Summoner of Nightmares

Chapter 17: Doing a little research

Strategic Research

After a few active drills, Gene and Selene spread tournament records across the table in his private suite.

Books, notes, and crystal projections covered nearly every surface.

Selene sat on the floor beside the bed, legs folded beneath her, while Gene leaned over the desk.

He pointed to a profile.

“It looks here as though Cassian’s knight is a textbook straightforward fighter.”

“Straightforward,” Selene repeated, “if by straightforward you mean elite, heavily armored, and blessed by half a dozen support enchantments.”

Gene shrugged.

“Every boss has mechanics to exploit .”

Moira smiled behind her cup of tea.

“That is a very Gene thing to say.”

They worked together to analyze possible counters.

Cassian tended to rely on heroic symbolism, morale boosts, and precision swordsmanship.

The Caretaker’s strengths were attrition, fear, and psychological disruption.

Gene leaned back in his chair.

“If I can drag his knight into an environment that punishes confidence, I can level the field.”

Selene nodded.

“Your horror domain is perfect for that.”

“Now we just need to make sure you can use it  properly in battle.”

Moira stretched and headed out of the room to greet  room service, that was currently heading up the elevator.

The group had called them up to refresh the pot of tea and triangle sandwiches.

Selene looked up at him.

“I think that you really might win.”

Gene met her gaze.

The certainty in her voice hit him harder than he expected.

“Thanks.”

The room grew quieter.

Selene tucked a loose curl behind her ear.

“You know,” she said softly, “most people would have spent their first week here panicking.”

Gene smiled faintly.

“Most people weren’t already making up monsters before they came here.”

Selene chuckled.

“No. I suppose not.”

Their eyes lingered on one another.

The tension between them felt increasingly difficult to ignore.

They slowly inched their fingers towards each others.

A loud crash echoed out from the basement.

The hotel shook slightly making the glassware clink in their respective places.

Victor’s voice rang from the overhead speaker system.

“Good news! The revenant is now ambulatory!”

Morrigan’s voice followed.

“Bad news! It has caught on fire!”

Selene burst into laughter.

The moment between them had broken in spectacular fashion.

Gene sighed.

“Story of my life.”

Tactical Drills

Over the next two days, Gene pushed his summons relentlessly.

Victor and Morrigan managed to develop experimental augmentations to boost the Caretakers body and powers.

The result of which, was a monster who could practically shrug off most punishment and continue advancing with mechanical certainty.

Summon Caretaker

Skills Aquired:

• Reinforced skeletal anchors

• Improved target tracking

• Controlled adrenaline suppression

Meanwhile, the NPCs simulated various scenarios.

Detective Carla attempted to “solve” the haunting in the hotel.

Hank Dorsey fled the hotel repeatedly.

The twins unnerved everyone equally.

Each interaction generated experience.

The hotel itself became a living training ecosystem.

Gene also practiced command efficiency.

At first, he relied on spoken orders.

By the end of the second day, he could issue complex tactical instructions mentally.

The Caretaker responded instantly.

Victor and Morrigan coordinated without needing explicit commands.

Gene’s team was beginning to function as a unit.

The Gift from Selene

On the eve of the tournament, Selene found Gene standing on the hotel roof.

The sky above the Domain shimmered with unfamiliar constellations.

The wind carried the scent of rain and distant thunder.

Gene leaned against the stone parapet, staring into the mist.

Selene approached quietly.

“Nervous?”

Gene exhaled.

“Honestly? Yeah.”

He turned toward her.

“I know I have advantages. I know the Caretaker is strong. But this is the first time any of this matters outside my Domain.”

Selene stepped beside him.

“It matters inside your Domain too.”

Gene looked at her.

She held out a small silver charm shaped like an open book.

“For luck.”

He accepted it.

Their fingers brushed together slightly.

“Thank you.”

Selene smiled.

“You’ve already done something extraordinary, Gene.”

Her expression softened.

“You came to a world built on stories and found a way to tell one no one has heard before.”

Gene felt his throat tighten slightly.

“I’m glad you’re here.”

“So am I.”

For a moment neither of them moved.

Then Gene leaned forward.

Selene met him halfway.

Their kiss was gentle, tentative, and warm.

When they separated, Selene rested her forehead against his.

“Win tomorrow,” she whispered.

Gene smiled.

“I’ll do my best.”

“That’s all I’m asking.”

Night Before the Tournament

After Selene returned home, Gene sat alone in his room.

The Nightmare Architect’s Manual lay open on his desk.

Pages of future horrors glimmered in the firelight.

Below him, the hotel hummed with activity.

The Caretaker patrolled.

Victor and Morrigan worked late in the lab.

NPCs moved through the halls.

His world was surely coming together.

Gene closed the manual and stood.

He walked to the window.

Tomorrow he would step into an arena and face summoners who had been trained their entire lives.

But Gene had something they did not.

He understood fear.

He understood narrative.

And he understood that monsters were most dangerous when they seemed inevitable.

Behind him, a soft knock sounded at the door.

The Caretaker entered and stood silently.

Gene smiled.

“Couldn’t sleep either?”

The masked giant tilted his head.

Gene looked back out over the mist-covered grounds.

“Tomorrow,” he said quietly, “we introduce ourselves.”

The Caretaker’s mental voice echoed in his mind.

Tomorrow brings battle.

Gene’s smile widened.

“Exactly my friend, tomorrow will be interesting.”

He rested one hand on the windowsill as he watched the endless twilight beyond his hotel.

“Time to show these people true fear.”
