SSS-Rank Awakening: My Infinite Absorption System
Chapter 115: Chemical Runoff
Sirens echoed across the canal basin as emergency chemical alarms flashed along the outer fence of District Two.
Fin checked the strap of his hatchet sheath while standing on the rain-slicked inspection curb near Conduit Nine.
Beside him, Darek adjusted the collar of his utility jacket, his eyes tracking the yellow warning lights blinking in the fog.
Emergency beacons flashed crimson across the murky water while distant vehicle engines revved along the northern service avenues.
Maya’s voice crackled sharply through their shared tactical earpieces, carrying urgent status reports from the central district monitor.
"A clean-up crew just breached the south pump house," Maya reported, her keyboard clattering rapidly in the background. "They opened the emergency dump valves on the secondary holding vats."
"How much acid are they trying to vent?" Fin asked, touching the comms link with his thumb.
"Thirty thousand gallons of acidic synthesis byproduct," Maya answered with grim precision. "If that sludge enters the municipal storm runoff pipes, it will corrode the main culvert and flood sixty tenement basements with toxic fumes."
"They want to melt the evidence before Magistrate Hallowell’s auditors arrive," Darek noted, his jaw setting hard as steam vented from his nostrils.
"Not on our watch," Fin stepped toward the manhole cover, hooking his fingers into the iron grating.
With a casual flex of one hundred and thirty-six Strength, Fin tossed the sixty-pound iron disc aside like a wooden toy.
"The sewer junctions beneath Conduit Nine are like a maze," Darek pointed down into the dark, swirling current below. "I spent two years navigating these discharge tunnels when I was scavenging food from the surface docks."
"Lead the way," Fin dropped through the opening, splashing down into waist-deep runoff with practiced balance.
Darek vaulted down immediately after him, landing cleanly on the narrow inspection ledge along the sewer wall.
The underground air was suffocating, thick with sulfuric fumes and the stinging vapor of dissolved industrial solvents.
Fin took a deep, steady breath, feeling his Abyssal Miasma Filter activate instantly within his respiratory lining.
The caustic fumes neutralized into cool, odorless air before reaching his lungs, allowing him to breathe without a single cough.
"Follow this central conduit for ninety yards," Darek gestured forward, his steps moving with fluid confidence through the gloom. "The main lime neutralizing tanks sit right beneath the municipal water plant’s primary intake basin."
The two surged forward through the murky water, their movements swift and silent beneath the vaulted ceiling.
Darek leaped from ledge to pipe with feral agility, his balance steady despite the slippery slime coating the masonry.
Fin matched his pace effortlessly, his one hundred and forty-three Agility allowing him to glide through the resistance of the water.
Darek kept his eyes peeled for submerged obstacles, pointing out rusted pipes and collapsed drainage grills before they could snag their footing.
The rushing current churned with yellow foam as chemical discharge seeped from the overflow vents along the upper ceiling.
Ahead in the darkness, the glow of halogen work lamps illuminated a wide underground junction box.
Eight men in sealed rubber hazmat suits were swarming around the massive cylindrical neutralizing tanks.
Two of them were attaching remote radio detonators to the primary intake manifolds, while six others stood guard with automatic flechette carbines.
"They are wiring thermite charges to the tank supports," Darek whispered, pressing his back against the curved wall. "If those tanks rupture, the lime neutralization process stops completely."
"Eight targets," Fin evaluated the layout with cold tactical precision, slipping his hatchet into his right hand. "We take them down before they trigger those detonators."
"I will flank the guards on the upper catwalk," Darek flexed his forearms, extending his bone blades with a soft metallic click. "Keep the demolition techs off the detonator switch."
"Move on my mark," Fin shifted his weight forward, coiling the muscles in his thighs like compressed springs. "Now!"
Fin exploded from the shadows, crossing thirty feet of open water in a single blinding burst of speed.
The nearest guard swung his carbine around, but Fin slapped the weapon’s barrel aside with his bare left hand.
Using the flat of his hatchet, Fin delivered a concussive strike to the man’s chest, shattering his armor plate and knocking him unconscious into the water.
Two more guards raised their rifles, opening fire with a volley of high-velocity steel flechettes.
Fin activated Depth Hydro-Locomotion, diving beneath the surface to let the deadly projectiles splash harmlessly through the foam above.
He erupted from the water behind the two shooters, sweeping their legs out with a low kick driven by his immense Strength.
Both men crashed onto the walkway, gasping in pain as Fin disarmed them with two swift kicks.
High above on the catwalk, Darek dropped down upon the third guard like a hunting hawk, hooking his bone blade around the rifle sling.
With a clean twist of his torso, Darek ripped the weapon from the guard’s grip and hurled it into the drainage sump.
He drove his elbow into the man’s solar plexus, knocking the wind from his lungs before sweeping him onto the grating.
The fourth guard attempted to bring his sidearm to bear, but Darek swept his leg in a wide arc, kicking the firearm into the rushing culvert below.
The two demolition technicians near the primary tank panicked, one of them reaching frantically into his chest pocket for the remote detonator.
"Do not even think about it," Fin appeared in front of the technician like a phantom, his hatchet spike resting half an inch from the man’s goggles.
The technician froze, his trembling fingers releasing the plastic detonator box until it dangled harmlessly from its cord.
"Hands on your heads, all of you," Fin ordered, his voice cold and unyielding as he looked across the disarmed saboteurs.
The remaining guards dropped their weapons onto the metal deck, raising their hands in total surrender.
Darek expertly gathered the discarded rifles, tossing them into an empty containment bin before cutting the wires to the thermite charges.
"All detonators disconnected," Darek reported, wiping sweat from his forehead with the back of his sleeve. "The neutralizing tanks are completely undamaged."
Sirens wailed above as municipal constables and Iron Dogs porters breached the street-level hatches, ropes dropping into the junction.
Corin dropped down the ladder first, his torch illuminating the subdued syndicate operatives kneeling in the water.
"Fine work down here, boss," Corin grinned, gesturing for his squad to begin zip-tying the prisoners. "The constables are waiting up top with two paddy wagons."
"Get them into custody before their legal fixers find out they were caught," Fin instructed, stepping onto the dry inspection platform.
A radiant blue system notification window expanded smoothly before Fin’s eyes, chiming with crisp, musical clarity in the damp culvert.

His experience pool surged forward once more, reaching seventy-six million two hundred thousand toward his Rank B breakthrough.
"That was clean teamwork, Darek," Fin clapped the youth on the shoulder as they climbed the service ladder toward the street.
"I know these tunnels," Darek smiled faintly, his eyes reflecting the daylight pouring through the open manhole above. "And I like keeping them clean."
