Steampunk: Sixth Era Epic
Chapter 2269: The Doctor’s Wish
Chapter 2269: Chapter 2269: The Doctor’s Wish
The doctor pushed the box towards Shard:
"Unlike the Stone Mirror Demon: Goethe, non-human demons like Fanarius don’t have the habit of collecting valuable items to carry around. But it might be related to its crow-like form, as it always keeps some coins and glowing gemstones on it."
Though those gemstones are precious, they are all regular items. However, among the six coins, except for one that’s an unknown era’s antique silver coin, the other five coins are actually all relics.
Shard was quite satisfied with this:
"These are valuable enough, doctor. You know Luviya and I have always been collecting relic coins."
"As long as you’re not disappointed by the small haul."
The doctor slightly relaxed; he never thought Shard should help him:
"In a few days, I’ll craft an alchemical tool to help you find that crow’s nest in Moon Bay.
Evil Spirit Demons have no fixed form, but once they determine their fixed form, they tend to conform to the habits of that form. A typical example is the Flame Demon we first encountered in Sicarl Mountain. If I’m correct, Fanarius should have a Raven’s Nest in Moon Bay. I can’t guarantee there’ll be special coins inside, but picking up some gemstones should be possible."
"I have no specific expectations for any special finds; I’m very open-minded about it. Besides, today’s operation brought me other gains, doctor, you surely remember that Light Sword."
The blue-eyed psychiatrist indeed showed some discomfort:
"Of course, it’s worthy of being the power left by the Ancient God. Justice and light, it’s practically my natural nemesis."
"Yes, encountering that sword this time, in the future..."
Shard paused, setting down his wine glass with a puzzled expression:
"Doctor, I don’t recall telling you about that sword. Do you know the Sword of Light too?"
"Certainly."
The doctor nodded, finding Shard’s reaction rather odd:
"I’m familiar with a lot of knowledge related to demons and demon hunting, and it’s not the first time that sword has appeared in this world. Back in the ancient Third Era, there were many heroes who once drew that sword."
He paused momentarily to recall the knowledge in his mind:
"For instance, I remember a vampire kind demon hunter who once used a sword called ’Sorrow of Blood’ to draw the Sword of Light. This event is quite famous; you can check elsewhere."
Shard took a deep breath, and Little Mia, who was lying on his lap, mimicked him and took a deep breath too:
"Right, how did I forget to ask you about this."
He straightened his posture again:
"Doctor, the sword is related to the next seventh Chosen One. We need to draw the sword again. Given this, what else do you know?
Currently, I know that using the sword temporarily requires four conditions: an enemy that threatens civilization, a strong individual, the Heart of Justice, and a sufficiently strong holy sword as a carrier; but obtaining the sword permanently requires a complex ritual that we know nothing about."
The doctor sat on the short sofa opposite Shard, holding a wine glass and pondering:
"This question really isn’t easy to answer. The Sword of Light, or rather, the Dragon Sword, is one of the few weapons that can directly harm the demon’s body, but that weapon is also akin to legend for me. I never thought I’d ever have the chance to encounter it myself.
How to draw the sword, I do not know, but I do know some little stories related to that sword. Do you want to hear them?"
"Of course."
"Alright then."
The doctor also placed his wine glass on the coffee table:
"Calling them little stories is somewhat misleading, as they lack a fleshed-out storyline. Like, there was once a vampire kind demon hunter who, under extreme conditions, received the Ancient God’s compassion and drew the Sword of Light.
But after battling demons and sealing them almost permanently, that ancient hero also died of exhaustion. Using that sword requires a price, and a divine creation isn’t something to be used recklessly."
At this point, he asked with concern:
"I forgot to ask earlier, is Miss Sianod awake? She only swung the sword three times; the problem shouldn’t be big."
"Yes, she’s awake. Her bloodline is special, and with that Little Unicorn by her side, there’s no need to worry about her."
The doctor nodded, continuing:
"Besides, how is your physics?"
This question seemed odd, but the outlander, who almost earned the highest degree back in his hometown, nodded:
"It’s pretty good, at least my foundational knowledge is solid."
"Then you should know that white light can actually be considered as a mixture of countless different color rays.
According to the knowledge I know, the white ’Sword of Light’ we saw today is actually the most basic form of that sword, also its weakest form. Only when the user of the sword can transform it into different colors, it can be considered as the second form of the ’Sword of Light’, but it’s quite obvious that Miss Sianod doesn’t have that ability yet."
The doctor said casually:
"As for the final form of the ’Sword of Light’, that’s just legend. To become light itself along with the sword, yes, that’s all I know."
"Interesting theory, does that sword really have different forms?"
Shard pondered deeply, extending his right hand in a grasping motion;
"Truly fascinating, white light at first, then transforming into a light sword with specific colors. If it were me using it, probably it would be... hmm?"
He suddenly froze and looked at the doctor, who laughed:
"Looks like you’ve realized, yes, you guessed correctly. There’s a saying that suggests the source of your mastery in arcane technique is this sword."
He watched as the Moonlight Greatsword with intricate rune strings formed in Shard’s hand:
"Using light as a sword, it’s said that ancient sages, after seeing the ’Sword of Light’, created the ’Moonlight Greatsword’ and the ’Sunlight Greatsword’... I’ve always been curious, why isn’t there a ’Starlight Greatsword’? Is it because the light from stars is very dim?"
The doctor contemplated this complex issue, while Shard looked somewhat surprised at the spiritual weapon in his hand:
"But doctor, the information in the Academy Library doesn’t... "
"Yes, but is the information in the Academy always 100% correct? Detective, what I’m telling you is just one of the theories, perhaps both theories are mistaken."
He shook his head at Shard:
"Some things are really too far from us, so far that even the Circle Sorcerers can only hear fragmented words amidst whispers. Don’t overthink it, compared to the source of power, the manifestation of power in your hand is what truly matters."
Shard nodded thoughtfully, continuing to look at the ’Moonlight Greatsword’ in his hand. Meanwhile, the doctor picked up his glass, took another sip, and suddenly asked:
"Speaking of which, when flying over the city this morning, I smelled another very faint demonic stench at Moon Bay. It seemed like... a succubus? No, not an Evil Spirit Demon, just a simple Exotic Species demon. Detective, do you have any leads on this?"
Shard hesitated for a moment, then nodded:
"Yes, a count’s estate has been completely corrupted by evil forces, with the countess and maids there falling into succubi. However, it’s not the Evil Spirit Demon behind this, but its terrifying extent doesn’t fall short. This matter doesn’t need attention for now, the opposing side promised to restrict the succubi’s actions."
The doctor nodded, indifferent to what Shard had said, since it’s not those ancient evil spirits, it’s unrelated to him:
"Moon Bay is really a dangerous place, hearing you say there’s quite a number of dragons lurking in the surrounding sea area? If you need my assistance at Moon Bay, feel free to speak up. There’s no rush for me to advance to Nine Rings, I’ve gathered plenty of materials myself over the last year hunting demons with you, not as strapped as before."
"I’ll speak up if necessary, but let’s focus on preparing for next week’s exam first, there’s only seven days left."
Shard paused, his eyes slightly cast downward, before finally asking the question:
"Doctor, after digesting so many demons consecutively, will the slight control loss like Priest Augustus happen to you?"
He stopped stroking the cat, knowing exactly what Shard wanted to ask:
"I can only say, at least for now, there’s no issue."
His tone was very relaxed:
"Mr. Sherf Tim and Miss Shana Aya... speaking of which, when that incident happened back then, Team Leader Tim was also at Eight Rings, time really flies, I’ve already reached the same level as him."
The doctor sighed a bit, then sat up straight and spoke to Shard:
"Remember, detective, I once told you after the Human Pus incident that if one day you suspect I’ve lost control, don’t hesitate to put on the ’Demon Hunting Seal’, grip your ’Night Watchman’, and kill me.
Your existence allows me to swallow demons so rapidly. You’re my insurance, and that’s why I’m not afraid of losing control."
Seeing the expression on Shard’s face at this moment, he laughed lightly and waved his hand:
"Of course, that’s still far-off. Currently, I’m merely at the Inner Ring, detective, our small group of five will journey very, very far together.
I look forward to traveling by train to the King’s North town with you all, passing through Winterfell’s outpost, trekking across the Far North Great Ice Cap, traveling through snowstorms and spending nights in igloos during the long polar night, finally hand in hand, witnessing our footsteps arrive at the gate of Saint Byrons Integrated Academy."
He raised his head and looked at the central lamp on the room’s ceiling, his eyes seemed to sparkle:
"According to tradition, the professors from the Academy will form a welcome group to greet each correspondence student returning to the Academy.
What will happen then? Will Priest Augustus complain about having to journey so far at his old age? Will Luisa create more enchanting stories based on our experiences? Will Annette discover more fates under that starry sky?
No, I don’t know, but I truly look forward to that day, Shard, I genuinely anticipate its arrival. So, let’s continue to walk along, don’t let go of anyone’s hand around you, don’t let us drift apart."
