Chapter 221: The Crucible of Realms, An Admin’s Challenge
The global announcement declaring Silas the [Enforcer of the Zenith] hung in the sky for a full ten minutes.
It wasn’t a standard text box. It was a massive, glowing white banner that completely obscured the sun over the Veridian Alliance.
The message was clear: The system had officially chosen a champion, and his name was Silas.
Dante stood in the center of the ruined Crimson Laboratory, ignoring the frantic chatter of his squad.
"He’s a cheater," Casanova groaned, crossing his arms. "That is so incredibly unfair."
"The system doesn’t care about fairness," Dante said smoothly, dismissing the [Dawn-Breaker Blade] back to his hip. "It cares about control. I broke its control, so it gave Silas the keys to the server to fix the problem."
Before anyone could suggest retreating to the impenetrable safety of the Astral Emporium, a new, massive, server-wide announcement blared.
It wasn’t a message from Silas. It was a direct directive from the Arch-Administrator.
[CRITICAL SERVER EVENT TRIGGERED: THE CRUCIBLE OF REALMS]
[The balance of Overture has been compromised by unregulated anomalies.]
[To restore order, the Zenith Protocol initiates a mandatory, competitive progression trial.]
Dante narrowed his eyes. A mandatory event, seems like the duel will be postponed. Dante said to himself.
The text shifted from glowing white to a harsh, aggressive gold.
[Event Parameters:]
[The Crucible of Realms is an instanced, 12-player cooperative raid race. All major guild factions are required to participate. The objective is to clear fifty floors of scaled hazards and bosses faster than competing factions.]
[The Guild that secures the absolute fastest clear time will receive unimaginable wealth, permanent server-wide buffs, and undisputed territorial authority.]
[Any participating Guild that fails to complete the Crucible within the designated time limit will suffer a permanent, 20-level reduction penalty across their entire roster.]
The silence in the laboratory was profound.
A permanent twenty-level reduction.
It was a geopolitical death sentence. In the Zenith Protocol, losing a few levels from a standard death was painful, but losing twenty levels permanently meant your entire guild was instantly rendered obsolete.
You would be locked out of endgame zones, unable to equip high-tier gear, and completely defenseless against rival factions.
The system wasn’t just offering a reward; it was holding a loaded gun to the head of every single player on the server.
"He’s rigging the game," Sera realized, her face going completely pale. "Silas can’t just delete our guild without violating the system’s core terms of service. But if he forces us into a competitive race that he is mathematically guaranteed to win using his new admin privileges..."
"He deletes our progression legally," Dante finished the thought.
"We can’t compete against an admin!" Lila panicked, gripping her Dark Demon staff. "If Silas has zero cooldowns, he’ll just run through the dungeon and one-shot everything. We’ll be stuck fighting the first floor while he crosses the finish line!"
"Then we just have to be faster," Dante said flatly.
"Boss, how?" Mei asked, casually leaning on her massive frying pan. "You’re incredibly fast, but Silas literally has the cheat codes now."
Dante didn’t answer immediately. He looked down at the dark, jagged brand of [Voidsever] on his wrist, the new white veins of the [Source Code Fragment] pulsing softly.
He had an anti-virus. Silas had developer tools. It was going to be a messy fight.
"We need a full roster," Dante ordered, turning to Sera. "The system says it’s a twelve-man raid. We currently have eight. I need you to pull four elite players from the Aegis Vanguard reserves immediately."
Sera didn’t hesitate. She opened her guild administrative interface. "I’ll ping the top four performers from our independent recruit pool. They’ll be ready at the staging area."
Dante looked at the rest of his core squad.
Lila, the [Astral Arcanist].
Mei, the Brawler with the [God-Slaying Skillet].
Casanova, the [Titan’s Physique] bard.
Garrick, the [Spiteful Bulwark] tank.
Sera and Nyx, the logistical analysts.
Aria, the [Soul Weaver].
And himself, the [Asura Vanguard].
It was the most system-breaking group of misfits on the entire server.
"The system thinks it can out-math us," Dante said, a cold, dangerous smile touching his lips. "Let’s show the Arch-Administrator exactly why you don’t pick fights with anomalies."
*****
The capital city was in absolute, unadulterated chaos.
The announcement of the Crucible of Realms had thrown the entire player base into a panic. Guilds were frantically organizing their top twelve players, buying up every single high-tier potion and buff scroll on the market, absolutely desperate to avoid the twenty-level penalty.
Dante ignored the crowds. He marched his squad directly to the massive, glowing golden portal that had spawned in the center of the plaza, designated as the entrance to the Crucible instance.
Standing in front of the portal, surrounded by his own twelve-man elite squad, was Silas.
The Guild Master of Vanguard’s Legacy looked completely different. He wasn’t wearing his standard silver armor.
He wore a sleek, flawless suit of pure white celestial metal that practically hummed with admin-level authority.
His eyes glowed with a faint, unnatural green static.
Silas smirked as Dante approached.
"You showed up," Silas noted, his voice carrying an incredibly arrogant resonance. "I thought you might just delete your account and save me the trouble of crushing you."
Dante stopped a few feet away. "You look good in white, Silas. Did the system pick that out for you?"
Silas’s smirk faltered slightly, but he quickly recovered.
"You don’t understand the power I hold now, Dan," Silas boasted, gesturing to the massive golden portal. "I see the code. I see the underlying math of the server. Your little [Asura] class and your broken sword mean absolutely nothing when I can simply rewrite the localized gravity or adjust my own damage output to infinity."
"If you’re so powerful, why do you need an instanced race to beat me?" Dante challenged smoothly. "Why not just delete me right here in the plaza?"
Silas gritted his teeth. He couldn’t admit that the Arch-Administrator’s protocols still forced him to operate within the broad, generalized rules of the Zenith Protocol to maintain the illusion of a fair game. He had to beat Dante in a sanctioned event to legitimize the purge.
"I want the server to watch you fail," Silas hissed. "I want them to see the invincible anomaly get mathematically embarrassed. See you at the finish line, peasant."
Silas didn’t walk through the portal. He simply snapped his fingers.
He and his entire twelve-man squad instantly vanished, teleported directly into their dedicated Crucible instance.
"He didn’t even use the door," Casanova muttered, completely demoralized. "We are going to lose."
Dante didn’t respond. He looked at the four elite Aegis Vanguard recruits Sera had summoned. They were heavily armored and looked entirely terrified.
"Stick to the plan," Dante ordered the squad. "Aria, keep the [Hymn of Strength] up permanently. Garrick, you don’t drop the red shield unless I tell you to. Mei, you’re on crowd control."
He stepped up to the glowing golden portal.
[Participant: Dan (Guild Master: Aegis Vanguard)]
[Entering The Crucible of Realms...]
Dante stepped through the light.
The transition wasn’t smooth.
He materialized in a massive, enclosed stone room. The rest of his twelve-man squad landed heavily around him.
The environment was immediately, obviously hostile. The air was incredibly dense, smelling heavily of sulfur and poison.
The system interface slammed into his vision, flashing a highly irregular, glitching red text.
[The Crucible of Realms - Floor 1]
[Warning: Environmental Hazard Scaling Overridden.]
[Hazard Detected: Searing Atmosphere, Toxic Miasma, Heavy Gravity.]
"Boss," Nyx gasped, dropping to one knee as the immense gravitational pressure instantly pinned her. "The math... it’s wrong."
Dante looked at his status bar.
He wasn’t taking 50 points of fire damage a second. He was taking 5,000. The gravity wasn’t slowing him down by 10%; it was actively trying to crush him flat.
"Silas rigged the instance," Sera yelled over the roaring sound of the toxic wind, struggling to keep her merchant robes from catching fire.
"The Arch-Administrator dialed the environmental hazards in our specific instance up by a thousand percent! We can’t survive this!"
The four elite recruits instantly died.
They didn’t even have time to scream. The sheer, overwhelming combination of fire, poison, and gravity vaporized their Level 50 health pools in a single second. They exploded into blue pixels, immediately failing out of the dungeon.
The squad was down to eight members before the first door even opened.
Dante stood perfectly still, his [Frost-God Constitution] and [Aetherial Nectar] completely neutralizing the fire and the poison, but the gravity was heavily dragging on his avatar.
He looked at the heavy iron door leading deeper into the Crucible.
"He thinks changing the environment will slow us down," Dante whispered, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face.
Dante turned to his surviving squad.
"Lila!" Dante commanded over the roaring hazards. "Invert the gravity! Now!"
Lila didn’t hesitate. She slammed her staff into the floor.
[Skill Executed: Astral Bridge]
She didn’t create a platform. She actively pushed back against the rigged system pressure, neutralizing the crushing weight in a twenty-foot radius around the squad.
"Aria! Healing song!" Dante barked.
Aria brought the flute to her lips, instantly playing the soft, airy melody.
[Hidden Class Skill Activated: Life Song]
The massive 1,000 HP per second regeneration washed over the party, fighting back against the burning, toxic air, stabilizing Sera and Casanova’s rapidly dropping health bars.
Dante drew the [Dawn-Breaker Blade].
"He wants to play with the code," Dante said, stepping toward the heavy iron door. "Let’s show him what a real glitch looks like."
He didn’t wait for the door to open. He triggered [Meteor Stride].
He teleported straight through the solid iron, leaving a massive, ten-foot-wide wall of superheated plasma that completely melted the entrance, clearing the path for his squad.
The race against the system had begun.
