SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 38: Traces In Ash
Solvent fumes stung the nostrils outside the municipal morgue basement, masking the familiar copper stench of dead monsters with harsh chemical citrus.
"Bleach never smells like honest medical work," he muttered under his breath, stepping down the narrow entrance ramp while keeping daggers concealed.
’A cleanup crew arrived before the city sirens even finished winding down,’ he thought, studying fresh tire tracks pressed into morning grime.
Ruby flashed her blue Vega-6 identification card before the frightened desk attendant, resting her spear tip against the chipped counter.
"Emergency forensic inspection under regional outbreak authority," she announced in her sharp soldier voice, leaving zero room for civilian bureaucratic hesitation.
"The containment bay was sanitized two hours ago by special order," the clerk stammered, his fingers trembling as he unlocked the gate.
"Show us the intake ledger before I decide your desk looks like evidence," she answered, pushing past the swinging partition without pause.
The refrigerated storage vault opened with a sharp hiss of pressurized air, revealing three rows of empty stainless-steel examination slabs ahead.
"They cleaned every surface down to bare metal," he noted with a scowl, walking past the drain channels while scanning the tiles.
’Zero biological ash, zero Association evidence bags, and zero physical remnants of that synthetic monstrosity,’ he calculated with rising suspicion.
"This slab was washed with industrial degreaser used on refinery turbine engines," he muttered, smelling the residue on his calloused fingertips.
"Standard forensic protocol calls for biological samples to be archived for twenty years," she noted, checking the empty specimen cabinets with disgust.
’They wiped the biological records because a DNA analysis would prove this beast carried human gene splices,’ he calculated with rising anger.
Ruby tapped the central administrative terminal with her fingernail, watching the glowing monitor display a series of red error logs in sequence.
"All digital autopsy records overwritten by executive directive," she stated in a low murmur, her jaw tightening with grim professional anger.
"A high-level clearance key wiped the security footage at dawn," she added, pointing toward the blank surveillance camera above the doorway.
"They did not scrub the drainage trough under slab four," he observed, crouching low to inspect the dark grating beneath his sneakers.
Fin extended his right index finger between the narrow bars, retrieving a crumpled slip of thermal paper trapped against the suction valve.
’Someone in a hurry dropped this invoice while hosing down the blood,’ he thought, smoothing the crumpled slip against his thigh carefully.
The thermal paper carried zero monster classification tags or Association hazard stamps, displaying only a stark industrial serial sequence across the top.

"Look at this run number," he whispered, holding the thermal slip under the dim yellow light of the overhead utility fixture.
Ruby leaned over his shoulder, her eyes widening as she recognized the corporate classification codes printed along the lower receipt margin.
"Batch two... this abomination was manufactured on an assembly line," she breathed in disbelief, touching the faded purple ink with care.
"The factory serial numbers match military equipment requisition codes," she added, her face turning pale as the horrific implications settled in.
"They are not just closing wild gates," he answered in a flat tone, feeling his augmented bone density harden with anger.
"Someone on the High Council is cooking monsters in city basements to harvest cores," he concluded, rolling the thermal slip tightly.
"They used the Pacific disaster as cover," she said, crossing her arms over her tactical coat while pacing the floor.
"They pulled our best vanguards overseas to clear the district for testing," she added, her soldier instincts dissecting the conspiracy rapidly.
"They treat our lower neighborhoods like an unmonitored kitchen," he muttered, storing the dispatch paper directly into his sub-space inventory matrix.

"The rot reaches all the way to the executive floor of City Hall," she stated, looking toward the distant glass towers.
"Batch Two implies there was an earlier production run," she whispered, her eyes tracking the alphanumeric serial codes stamped across the margin.
"Batch One probably broke through the loading dock shortcut where an orc caved in my ribs," he answered in a quiet monotone.
’If Batch One matches the loading-dock records, my death was part of their test,’ he thought with sharp clarity.
"We need the physical surveillance drive before internal security sweeps this room," she warned, pulling a small screwdriver from her belt kit.
She stepped behind the mortuary monitor console, unscrewing the secondary junction box to pop the backup recording drive from its socket.
"This chip carries thirty minutes of looped video before the wipe occurred," she explained, pressing the drive into his open hand.

"Let them search an empty vault," he answered, listening for approaching footsteps in the quiet corridor beyond the frosted glass partition.
A loud mechanical buzzer sounded from the exterior gate, signaling that an Association security detail arrived at the upper loading dock.
"Time to end this shift," she whispered, guiding him toward the rear laundry chute that opened into the drainage alley outside.
They slipped through the narrow service hatch in absolute silence, dropping onto the cobblestones just as armed guards entered the morgue.
The morning sun hung low over the industrial chimneys, painting the soot-stained roofs of District Four in shades of pale copper.
"Gage is not acting alone on this contract," she said, leaning against the alley wall while catching her breath in silence.
"A B-rank captain cannot authorize municipal bleach teams to clean morgues," he agreed, checking the street corners with his enhanced sense.
’They attacked a shelter full of children to test manufactured beasts,’ he thought with dangerous, quiet fury.
"We take this evidence to your safehouse," she suggested, adjusting her spear before stepping out onto the crowded market boulevard.
"The Council will notice that their backup surveillance drive is missing by noon," she warned, tightening the strap of her spear harness.
"Let them notice after we reach the district boundary," he answered, checking the street corners with his enhanced sensory perception trait.
"Jolly already set up an accounting column for unpayable debts," he answered, remembering the red ink lines drawn across her notebook.
"Keep the drive off a public terminal," Ruby said. "The first thing they will search is an access log."
"We make a copy before we try opening anything."
"And record where it came from. Otherwise they call it something we planted."
Fin repeated the collection time while she wrote it beside the morgue location.
’Proof needs a route home too. Apparently even evidence comes with carrying charges.’
They walked together along the tram line, blending into the morning crowd of warehouse workers, delivery porters, and street vendors peacefully.
Behind them in the dark morgue basement, the empty examination slab still held a faint frost outline where the recovered remains rested.
Ruby reached across to touch his sleeve, her voice dropping into a solemn whisper that cut through the city noise around them.
"We are not just clearing dungeon rifts anymore, partner," she murmured, watching an Association patrol car cruise past the fruit market.
"We are hunting the predators who built this city," he answered, feeling the familiar balance of his hatchet resting against his ribs.
