Tasha stayed very close to Micah. As they navigated the crowded streets on foot after parking the chariot, she walked beside him with a proximity that was just inside the boundary of professional.

Her shoulder was inches from his, and her eyes tracked every female soldier who walked past them.

A group of female veterans passed by on the opposite sidewalk. One of them looked at Micah a beat too long, and Tasha’s eyes locked onto the woman with a stare that was cold and direct.

The veteran noticed, looked away, and picked up her pace.

Tasha turned back to Micah, her expression completely unchanged, as if nothing had happened.

Micah didn’t comment.

The Capital Coliseum was the largest structure Micah had ever seen.

It rose from the center of the military district like a mountain of reinforced steel and concrete.

The exterior walls were fifty meters high and thick enough to withstand a direct artillery barrage.

The interior was designed to hold over a hundred thousand spectators, and the arena floor was built to absorb the catastrophic impacts of fully evolved Genetic Soldiers without collapsing.

Automated turrets lined the outer perimeter, and the entrance was flanked by squads of heavily armed elite soldiers who checked credentials with the cold efficiency of people who shot first and asked questions later.

Micah and Tasha entered through the competitor’s tunnel, a long, wide corridor that led from the surface to the underground waiting chambers.

The walls were lined with screens displaying tournament brackets, competitor profiles, and sponsorship logos.

The waiting chamber was massive. It was a reinforced underground hall the size of a football field, filled with rows of benches, equipment racks, and tactical terminals.

The ceiling was low and lined with steel beams, and the air was thick with the combined Flux output of every competitor in the room.

The competitors were not recruits.

They were all battle-hardened veterans. Men and women who had spent years on the border or in corporate private armies.

Their bodies were marked with old wounds, cybernetic enhancements, and Flux-infused tattoos that glowed with dense, concentrated energy.

The auras they radiated were intense and suffocating, and the combined pressure of dozens of high-level soldiers in one room made the atmosphere choke and hard to breathe.

Several of them looked up when Micah and Tasha entered. The looks they gave were not friendly.

They were the looks of predators assessing fresh meat, cold and evaluative.

Micah was completely unfazed. The Phantom Carapace was hidden beneath his civilian clothes, and the Cloak of Dela was draped over his shoulders.

The cloak masked his thermal and kinetic signatures completely, making his Flux output read as barely above baseline.

To anyone scanning him, he looked like an ordinary soldier with barely enough energy to qualify for the tournament.

Nobody in the room knew what was sitting underneath that cloak.

They registered at the main tactical terminal near the center of the chamber. The registration process was simple.

Name, rank, sector assignment, and confirmed combat record.

Micah’s profile came up clean. Squad Leader Micah Selman, Outpost 7, Sector 4 patrol commander, Alpha-class beast kill confirmed.

While Tasha handled the paperwork, Micah glanced up at the observation boxes that towered above the arena floor.

The boxes were heavily shielded with reinforced glass and Flux barriers, designed to protect the VIP spectators from the devastation that would happen on the arena floor below.

The boxes were already filling up. Corporate executives, military officials, and noble family representatives were settling into their seats, their faces visible through the tinted glass.

Micah’s enhanced vision picked out the logos on the boxes easily.

There were dozens of corporate sponsors represented, but one stood out above the rest. A black-glass observation box with a familiar logo embossed on its surface in silver.

The Clara Group.

The same pharmaceutical conglomerate that had purchased his Liquid Flux Condenser at auction for one hundred million credits was sitting in the VIP section of the Elite Tournament, scouting for new talent.

They weren’t here to watch the fights. They were here to recruit. The tournament was a hunting ground for corporate sponsors looking to add powerful soldiers to their private armies, and the Clara Group had the deepest pockets of anyone in the building.

Micah allowed himself a small smile beneath the Cloak of Dela’s hood.

The corporate elites had no idea that the masked stranger who had sold them the condenser was standing on the arena floor, preparing to compete in the same tournament they were scouting.

The holographic bracket materialized above the waiting chamber.

A three-dimensional display that hung in the air above the competitors’ heads, glowing bright blue against the steel ceiling.

Every competitor’s name was listed on the bracket, organized into rings and match times, with first-round pairings displayed in bold text.

Tasha scanned the board immediately. Her eyes moved across the names with the rapid, systematic focus of someone who had been preparing intelligence briefings since she boarded the shuttle.

She checked every name, every rank, every known ability that the tournament database had on file.

Then she found Micah’s name.

RING 7. FIRST ROUND.

MICAH SELMAN vs. VARGAS.

She tapped the name, and Vargas’s profile loaded on her comm-pad. Her eyes widened as she read through the statistics, and the color drained from her face.

"Squad Leader," she said, turning to Micah. Her voice was calm but urgent. "You need to see this."

Micah walked over and looked at the profile.

VARGAS.

Flux Rating: 15% (Genetic Soldier tier).

Combat Record: 47 wins, 3 losses. All wins by knockout or incapacitation within 90 seconds.

Cybernetic Enhancements: Full left-side body replacement. Military-grade hydraulic limbs. Integrated plasma cannon in left forearm. Reinforced titanium skeletal plating. Optical targeting system with predictive trajectory calculation.

Sponsorship: Clara Group.

Tasha looked at Micah. Her eyes carried genuine concern, the kind of concern that came from reading the combat record of a man who had been genetically and technologically modified to kill people exactly like Micah.

"He’s sponsored by the Clara Group," she said.

"A fully cybernetic Genetic Soldier with forty-seven tournament wins and a plasma cannon built into his arm. This isn’t a tournament match. This is a corporate execution."

She paused, then added, "The Clara Group probably specifically requested this matchup. They have the influence to manipulate the bracket, and putting their champion against an unknown recruit in the first round is exactly the kind of statement they like to make."

Micah looked at the profile for another moment, then closed it.
