Chapter 357: Repairing The Sanctuary Ardent 3

"That sounds like another command center."

"Partly. But there is something else."

The map focused on the central chamber beneath them.

A single symbol appeared inside it.

It looked like a white circle surrounded by eight narrow lines.

Vaela’s expression changed.

"I have seen that mark."

"Where?" Astra asked.

"On old medical records. It was used for programs that combined genetic treatment, adaptation work, and long-term health planning."

Aurelian looked toward Eirenne.

"What is inside the chamber?"

"I still cannot access the full record, but the title is available."

The words appeared above the platform.

Human Continuance Matrix.

Rhoswen read it aloud.

"That does not sound like a weapon."

"No," Eirenne said. "It appears to be a medical and biological system."

Aurelian studied the partial data as more lines appeared.

The matrix had supported the preservation population before the sanctuary was sealed. It monitored inherited illness, long-term tissue damage, and adaptation problems caused by extended preservation.

It also held treatment plans for Human commanders whose bodies were exposed to repeated tier advancement, neural stress, and high-level fleet connections.

That last part held his attention.

"Why would a civilian sanctuary have treatment systems for commanders?" he asked.

"Because Sanctuary Ardent was not intended to remain isolated forever," Eirenne replied. "Its records assumed that a Human commander would eventually return, restore contact, and protect the population."

Astra looked toward Aurelian.

"This may be why the sanctuary required command compatibility."

"Perhaps."

The system did not offer him anything directly.

It only listed the matrix as available for inspection after medical clearance.

Aurelian preferred that.

He had no intention of stepping into an unknown biological machine simply because an ancient sanctuary claimed it could help commanders.

"Can it treat the awakened survivors?" Vaela asked.

"That appears to be its main purpose," Eirenne answered. "It may be able to repair some preservation damage that the upper medical systems cannot."

Vaela moved closer to the display.

"How quickly can we activate it?"

"Not until we inspect the lower chamber and confirm that its systems remain stable."

"Then we should inspect it now."

Aurelian looked at her.

"You have been awake through two battles."

"So have you."

"I am not responsible for a medical hall."

"You are responsible for the whole sanctuary."

Rhoswen looked between them.

"She has a point."

Astra ignored her.

"We should not rush into another sealed system while repairs are still underway."

Vaela’s expression tightened, but she nodded.

Aurelian understood her impatience. Hundreds of patients remained inside the sanctuary because their bodies were not stable enough for transport. If the matrix could help them, every hour mattered.

"We inspect the outer systems first," he decided. "Eirenne will run every check she can from this chamber. Vaela, bring two medical specialists and no patients. Nobody enters the central unit until we understand what it does."

"That is reasonable."

"Eirenne, can this chamber control the sanctuary without the main archive?"

"To a limited degree. It is designed for long-term planning rather than battle command."

"Then copy the new maps and lock access to the lower level."

"Understood."

Vaela looked at the complete sanctuary map floating above them.

"The Compact controlled this place for years and never knew how large it was."

"They controlled the halls they could reach," Aurelian said. "They never controlled the sanctuary."

The distinction mattered.

Sanctuary Ardent had survived occupation by hiding its most valuable parts, protecting its population, and waiting for lawful Human authority to return.

Now that authority belonged to Aurelian, at least for the moment.

He looked toward the lower map again.

The Continuity Vault had already given the Crownward March enough equipment to rebuild settlements.

If the Human Continuance Matrix could restore preservation injuries and help the awakened population recover, its value would be even greater.

It might also carry risks that the old records did not explain.

Aurelian had learned not to trust ancient systems simply because they were Human.

Humans made mistakes too.

He turned toward Vaela.

"Return to the medical halls. Prepare the specialists, but do not tell the patients what we found yet."

She frowned.

"Why?"

"Because we do not know whether it works."

Vaela considered that, then nodded.

"Fair."

She left with the two medical workers.

Rhoswen remained near the platform, studying the lower map.

"So are we going down?"

"After the checks."

"How long will that take?"

Eirenne answered before Aurelian could.

"Several hours."

Rhoswen sighed.

"I liked the answer better before you gave it."

Astra looked toward the vault entrance.

"The Arcturus convoy may arrive before then."

Aurelian checked the latest estimate.

The first convoy ships were now less than four hours away. By the time they reached Sanctuary Ardent, the repair crews would have cleared enough of the western launch area to receive them.

That support would bring engineers, medical vessels, fabrication equipment, and more people who would see what he had found.

Secrecy would become harder from that moment onward.

"We finish the first inspection before the convoy arrives," Aurelian said. "Only the medical team, the three of us, and Eirenne enter the lower section."

Rhoswen smiled.

"So we are going down."

"Yes."

"That is all I needed to hear."

Aurelian dismissed the full map and watched the hidden lower section disappear beneath the platform.

The fighting around Sanctuary Ardent had finally stopped, but the sanctuary itself was still opening.

Each new layer changed what Aurelian thought he had gained.

First, it had been a rescue.

Then a fortress.

Then a population large enough to shape the Crownward March.

Then the tools to build new settlements.

Now, beneath all of that, waited a system designed to preserve and strengthen the people who would carry Human civilization forward.

Aurelian did not know whether it would become their greatest advantage or another danger buried beneath the mountain.

He only knew they could not ignore it.

The chamber lights dimmed as they left, but the symbol of the Human Continuance Matrix remained visible above the platform.

Far below them, systems that had slept through centuries of occupation began their first internal checks.

Sanctuary Ardent had survived long enough to be reclaimed.

Now it was preparing to reveal what it had been built to protect.
