Summoner of Nightmares
Chapter 106: When Stories Awaken
Gene and Elias stood motionless.
Around them, war continued.
The clash of steel echoed across the valley. Dragons wheeled overhead.
Dark prayers rose from the ranks of the Hollow King’s cult.
The Nightmare Hotel stood like a black fortress in the center of it all, its lights glowing defiantly beneath the gray sky.
Neither Gene nor Elias moved.
They simply watched each other.
Athena’s voice quietly filled Gene’s helmet.
“Warning.”
“Target exhibits unstable magical fluctuations.”
“Probability of unknown abilities: Extremely High.”
Gene answered only with a slow breath.
“…I know.”
Across from him, Elias smiled beneath his porcelain mask.
“I’ve imagined this reunion so many times.”
“So have I,” Gene replied.
The Pale Watcher’s living tattoos shifted beneath his skin.
“Good.”
“I was hoping you’d say that.”
Both vanished.
The ground exploded beneath where they had stood moments before.
Gene’s slime armor flowed over his arm, becoming a massive shield as Elias’s elongated claws struck like lightning.
A shockwave rolled across the battlefield.
Nearby combatants instinctively backed away.
Neither side wanted to be anywhere near that duel.
Gene countered with a heavy punch.
Elias twisted impossibly, his body bending far beyond what should have been possible.
The attack struck only empty air.
“My, my,” Elias laughed.
“You’ve become interesting.”
Gene answered by extending black tendrils from his armor.
They lashed outward like a whip.
Elias danced between them, every movement graceful and unsettling.
The fight became a blur.
⸻
Far behind the front lines, four High Priests gathered in a circle.
Their staffs struck the earth together.
Green light spread beneath them.
Ancient symbols emerged across the battlefield.
One priest raised both hands.
“Open the way!”
Another continued the chant.
“The Hollow King commands it!”
A third added his voice.
“Let forgotten worlds answer!”
The magic circle expanded until it stretched hundreds of feet across.
The sky itself began to split.
Clouds spiraled inward.
Reality cracked.
Athena immediately responded.
“Massive dimensional anomaly detected.”
“Unknown gateway forming.”
Mother Sarah looked toward the magic circle.
“…They seem to be bringing in reinforcements.”
⸻
Before the gateway could fully stabilize…
Strings descended out from the clouds.
Hundreds of them.
Spider silk thin.
Almost invisible.
Cultists stopped in confusion.
“What are those?”
The answer came immediately.
Wooden hands reached down the strings.
Then faces.
Dozens.
Hundreds.
The Possessed Marionettes descended silently.
Each wore cracked masks.
Each moved with impossible grace.
Their strings seemed attached to the clouds themselves.
One marionette landed gently beside a frightened cultist.
It tilted its head.
The cultist swung his sword.
The puppet caught the blade between delicate fingers.
Its head slowly rotated all the way around.
Then…
The puppet pointed.
Every nearby marionette turned toward the same person.
They moved together.
Perfectly synchronized.
The battlefield suddenly gained another nightmare.
⸻
The dimensional gateway widened.
A crimson throne emerged.
It rested upon the shoulders of an enormous crawling giant.
The creature moved on all fours like some monstrous beast of burden.
Upon the throne sat Queen Rosanella.
Her crown leaned crookedly upon her head.
She slowly clapped.
“My…”
“What an entertaining morning.”
One personality laughed.
Another frowned.
A third whispered,
“Kill them all.”
“No,” another argued.
“They’re guests.”
“They’re enemies.”
“They’re interesting.”
She sighed dramatically.
“Oh, would everyone please stop talking at once?”
She looked toward Mother Sarah.
“Oh.”
“A church.”
“How delightful.”
“I hate churches, so many rules!”
“Do you think they have doughnuts?”
“Ooo can we have a chocolate one?”
“ Focus, you lot need to focus!”
She slapped herself with both hands.
The giant carried her forward.
Nightmare creatures poured through the gateway behind her.
Twisted soldiers.
Living shadows.
Creatures stitched together from dreams and fears.
The battlefield trembled beneath their arrival.
⸻
Mother Sarah floated upward.
Behind her hovered Sister Miriam.
Sister Abigail.
Sister Lucille.
Their eyes met.
No words were needed.
The Dark Manuscript opened.
Its pages turned rapidly.
New symbols formed.
Athena quietly announced,
“Unknown fusion pattern detected.”
Mother Sarah nodded.
“It is time.”
The three sisters stepped together.
Their bodies dissolved into flowing darkness.
Veils became wings.
Prayers became echoes.
Light and shadow folded into one another.
The transformation continued until an immense figure stood upon the battlefield.
It resembled a colossal lamb.
Its wool appeared to be woven from drifting black mist.
Its horns curved like cathedral spires.
Six luminous eyes regarded the battlefield with solemn compassion.
Countless prayer ribbons floated around it, each covered in glowing scripture.
Where its hooves touched the earth, protective symbols spread outward.
Athena identified it.
“New Entity Registered.”
“Dark Chapel Fusion.”
“Designation: Lamb of Darkness.”
The great creature released a deep, resonant cry.
Not one of rage.
One that sounded like an ancient hymn.
Nightmare creatures hesitated.
The Lamb of Darkness stepped besides Mother Sarah’s Dark Choir MB.
One represented judgment.
The other represented sanctuary.
Together, they faced Rosanella’s advancing army.
The Queen smiled.
“Oh look at it!”
“It’s so cute!”
“We do rather like this game.”
“I don’t see any donuts tho…
⸻
Elsewhere, Gene and Elias continued exchanging impossible blows.
Neither gained an advantage.
Neither seemed willing to retreat.
For a rare moment…
They paused.
Breathing.
Watching.
Studying.
Then…
Crunch.
Crunch.
Crunch.
Both men slowly turned.
Several yards away…
A fairly comfortable looking couch sat in the middle of the battlefield.
No one knew where it had come from.
Rabbit lounged across one side.
The Cheshire Cat occupied the other.
Between them sat Lilith.
All three were eating popcorn.
Rabbit nodded thoughtfully.
“Good footwork.”
Cheshire smiled.
“I preferred the last exchange.”
Rabbit rolled his eyes.
“You always prefer style over substance.”
“Style matters.”
“It absolutely does not.”
“It absolutely does.”
Lilith quietly reached into the popcorn bowl.
“… you’re doing great papa!.”
Gene blinked.
“…What?”
Elias stared.
“…Hmmm?”
Rabbit looked offended.
“What?”
“We’re obviously spectating.”
Cheshire nodded.
“Quite professionally, I might add.”
Rabbit pointed toward Gene.
“I think you’ve got him.”
Cheshire shook his head.
“No, no,no. The porcelain fellow still has some hidden surprises left hidden.”
They continued debating.
Lilith looked back and forth between them.
Then she reached into her backpack.
She produced several bags of cookies.
“…If you help us…”
“I’ll give you more snacks.”
Silence.
Rabbit looked at Cheshire.
Cheshire looked at Rabbit.
Rabbit nodded.
“…She makes an excellent argument.”
“I completely agree. They make excellent accompaniments to the tea.”
Lilith happily handed over the cookies.
Rabbit stood and stretched.
“…Well then. I’ll be off!”
He casually leaned forward and Instead of falling onto the ground…
A crack of darkness opened beneath the couch and Rabbit disappeared into it.
Only his manic laughter remained.
Cheshire finished one last piece of popcorn.
He smiled wider.
Golden light briefly flashed inside his eyes.
It slowly became a patch of purple smoke.
His body dissolved with the wind.
His grin lingered longest before fading into mist.
Lilith waved.
“Bye bye! And I already know papa I’ll go back to the hotel to wait uggh!”
Lilith teleported back to the hotel lobby.
Seconds later, the battlefield erupted with startled cries.
Somewhere among the cult’s rear lines, impossible laughter echoed through the smoke.
Elsewhere, soldiers suddenly found themselves hopelessly lost despite standing in open fields.
Shadows began smiling back at those who looked too closely.
Gene slowly smiled.
“…Looks like we both have reinforcements now.”
Elias laughed.
“I was wondering when they would finally join.”
Neither man looked away from the other.
The war had grown larger.
Stranger.
And far more dangerous.
Their duel was only just beginning.
