SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 120: Sealing the Tomb
Morning mist rose from the river surface as Orson unloaded four slatted crates from the back of the transport truck.
Bram stood beside the flatbed, helping two porters carry the sealed boxes of seismic charges across the slippery staging dock.
"We brought enough shaped blasting compound to bring down a mountain." Bram set a wooden box onto the gravel, wiping river spray from his chin. "Master Orson calculated the borehole depths down to the nearest millimeter."
"If we blow these four support nodes, thirty thousand tons of bedrock will drop straight down into the void." Orson unrolled a detailed structural blueprint across the hood of the truck, tapping the foundation pillars with his calloused finger. "The collapse will crush both lower sub-levels into powder without cracking the upper aqueduct."
Fin approached the truck, his hatchet resting securely against his hip as he examined the chalked diagrams.
"We verified that every living subject and every data core is safely out of the lower facility." Fin traced the route leading back toward Conduit Nine, nodding with quiet satisfaction. "Nothing remains down there except abandoned cages and scrap."
"The children are resting comfortably in our Pine Street shelter under nurse Marta’s supervision." Talla walked up from the administrative shed, holding three sealed evidence cases under her arm. "Every hard drive recovered from Sub-Level Five is cataloged and signed into municipal custody."
Corin walked over from the equipment locker, handing two spools of insulated firing wire to Bram with a confident grin.
"We checked the continuity on every blasting cap twice before leaving the yard." Corin dusted his gloves against his canvas trousers, glancing toward the river bridge. "The constables have the outer perimeter sealed so no civilian wanders into the blast zone."
"Then let us lay the wiring before the morning tide rolls in." Ruby picked up a spool of detonation wire, nodding toward the conduit entrance. "I want this horror show sealed forever."
The demolition team descended into Conduit Nine, their steps echoing along the wet stones of the lower bypass tunnel.
Orson worked with veteran efficiency, guiding the porters as they drilled angled boreholes into the bedrock foundations.
Jax held the secondary pneumatic drill steady, humming an old marching tune while grey stone dust coated his leather vest.
"These foundation blocks are dense granite, but our carbide bits are biting true." Jax paused to clear the drill shavings with a blast of compressed air. "Five more minutes and the primary row will be ready for the explosive sleeves."
Fin helped carry the shaped charges, placing each primed canister directly into the pre-drilled holes along the outer perimeter.
Darek watched from the catwalk above, his hands resting lightly against the railing as he observed the preparations.
"Four years of nightmares are sitting at the bottom of that shaft." Darek looked down into the spiral stairwell, his voice quiet and solemn. "Knowing it will all be crushed makes my chest feel lighter than ever."
"You never have to look back at this place again." Fin climbed up the ladder, clapping Darek firmly on the shoulder. "From today on, you only look forward."
Orson finished tamping the fourth charge with river sand, connecting the red detonation lines into a single junction box.
"Wiring is complete and all circuits show green on the test galvanometer." Orson stood up, wiping grey dust from his leather apron with a broad grin. "Everyone up the shaft before I plug in the primary blasting machine."
The squad climbed back to the surface level, clearing the conduit entrance and moving two hundred paces back onto the gravel staging area.
Orson set the plunger box onto an empty wooden spool, extending the black firing cable to its full length.
"The honors belong to you, Marshal Fin." Orson stepped back, offering the T-shaped wooden firing handle with both hands. "You broke this syndicate, so you get to close the lid on their coffin."
Fin took the firing handle, feeling the rough ash wood beneath his fingers as the team gathered behind him.
Ruby held her shield steady while Jolly and Nim watched from the open door of the municipal transport van.
"For every child they locked in a cage." Fin spoke clearly, his voice carrying firmly across the quiet riverbank.
He drove the wooden plunger straight down into the firing box with a single, decisive motion of his arm.
A muted tremor rippled through the earth beneath their feet, vibrating deep within the ancient bedrock of the river basin.
A low, subterranean rumble rolled outward, followed by a puff of grey dust venting from the conduit exhaust stack.
Deep underground, thirty thousand tons of solid granite collapsed downward into the empty chambers of Sub-Level Four and Sub-Level Five.
The laboratory, the holding pens, and the prototype chambers were crushed into an impenetrable layer of compacted stone.
The upper aqueduct shuddered slightly on its reinforced piers, but the masonry held true without a single hairline fracture.
Orson knelt beside the ground, resting his bare palm against the soil to feel the subterranean settling settle into complete stillness.
"Clean drop across all four quadrants." Orson looked up with a proud laugh, wiping a speck of grime from his cheek. "The void is sealed and the water pipes above did not drop a single drop of pressure."
A collective sigh of profound relief passed through the gathered companions as the tension drained from their shoulders.
Darek stared at the quiet conduit entrance, a slow, radiant smile spreading across his face for the very first time.
"It is truly gone." Darek looked down at his free hands as the autumn breeze ruffled his clean linen shirt. "They can never bring anyone down there again."
"Never again." Ruby agreed with a firm nod, resting the butt of her spear against the gravel as she watched the peaceful river current flow past.
The radiant blue interface flared before Fin’s eyes, filling his peripheral vision with warm, golden accomplishment text.

His experience tally crossed ninety million five hundred thousand, marching steadily toward the quarter-billion milestone for Rank B.
Talla stepped forward, locking the final brass clasp on the municipal evidence chest before sliding it into the hauler.
"With this physical archive and the whistleblower’s files, our case before Magistrate Hallowell is airtight." Talla adjusted her spectacles, her eyes shining with legal triumph. "The Merchant Cartel will not be able to wriggle out of their complicity."
"They will try every dirty trick in the municipal codebook." Fin walked toward the hauler, wiping soot from his hands with a clean cloth. "We need to prepare for whatever counter-attack they launch."
"Let them try whatever they want." Bram slammed the tailgate of the transport truck shut with a satisfying clatter. "Halden House has an entire district standing behind our shields."
The convoy rumbled to life, their diesel engines purring smoothly as the trucks turned back toward the safety of District Four.
Fin sat in the cab beside Bram, watching the river sparkle under the morning sun as the city awoke to another peaceful day.
Every step forward felt solid and unbreakable, built on the shared trust and courage of people who refused to bow to tyranny.
