Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 24: Mother Sarah

  • Next Chapter

The Nightmare Grand Hotel was loud.

Not in the sense of explosions, alarms, or Victor  announcing that he had once again “made a delightful breakthrough in ethically questionable gift of resurrection.”

Though all of those things still happened.

No, the hotel was loud in a warmer way.

Children laughed in the playroom.

NPC guests moved through the lobby with practiced routines.

Hank Dorsey complained to Detective Carla about suspicious footprints popping up in impossible places.

Twin girls played games with Lilith in the halls.

Skeletal ravens perched in the chandeliers like oddly well-behaved crows.

The once-empty hotel now felt lived in.

Gene Gingerline stood on the mezzanine overlooking the grand lobby, coffee in hand, and listened to the life he had created.

For a long moment, he simply smiled.

Then he heard a familiar voice.

“Papa!”

Lilith Nocturne raced up the staircase, black velvet dress fluttering around her legs, silver curls bouncing with each step. Her stuffed rabbit was tucked under one arm.

She launched herself into Gene’s waist.

Gene nearly spilled his coffee but managed to set the mug on the banister before scooping her up.

“Good morning, Lily.”

Lilith beamed.

“Good morning.”

She leaned in conspiratorially.

“Mr. Grady says the tea cart tried to bite him again.”

Gene nodded solemnly.

“That sounds totally like Gerald.”

Lilith giggled.

Gene shifted her to one arm and resumed looking over the lobby.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel was thriving.

And thriving, Gene had learned, came with a new problem.

Childcare.

While Lilith and the growing population of resident children spent most days inside the playroom.

All while the Caretaker hovered nearby acting as a bodyguard.

The NPC staff did their best to just survive.

The whole arrangement lacked structure.

The children needed school lessons.

Supervision.

Rules.

Someone patient enough to handle tea parties, story time, and the occasional stitched monstrosity wandering in from Victor and Morrigan’s laboratory.

Gene needed a teacher.

A protector.

A figure who could be loving, stern, and terrifying in equal measure.

His thoughts returned to the Nightmare Architect’s Manual.

He opened the black leather book and turned to the first page.

He could completely unlock the page using 2500 points.

“Ok hopefully you’ll be worth it.

A portrait shimmered into view.

A nun in a traditional black habit stood in a candlelit hallway.

Her pale hands clasped a rosary.

Her expression was serene and kind.

But the shadow on the wall behind her, had too many limbs.

The title appeared beneath the image.

Mother Sarah

Gene’s grin widened.

“Oh, after a bit of tweaking, and you will be absolutely perfect.”

⸻

Unlocking the First Blueprint

The summoning chamber glowed with silver candlelight.

Selene stood beside Gene, reading through the blueprint.

Her eyes moved over the notes.

“Protective of children. Powerful poltergeist. Reflection travel. Shadow movement.”

She reached the final section and raised one elegant eyebrow.

“‘Transforms into a demonic spider-like entity once provoked.’”

Gene spread his hands.

“Good teachers usually have a secret or two in their closets.”

Lilith sat in a velvet chair nearby, idly swinging her legs.

“Is she going to read me stories?”

“I hope so,” Gene said.

Lilith gasped.

“Can she also help me with my writing?”

Selene blinked.

“You need help with handwriting?”

Lilith looked offended.

“Mama you know my penmanship is very exquisite.”

She poked her fingers together.

“However, my spelling can be a bit dramatic.”

Selene kissed the top of her head.

“We’ll be sure to work on your grammar as well.”

Victor and Morrigan arrived, eager as always to witness a new addition to the family.

The Caretaker stood near Lilith, as protective as ever.

Gene placed the Manual on the summoning pedestal.

The page for Mother Sarah glowed.

The system projected the blueprint.

Proceed?

⸻

Gene took a steadying breath.

“Proceed.”

Gene stared at the terminal , hoping to himself, that the creature that came out would ultimately be exactly what they needed.

A few minutes passed.

Selene cleared her throat,” Uh Gene…”

“You seemed to have forgotten, that the  terminal still doesn’t work using voice commands?”

“Ah…. I can see that now.”

Gene pressed the button to proceed making the terminal hum.

Lilith giggled,” Papa you so very funny!”

The runes ignited.

A singing choir of distant voices echoed through the chamber.

Candle flames stretched upward.

The room temperature dropped until Gene’s breath fogged thick in front of him.

Swirling mist gathered over the summoning circle.

A woman stepped gracefully from within the haze.

She appeared to be in her early forties.

Her black habit was immaculately worn , the white collar stark against her ultra pale skin.

Her dark hair completed the frame of a composed, elegant face.

Grayish eyes navigated the room with calm intelligence.

A silver rosary hung from her fingers.

She folded her hands as she inclined her head.

“Peace be with this house.”

Her voice was soft and steady, carrying the quiet authority of someone accustomed to being obeyed.

Gene smiled.

“And also with you.”

Selene covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Mother Sarah’s lips curved in the faintest smile.

“I take it you will be my master Gene.”

“I am.”

She approached him and bowed her head.

“Thank you for giving me purpose.”

Then she turned to Lilith.

For a moment, the room held its breath.

Lilith hopped down from her chair and walked forward.

Mother Sarah knelt to meet her eye level.

“And you must be Lady Lilith.”

Lilith clasped her rabbit stuffed animal tightly as she gently bowed.

“That I am. It’s quite nice to meet you.”

Mother Sarah’s expression softened.

“I have heard that you have been watching many children.”

Lilith nodded proudly.

“Yes, I am their queen.”

Mother Sarah inclined her head.

“Then I shall be honored to help you.”

Lilith smiled brightly.

“I like you.”

The tension dissolved.

Gene exhaled.

The system chimed.

⸻

SUMMON COMPLETE

Mother Sarah — Epic Guardian-Class Spectral Entity

Assigned Role:

• Head Caregiver

• Instructor

• Child Protection Specialist

⸻

The Caretaker stepped forward.

Mother Sarah rose to her feet and regarded the towering slasher calmly.

“Ah,” she said. “You must be the one who guards them.”

The Caretaker bowed his head.

Mother Sarah offered him a small smile.

“You and I shall get along splendidly.”

The emotional link flared with mutual respect.

Gene leaned over,” looks like my terrifying babysitter network just became unionized.”

⸻

First Day of Class

The next morning, the playroom had definitely transformed.

Tiny desks appeared in neat rows.

A blackboard stood at the front of the room.

Books, maps, and educational materials filled newly installed shelves.

Mother Sarah stood before the class with hands folded.

She looked every inch the ideal schoolteacher.

Lilith sat in the front row, her crown slightly askew, rabbit in her lap.

Abby, Oliver, Milo, Sophie, Nora, and Nell filled the other desks.

Gene and Selene observed from the back.

Mother Sarah wrote her name on the board in big beautiful script.

Mother Sarah

“Good morning, children.”

“Good morning, Mother Sarah,” they chorused.

“Today we will learn arithmetic, reading, and why indoor levitation is inappropriate.”

Milo raised his hand.

“Even if it’s cool?”

She nodded.

“Especially if it is cool.”

The lesson proceeded with remarkable efficiency.

Mother Sarah was patient but firm.

When Oliver drifted into a daydream, she gently redirected him.

When Milo attempted to build a catapult from pencils, she confiscated the materials without breaking her stride.

And when Lilith produced a plate of cookies from seemingly nowhere and began distributing them under her desk—

Mother Sarah’s hand appeared.

Lilith looked up.

Mother Sarah held out her palm.

“Give them to me your Majesty.”

Lilith sighed dramatically and surrendered the cookies.

“But they are chocolate.”

“And they will still be chocolate after class.”

Lilith folded her arms.

“This is total tyranny.”

Mother Sarah placed the cookies into her desk drawer.

“This is developing structure.”

Selene bit her lip to suppress laughter.

Selene whispered, “I think she’s the first person in history to tell Lilith no.”

Gene smiled.

“I’m just shocked how easily she fits in here.”

⸻

The Friendly Rivalry

The conflict over snacks became a daily ritual between Lilith and mother Sarah.

Lilith tried smuggling treats into class in new creative ways.

Mother Sarah tended to discovered them with a supernatural inevitability.

Cookies found hidden in a dollhouse.

Candies concealed inside a storybook.

A cupcake somehow hidden beneath Lilith’s crown.

Each was cleanly confiscated. And kept until the end of the lesson.

Lilith would pout.

Mother Sarah would remain unmoved.

And after class, Mother Sarah would return the treats with a warm smile and an extra napkin.

Despite their differences, the two were clearly fond of one another.

Gene once found them in the reading nook after class.

Lilith sat curled against Mother Sarah’s side while the ghostly nun read aloud from a fairy tale.

Mother Sarah’s voice was gentle.

Lilith listened with rapt attention.

The sight was so wholesome that Gene nearly forgot Mother Sarah possessed a hidden form.

⸻

Ghost in the Hotel

Mother Sarah integrated into the hotel with unsettling elegance.

Mirrors no longer reflected only the room they occupied. Sometimes Gene glimpsed her standing quietly in the lobby glass, even when she was physically elsewhere.

Shadows lengthened around her like obedient servants.

If a child cried, she would appear almost instantly.

If an NPC guest became disruptive, furniture rearranged itself until the offender reconsidered.

One evening, Hank Dorsey accidentally tracked mud through the playroom.

The mop rose into the air and scrubbed the floor while Mother Sarah stood nearby with folded hands.

Hank later described the experience as “the most politely threatening cleaning I’ve ever witnessed.”

The system confirmed her effect.

⸻

GUARDIAN NETWORK ACTIVE

Children under Mother Sarah’s care gain:

• Emotional Stability

• Accelerated Learning

• Increased Safety

Hostile entities experience:

• Reduced morale

• Environmental interference

• Elevated fear response

⸻

Gene nodded approvingly.

“Worth every point.”

⸻

The Penitent Horror

A week later, Mother Sarah demonstrated her combat form.

Gene, Selene, and the other summons gathered in the training arena.

Mother Sarah stood in the center, serene and composed.

Gene addressed the group.

“Mother Sarah’s primary role is childcare.”

Victor raised a finger.

“Which means she is almost certainly terrifying.”

“Exactly.”

Mother Sarah folded her hands.

“I prefer not to frighten the children.”

Lilith, seated beside the Caretaker, raised her hand.

“I’m not frightened.”

Mother Sarah smiled.

“Because you are brave little one.”

Gene nodded.

“Ok, whenever you’re ready.”

Mother Sarah closed her eyes.

The lights flickered.

Her shadow started to twist.

Her body stretched upward to reach over seven feet tall.

Her back snapped as she bent onto her hands and feet.

Then the figure began to move backward.

Fast.

Far too fast.

Her limbs elongated into clawed appendages. Her habit split and flowed around a skeletal, spider-like frame. Long black hair spilled over her face.

Then the hair lifted.

A monstrous face grinned outward from the back of her head.

Rows of jagged teeth.

Glowing eyes.

A maw wide enough to bite through steel.

The now transformed Mother Sarah scuttled backward across the walls and ceiling in a blur of black limbs.

The motion was so violently unnatural that even Gene’s stomach tightened.

Selene stared.

“Dear gods.”

The creature jumped into a shadow and vanished.

She reappeared crawling through a mirror.

Then burst forth behind a training dummy, shredding it to splinters in a single motion.

Silence followed.

Mother Sarah’s form flowed backward into itself.

Within seconds she stood once more as a composed nun, smoothing her habit as though nothing unusual had happened.

Lilith clapped enthusiastically.

“That was wonderful!”

The Caretaker, to Gene’s surprise, inclined his head in what seemed to be approval.

Victor wiped his glasses.

“I believe I have fallen slightly in love.”

Morrigan patted his arm.

“Join the club.”

Gene let out a low whistle.

“Yeah.”

He made a mental note to definitely unleash Mother Sarah on Darian Vale if the opportunity arose.

⸻

Family Dinner

That evening, the extended household gathered in the hotel dining room.

NPC children chattered over soup and rolls.

Victor and Morrigan debated ethical reanimation.

Lilith argued that her dessert legally could count as a vegetable.

Mother Sarah calmly informed her that this was not the case.

The Caretaker sat beside Lilith, silently ensuring no one stole her pudding while she finished the last of her vegetables.

Gene looked around the table.

Selene sat at his right, smiling softly as she helped Sophie cut her food.

Mother Sarah poured tea.

Lilith laughed.

The children talked excitedly about their lessons.

Gene felt a quiet warmth spread through him.

The Nightmare Grand Hotel had become more than a battleground.

More than a domain.

It was a family.

A strange, haunted, deeply unconventional family.

But a family nonetheless.

Mother Sarah caught his eye.

“You have built something remarkable, Gene.”

He smiled.

“I had help.”

Selene squeezed his hand beneath the table.

Lilith raised her spoon.

“To Papa!”

The children cheered.

Victor and Morrigan lifted their glasses.

Even the Caretaker gave a solemn nod.

Gene laughed.

“To family.”

As the voices of children and monsters filled the grand dining hall, Gene realized that his greatest achievement was not the horrors he had summoned.

It was giving them a home.
