Chapter 249: The Asura’s Precision, Flawless Execution
"He is very efficient," Erebus noted flatly. "And he gives me snacks. Do you want one?"
Seren slowly shook her head, unable to take her eyes off Dante.
"I... I have never seen a warrior fight like that," Seren whispered, her voice trembling. "You didn’t even use a spell. You just... hit it."
"I hit it very specifically," Dante corrected her.
He walked over to the spot where the Leviathan had been deleted. Because he possessed the [Zenith Incarnate] title, the boss dropped a massive, glowing pile of high-tier loot onto the solid permafrost.
He activated the [Band of the Void-Walker] and vacuumed the gold coins, the massive, jagged ice scales, and the dark demon crafting materials into his infinite inventory.
He found one unique item sitting at the bottom of the pile. It was a heavy, ornate silver necklace adorned with a deep, pulsing blue gemstone.
[Item Appraised: Amulet of the Frost-King]
[Tier: Divine]
[Type: Accessory (Neck)]
[Stats: +1,500 Magical Defense, +500 Intelligence.]
[Passive (Deep Chill): All attacks have a 25% chance to inflict a 2-second ’Freeze’ debuff, ignoring standard crowd-control immunities.]
"That’s a fantastic upgrade for a mage," Dante noted, storing the amulet in his void ring. He would give it to Lila when he returned to the Citadel. The passive freeze chance paired with her chantless gravity magic would make her localized crowd control completely unbreakable.
Dante turned his attention back to the surrounding environment.
The [Glacial Epoch] spell had permanently flash-frozen a one-mile radius of the Mirage Mire. The toxic, hallucinogenic mud was solid ice, and the glitching, corrupted willow trees were encased in thick frost. The immediate area was perfectly safe.
"Which way is Radiant Lake?" Dante asked Seren.
The Princess blinked, shaking off her shock. She pointed a trembling finger toward the east.
"It is roughly ten miles in that direction," Seren said. "But the terrain grows increasingly unstable the closer we get to the Sovereign’s sanctuary. The Arch-Administrator’s corruption is localized there."
"Then we need to move fast," Dante said.
He didn’t offer her a ride on a Griffon or activate [Velocity Paradox] to carry her. The [Velocity Paradox] made the user intangible, and he couldn’t carry a tangible NPC while phased through reality. They had to walk.
"Stay close," Dante ordered, leading the way across the permafrost.
They walked for an hour.
As they reached the edge of the one-mile frozen radius created by Dante’s spell, the environment violently shifted back to the chaotic, glitching nightmare of the Mirage Mire. The solid ice ended abruptly, dropping back into thick, bubbling purple mud.
The sky above them continued to fragment, flashing between a serene twilight and harsh, aggressive green digital static.
"The corruption is getting worse," Dante noted, stepping carefully onto a patch of glowing blue moss. His [Dragon’s Insight] was working overtime, constantly updating the analytical grid to help him avoid localized pockets of deleted code.
"We are close," Seren whispered, looking around nervously. "We have crossed the outer boundary."
Before Dante could ask how much further they had to go, his Intuition stat pinged.
It wasn’t a hostile, aggressive threat like the crocodiles or the Leviathan. It was a localized, organized presence.
He raised a hand, halting the group.
Dante peered through the thick, toxic fog.
Roughly a hundred yards ahead, situated on a massive, relatively stable island of solid, petrified wood, was a heavily fortified encampment.
The encampment wasn’t built from the surrounding swamp materials. It consisted of large, pristine white tents and heavy wooden palisades. Glowing, silver banners hung from the watchtowers, depicting the crest of a roaring lion forged from lightning.
"An outpost," Dante noted.
Seren gasped, a look of profound relief washing over her face. She practically sagged against a nearby tree trunk.
"The Storm-Mane Clan," Seren breathed, pointing at the silver banners. "They are a powerful faction of Lion-Fey hybrids. They are absolutely loyal to my mother. We made it."
Dante didn’t immediately relax.
He kept [Dragon’s Insight] active, scanning the encampment from a distance.
Dozens of heavily armored guards patrolled the wooden palisades. They looked like massive, muscular humans, but they possessed the thick, golden manes and sharp features of lions. They wielded long, curved halberds that crackled with localized lightning magic.
[Entity Identified: Storm-Mane Guard]
[Faction: Royal Sylvan (Loyalist)]
[Level: 45]
The system identified them as Loyalists. They weren’t currently hostile.
But Dante wasn’t a standard player who blindly trusted NPC nametags. He looked closer, focusing his True Vision directly on the armor worn by the guards patrolling the watchtower.
"Seren," Dante said quietly, not taking his eyes off the encampment.
"Yes?" the Princess asked, wiping a tear of relief from her eye.
"Are the Storm-Manes supposed to glow green?" Dante asked.
Seren frowned. "Green? No. Their magic is lightning. It is bright silver and blue. Why?"
Dante didn’t answer her.
Through the analytical grid of [Dragon’s Insight], Dante could see something the naked eye couldn’t. The pristine, silver armor worn by the Storm-Mane guards looked perfectly normal on the surface. But underneath the localized textures, microscopic, incredibly faint lines of glowing green digital static pulsed rhythmically.
It was the exact same administrative code that had corrupted the Beast-Kin army and the Emperor.
The system identified them as Loyalists, but the underlying code told a completely different story. The guards were compromised.
"They’re mind-controlled," Dante deduced instantly.
He didn’t panic. He didn’t draw his sword and charge the outpost. He needed more information, and he couldn’t get it by slaughtering the entire camp from a distance. He needed to know who was holding the leash.
Dante turned off the visual grid, his vision returning to the standard, foggy view of the swamp.
"Seren," Dante said, keeping his voice incredibly calm. "We’re going to walk into that camp. You are going to smile. You are going to act perfectly normal. Do not mention the green static. Do not look afraid."
Seren stared at him, confused. "But they are loyalists. They will protect us."
"They might," Dante agreed smoothly. "But I’m the guy who has to protect you if they don’t. Just follow my lead."
Dante didn’t activate his [Veil of the Unseen]. He didn’t want to trigger a defensive response by sneaking into a supposedly friendly encampment.
He stepped out of the fog, walking openly toward the heavy wooden gates of the Storm-Mane outpost, completely visible in his glowing, dark purple armor. Seren followed closely behind, and Erebus trailed lazily in the back, still carrying her massive backpack.
"Halt!" a guard yelled from the watchtower, aiming a crackling lightning halberd at Dante. "State your business, Outworlder!"
Before Dante could answer, Seren stepped out from behind him.
"I am Princess Seren," she announced, trying to project her royal authority. "I require sanctuary."
The guards on the wall froze.
A moment later, the heavy wooden gates swung open.
A massive, imposing figure walked out to greet them. He was easily seven feet tall, possessing an incredibly thick, golden mane and wearing heavily customized, intricately carved silver armor. He didn’t carry a weapon, but he radiated an intense, localized cosmic weight.
[Entity Identified: Raijin, Clan Leader of the Storm-Manes]
[Faction: Royal Sylvan (Loyalist)]
[Level: 55]
Raijin saw Seren.
The Clan Leader didn’t raise a weapon. He dropped to one knee, bowing deeply.
"Princess," Raijin boomed, his voice filled with overwhelming relief. "You are safe. We feared the worst when the capital fell silent. Please, come inside. You are under our protection now."
Seren smiled, glancing back at Dante with a look that clearly said ’I told you so’.
Dante didn’t smile. He followed the Princess into the encampment, his eyes scanning every single guard they passed.
They were walking directly into a trap.
Dante walked through the heavy wooden gates of the Storm-Mane encampment.
The interior of the outpost was highly organized. Pristine white tents were arranged in perfect, military-style grids. Weapon racks holding crackling silver halberds and heavy iron shields lined the pathways. Dozens of massive, lion-fey hybrid warriors marched in synchronized patrols, their silver armor gleaming even in the dim, foggy light of the swamp.
Dante didn’t relax.
His Intuition stat wasn’t blaring an immediate, aggressive warning, but the underlying tension in the camp was palpable.
Raijin, the towering Clan Leader, stood up from his kneel and gestured expansively toward the largest, most ornate tent in the center of the encampment.
"Princess Seren," Raijin rumbled, his voice thick with genuine emotion. "We have been searching the Mire for you for days. When the Arch-Administrator’s corruption began localized purges in the capital, we assumed the worst. Your survival is a testament to the resilience of the Fey."
"I did not survive alone, Raijin," Seren said softly, gesturing to the towering Outworlder standing behind her. "This Champion escorted me through the deep swamp. He defeated the Corrupted Hunters and executed a Glacial-Maw Leviathan to ensure my safe passage."
Raijin turned his golden eyes toward Dante.
The Clan Leader evaluated the dark purple [Carapace of the Void-Devourer] and the heavy, starry fabric of the [Mantle of the Void-Dragon]. His gaze lingered on the [Zenith Epaulet] etched into the shoulder plating.
"An anomaly," Raijin noted, bowing his head slightly in respect. "The Conqueror of the Abyss. Your reputation precedes you, Outworlder. The Storm-Mane Clan owes you an unpayable debt. You have secured the future of our realm."
"I’m just doing a job," Dante replied smoothly.
He didn’t activate [Dragon’s Insight]. He had already seen the microscopic, corrupted green static hidden beneath the localized textures of the guards’ armor outside the gate. He didn’t need to check Raijin. He assumed the Clan Leader was compromised.
"Please, come inside," Raijin offered warmly. "The journey through the Mire is exhausting. We have prepared a feast for our scouts, but we will repurpose it for a royal welcome. You must rest before we plan our next move to save the Sovereign."
Seren smiled gratefully, exhaustion clearly evident on her pale face. "A meal would be wonderful, Raijin. Thank you."
The Princess walked toward the main tent.
Dante followed, keeping his hands casually away from his weapons. Erebus trudged behind him, completely ignoring the massive lion-kin warriors, clearly excited by the prospect of a feast.
They entered the command tent.
The interior was lavishly decorated, lined with thick furs and glowing silver lanterns. A massive, heavy oak table occupied the center of the room, already laden with platters of roasted meats, fresh exotic fruits, and highly ornate silver goblets filled with glowing, localized elixirs.
"Please, sit," Raijin commanded gently, pulling out a heavy wooden chair at the head of the table for Seren.
Seren sat down, letting out a long sigh of relief.
Dante didn’t sit. He stood near the entrance of the tent, crossing his arms over his chest piece. Erebus immediately climbed into a chair next to the Princess, grabbing a massive, roasted leg of an unidentifiable swamp beast and tearing a huge bite out of it.
"You do not eat, Champion?" Raijin asked, taking a seat opposite Seren.
"I’m not hungry," Dante lied.
"A pity," Raijin smiled, lifting his own silver goblet. "The meat is heavily spiced, and the nectar is brewed from the rarest luminescent flora in the Mire. It is a localized delicacy."
Raijin signaled to a nearby guard standing in the corner of the tent.
The guard stepped forward, carrying a beautifully crafted, sealed silver carafe. He poured a generous measure of a thick, glowing pink liquid into a goblet and set it directly in front of Seren.
"For the Princess," Raijin offered. "A restorative nectar to ease the trauma of your journey. It will calm your nerves and accelerate your passive mana regeneration."
Seren smiled, reaching for the goblet. "Thank you, Raijin. I have been surviving on the ambient mana of the swamp for days. This is exactly what I need."
