Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 14: The Guests Who Never Leave
Gene Gingerline had expected the Nightmare Grand Hotel to be quiet at night.
He had imagined the sort of silence that comes unique to old buildings.
Soft groaning of settling wood, the distant rattle of pipes, the whisper of wind slicing against tall dusty windows.
Instead, the hotel seemed to breathe.
Standing in the center of the grand lobby, Gene could feel slight movement all around him.
The immense structure seemed in possession of a heartbeat of its own.
Warm amber light spilled from wall sconces mounted in polished brass fixtures.
The crystal chandelier overhead shimmered like a cluster of captive stars, scattering reflections across the glossy black marble floor.
Somewhere deep within the building, the elevator cable hummed.
Air moved through the vast halls with a low sigh, carrying the scent of old cedar, dust, and rain.
The effect was eerie.
And yet, strangely comforting.
For the first time since his death, Gene felt like he was somewhere that belonged to him.
Not a cramped apartment with overdue bills and garbage stacked on the kitchen counter.
This felt to him like a home.
A profoundly haunted, potentially lethal home.
But a home nonetheless.
He stood near the front desk, hands in his pockets, staring at the grand staircase and up the tiers of balconies circling the central atrium.
Most of the doors above remained dark.
Empty.
Waiting.
Each one represented a future summon, a new monster, another story pulled from the dark corners of his imagination.
The Caretaker stood at the base of the stairs like a silent bellhop from hell, his blank white mask turned toward the entrance.
Always watching.
Always waiting.
Gene opened his status panel.

Gene rubbed his chin.
“Seven hundred and twenty points.”
He turned toward Selene, who sat behind the front desk with her boots propped on the polished wood, flipping through one of the hotel’s system manuals.
She looked entirely too comfortable for someone visiting a murder hotel.
Her emerald eyes lifted.
“You’re making that face again.”
Gene glanced at her.
“What face?”
“The one that says you’re about to spend all your money on something wildly impractical.”
He placed a hand over his heart.
“I prefer the term visionary investments.”
Selene laughed, the sound warm enough to cut through the chill atmosphere.
Moira had returned to the Seventh Tower earlier in the evening after reminding Gene, with all the warmth of a court summons, that his first tournament match was rapidly approaching.
Selene, on the other hand, had stayed.
Officially, she was there to help him optimize his domain.
Unofficially, Gene suspected neither of them was ready for the conversation to end.
That realization sent an unexpected warmth through his chest.
He turned the interface toward her.
“Take a look at this.”
A new menu hovered between them.
⸻

⸻
Selene sat up immediately.
Her eyes widened.
“Narrative NPC System?”
Gene grinned.
“I was hoping you’d react like that.”
She hopped over the desk and moved to his side, her shoulder brushing his as she leaned in to read.
Gene pretended not to notice how pleasant that felt.
“Narrative NPCs are semi-independent characters,” Selene said, excitement sharpening her voice. “They follow programmed archetypes, interact with your summons, and can populate your domain.”
Gene nodded.
“Basically, I can hire extras.”
“Extras?”
“You know. Background characters.”
Selene’s smile spread.
“In a horror world you absolutely need background people.”
Gene pointed upward.
“Exactly. What is a haunted hotel without suspicious guests, doomed investigators, and creepy maintenance staff?”
Selene looked delighted.
Gene bowed slightly.
“I accept both praise and baked goods.”
Without hesitation, he selected the upgrade.
The system chimed.
Mm

⸻
The hotel shuddered.
New doors appeared behind the front desk.
A brass service elevator materialized beside the staircase.
A silver panel unfolded in front of Gene.
⸻

⸻
Gene stared.
“Oh, this is fantastic.”
Selene was practically vibrating with less excitement.
“You can create an entire ecosystem.”
Gene tapped the button and Doomed Security Guard.
A burst of silver light coalesced into a stocky middle-aged man wearing a wrinkled security uniform.
He had a flashlight, a walkie-talkie, and the exhausted expression of someone who had accepted that his life choices had led him to exactly this point.
The man adjusted his cap.
“Night shift supervisor Hank Dorsey reporting for duty, sir.”
Gene blinked.
The NPC looked and sounded completely real.
Selene walked a slow circle around him.
“Incredible.”
Hank squinted at the Caretaker and paled.
“I’m not asking what that is.”
Gene nodded approvingly.
“Good instincts, Hank.”
He spent points creating more NPCs.
Two pale twin girls in matching dresses who silently roamed the upper halls.
A chain-smoking detective named Carla Mendez.
A jittery intern named Todd.
A stoic groundskeeper named Mr. Grady.
As each NPC appeared, the hotel grew more alive.
Footsteps echoed in distant hallways.
Elevators chimed.
Muted conversations drifted through the lobby.
Lights flickered in windows above.
The Nightmare Grand Hotel was no longer an empty shell.
It was inhabited.
Selene turned slowly, taking in the activity.
“It feels real.”
Gene smiled.
“That’s the idea.”
The interface displayed a new notification.
⸻
NPC NETWORK ACTIVE
All NPCs will:
• Maintain environmental immersion
• Trigger dynamic training scenarios
• Repair minor structural damage
• Provide emergent interactions
Summons gain bonus experience when interacting with NPC events.
⸻
Gene’s eyes lit up.
“So the Summons can practice stalking them of course.”
Selene looked horrified.
Then she laughed.
“That is genuinely terrifying.”
“I’ve been told.”
The Caretaker, as if understanding, turned his head toward the security guard.
Hank visibly gulped.
Gene made a mental note to apologize later.
Or at least offer him hazard pay.
