Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 12: Making The Hotel
The first thing Gene did after returning to his Domain was stand awkwardly in the middle of the field and stare blankly out into the scenery.
The twilight landscape stretched before him in an eerie, but serene silence.
Mist drifted in thin white ribbons across the grass, pooling in the low places like breath gathering in the lungs of some sleeping giant.
The sky above was a perpetual dusk—an endless gradient of bruised violet and deep indigo, with no visible sun, moon, or stars.
The horizon flickered at the edges, where the world dissolved into shimmering uncertainty.
Beyond those boundaries, reality looked unfinished, as though an artist had sketched the outline of a masterpiece but had not yet decided what colors to use.
The only fully formed structures were the Domain Hub and the black wrought-iron gate through which he had first entered this private universe.
The Hub rose from the field like a miniature fortress of polished obsidian and crystal, practical and elegant but lacking personality.
It was Functional.
It was Safe.
It was… Utterly unworthy of the monsters Gene intended to house.
The Caretaker stood a few yards away, his broad silhouette motionless against the drifting fog.
The white mask reflected the dim ambient light, blank and expressionless, as if it were carved from bone.
Even in stillness, he radiated an oppressive certainty, the same way a thundercloud radiated the promise of rain.
Deadly, yet peaceful at the same time.
Selene Ardent stood to Gene’s right, hugging her coat against the chill.
Wisps of her dark curls escaped the ribbon tying back her hair.
Her emerald eyes gleamed with anticipation.
Moira Valecourt stood on his left, arms crossed.
Her amber eyes narrowed as she surveyed the domain with her usual clinical precision.
Gene spread his arms wide.
“This,” he announced, “is where we build my haunted empire.”
The fog swirled as if in response.
He summoned the floating Domain Interface crystal to hover above the field.
The translucent cube rotated lazily, its facets reflecting stray rays of silver light.
“Interface,” Gene said, “activate Domain Edit Mode.”
The cube chimed.
The world in Gene’s eyes changed.
Light exploded outward in a shimmering wave.
The grass beneath Gene’s feet transformed into a luminous grid stretching to the horizon.
The Domain Hub dissolved into wireframe lines.
Semi-transparent menus appeared in the air, each packed with options, subcategories, and numerical values.
Blueprints unfolded around him like the pages of a giant pop-up book.
Gene’s eyes widened.
“Oh,” he whispered. “This is just beautiful.”
Selene stepped closer, staring at the various hovering menus.
“You’re smiling like someone who’s been handed the keys to a kingdom.”
Gene did not take his eyes off the interface.
“Because I technically have. And I will design this kingdom to be epic.”

⸻
Gene scrolled through the available structure options with eager fingers.
Castle.
Fortress.
Floating citadel.
Subterranean labyrinth.
Then he found the structure he wanted.
Grand Hotel
He selected it to be the largest size.
The world trembled.
A massive wireframe work erupted out from within the earth.
At first there was only a skeletal outline, then followed the foundation, support beams, and what looked like a central atrium.
The hotel grew rapidly into a towering structure of almost impossible proportions.
Gene’s breath caught.
The hotel stood twelve stories tall, fashioned from black stone and dark polished wood.
Hundreds of tall windows lined its façade, each framed by ornate ironwork.
Steep gables and jutting balconies cast long angular shadows.
Twin towers flanked the main structure like watchful sentinels.
A wide staircase climbed up to massive double doors of dark mahogany.
Above the entrance, glowing silver letters formed Gene’s custom written name.
THE NIGHTMARE GRAND HOTEL
Moira let out a sharp breath.
Selene clapped, “It looks like a place where people disappear.”
Gene grinned.
“Exactly the point.”
Selene studied the blueprint.
“The layout is highly modular.”
Gene nodded enthusiastically.
He began highlighting various sections.
“The lobby will become my command center. Every summon will get their own floor, room, or dedicated wing. I’m hoping to customize places to match their theme and abilities. “
Gene smiled and pointed out certain areas, “The basement will most likely become a training and containment area. The roof can host summoning rituals. And eventually—”
He used buttons on the display to zoom out.
Additional planned wings unfolded like branching limbs.
“As long as I get points, I can technically keep expanding .”
Selene looked impressed.
“You’re building a world designed to scale.”
Gene tapped his temple.
“Years of playing city-builders and survival games.”
Moira regarded him with a hint of approval.
“This is actually an efficient design.”
Gene clutched his chest theatrically.
“Did Moira just compliment me?”
“Do not become distracted.”
“Too late!!“
Gene was riding a wave of inspiration.
“Purchase structure.”
The interface asked for confirmation.
Gene pressed yes.
More points vanished.
The world roared to life.
The ground shook beneath them.
Stone erupted upward in great slabs of black granite veined with silver.
Steel beams rose like the ribs of a titanic beast.
Dark wood unfurled into walls and floors.
Thousands of windows formed in rapid succession, their glass planes reflecting the dim twilight.
This construction was not mechanical.
It was organic
As though the world itself were dreaming the building into existence.
Fog poured from the foundation, coiling around the structure while gargoyle statues materialized along ledges and corners.
Iron gates twisted and rearranged into shape, as lanterns flared to life with soft amber flames.
Within minutes, the Nightmare Grand Hotel now stood complete.
It dominated the landscape.
Elegant.
Foreboding.
Magnificent.
Gene felt a ridiculous swell of pride.
He had written dozens of haunted settings over the years.
This one was truly his.
Real.
“Welcome home,” he whispered.
The hotel answered.
The front doors swung open on their own.
“Did you mean for that to happen?”
Gene shrugged at Selene’s question as he started to pompously walk towards the hotel.
“Selene you know this guy loves being dramatic for no real reason.”
Moira walked closer to Selene shaking her head
She motioned for her to join her in following behind Gene.
