the generations that might one day call this haunted world home.
