Emergency sirens warbled through the night sky above District Four, their red reflection staining the low clouds with toxic crimson hues.

"The basement floor of the shelter is buckling under spatial pressure," his handheld radio crackled as Ruby reported from the frontline.

’The overnight evacuation moved Jolly from our apartment to Sefu’s group at the shelter,’ he thought, leaping across the low alley rooftops without hesitation.

The central civilian shelter groaned beneath violent tremors, its reinforced foundation plates fracturing as purple spatial lightning erupted from the lower basement.

Dozens of synthetic chimeras scrambled up through the shattered floor tiles, their mechanical claws clicking against the stone while tearing through barricades.

"Hold the stairwell entrance!" Ruby commanded, planting her spear and kite shield across the narrow doorway to block twenty charging beasts.

"Brace your balance!" he shouted, dropping through the shattered skylight to land directly into the swirling fray with drawn hatchet.

Bram, Jax, and Corin appeared at the secondary corridor entrance, brandishing chipped weapons while shouting defiance against the advancing synthetic horde.

"Take the stretcher handles and haul the injured children upstairs!" he ordered, deflecting a sweeping scorpion tail with his bare left forearm.

"We came to fight beside you, little brother!" Bram protested, raising his dented shield against a shower of caustic chemical sparks defensively.

"If you die in this basement, your blood is useless on my ledger," he answered in a flat tone, spinning into motion.

"Get them out now!" he barked, driving the reverse spike of his hatchet through the nearest mutant’s skull with a crisp snap.

The three veteran porters scrambled to obey, lifting injured civilians onto canvas stretchers before retreating toward the reinforced surface fire escapes.

"Two more chimeras scaling the ventilation duct on the right!" Ruby warned, thrusting her spear through a barbed joint cleanly.

"Got the ventilation duct covered," he shouted back, hurling a dark dagger across the room to pin the lead climber to the brick.

’Her shield positioning holds the main archway while I clear the secondary infiltration lines,’ he calculated with steady, packing-line focus.

’Twelve seconds to stabilize this doorway,’ he thought, feeling his accelerated perception dissect every hydraulic seam and synthetic muscle fiber.

He stowed the hatchet, drawing his daggers before turning toward the wall.

He blurred along the perimeter wall, his twin matte-black daggers carving clean arcs through five mutant throats in four rapid heartbeats.

An armored figure stepped through the purple rift in the basement floor, wearing stolen hunter skills like a poorly tailored winter coat.

The Synthetic Named boss brandished an oversized spear, its eyes glowing with bootleg system glyphs that mirrored his own abilities.

"Agh... biological anomaly detected, executing harvest protocol," the synthetic abomination hissed through artificial vocal cords, lunging forward with unnatural speed.

The creature initiated an artificial speed burst that closely mimicked his own Overclock, thrusting its blazing spear straight toward his throat.

He traded his right dagger for the hatchet as the next creature advanced.

"Genesis built you in an industrial vat using stolen hunter bone," he muttered, parrying a sweeping spear thrust with his hatchet head.

"Bio-telemetry confirms target anomaly, engage purge protocols," the machine vocalizer hissed, its synthetic ribs glowing with stolen celestial flame energy.

’It copied my timing, but it lacks the bone density,’ he thought, stepping inside the killing radius without blinking an eyelid.

He vaulted off a collapsed stone lintel, his sneakers catching the edge before driving his entire body weight downward through the air.

He struck the creature in mid-air, his dagger severing one optical sensor before his hatchet poll struck the exposed collar.

The concussive shockwave detonated through the basement chamber, shattering the remaining floor tiles as the synthetic titan crashed onto its back.

He returned the hatchet to storage, bringing his second dagger back into his grip.

"Stay down in the ash," he grunted, burying both daggers through its primary artificial mana core until the purple energy extinguished into smoke.

The synthetic boss shuddered violently, its copied skills dissolving into ribbons of gray ash as the artificial rift collapsed behind it.

He dropped onto one knee beside the smoking carcass, pressing his open palm against the shattered core to initiate instant absorption.

A dry, chalky sensation spread beneath his skin, sealing his pores against magical penetration like an invisible coat of protective paint.

’Anti-magic hide seats into the flesh,’ he noted silently, feeling his baseline magical defense climb without requiring an active stamina drain.

The Sponsor Channel crackled with sudden velvet malice, whispering through the burning smoke without an embodied presence in the dark room.

’Names are prices, little spark, and my price is coming due,’ the unnamed goddess murmured, her celestial amusement chilling his ribs.

"Send me the invoice after the city stops burning," he whispered back, standing up from the ash without showing a trace of fear.

The golden advancement bar barely moved despite the substantial bounty, leaving the two-and-a-half-million threshold standing like an unyielding mountain peak before him.

A shelter technician stumbled through the broken doorway, clutching a portable radar console with trembling hands while staring at the screen.

"A-Attention, all command officers... look at the oceanic tracking feed," the technician stammered, holding the device toward the flickering emergency lights.

"What is the radar showing?" Ruby asked in a ragged breath, leaning against her dented shield while wiping sweat from her brow.

"The Pacific disaster gate entity changed its trajectory," the technician whispered in horror, pointing at the blinking red directional vector line.

"The leviathan is turning toward our coastline," the man added, his voice breaking as the red arrow locked onto their province.

’It is not making landfall tonight, but the compass needle swung straight toward us,’ he thought, looking toward the dark eastern sky.

Fin stepped across the shattered floor tiles, reaching out to find Ruby’s dust-covered hand in the fading smoke of the basement.

Their calloused fingers laced together in the darkness, offering a steady mutual anchor that required neither spoken promises nor romantic declarations.

"Count again after the next door opens," Fin told the teacher through the link.

"Nobody leaves without an adult signing them out," Sefu answered. "That includes your sister."

Fin checked the stairwell before stepping aside for the responders approaching below.

’Sixty children alive is a result. Everything else can wait until the entrances are covered.’

Ruby squeezed his knuckles with quiet strength, her breathing steadying as their shared heartbeat matched the slow rhythm of the night.

Teacher Sefu’s voice echoed through the stairwell telephone link from the upper floor, breaking the tense silence with clear mathematical relief.

"Shelter group 3B is secure," the teacher called down through the speaker, "all sixty children are accounted for, headcount is complete."

"Jolly is safe," she murmured, leaning her forehead against his shoulder as the distant emergency sirens continued their mournful wail.

"The roof held today," he answered, looking down at their joined hands stained with gray dust and black synthetic monster blood.

"We held the gate, and we bought our people another sunrise," she agreed, leaning against his shoulder with tired relief.

"A compass needle does not lie about a storm," Ruby whispered, her fingers tightening around his calloused palm in the dark.

’When an SS-rank disaster turns toward a coast, every city along the water becomes an open grave,’ he thought with grim clarity.

Outside across the dark ocean waters, the red directional arrow on the radar screen pointed directly toward their quiet city coast.
