Chapter 307 Seeking Refuge
Chapter 307 Seeking Refuge
“Here, you can have this,” Selene said decisively, immediately beginning to remove the Second Order armor she was wearing.
Yara’s eyes widened in alarm. “No, I can’t take your protection! What about your safety?”
“Just take it! We don’t have time to argue about this,” Selene insisted firmly. “Don’t worry about me—I’ll be fine. I’ve been surviving in my assigned location for some time now. I know the territory’s dangers and safe zones well.”
She sighed with obvious annoyance, “Besides, this is my fault. I should have purchased your equipment before your evolution, but I thought it would be better to buy more specialized gear after understanding what kind of abilities your evolution had provided you.”
Yara looked at Moon uncertainly, seeking guidance from someone she trusted.
“Just listen to Selene and accept the armor. She knows more about the Second Sanctuary than the both of us, it’s only wise to listen to her.”
Yara bit her lower lip with obvious reluctance before accepting the protective equipment and beginning to put it on, clearly uncomfortable about taking Selene’s defense but recognizing the necessity of the situation.
The armor adjusted to fit her frame as they prepared to enter the portal system and seek refuge in the Sanctuaries, where the immediate threats might be more manageable than the chaos currently consuming Earth.
The portal that Yara had pointed toward was a First Sanctuary entrance. The group quickly decided to head there, drop Moon off safely, then Selene and Yara would continue to the nearest Second Sanctuary portal available.
They rushed through the chaotic streets, pushing past crowds of panicked civilians. The attacks had created massive congestion as people either fled in terror or sought hiding places from the violence.
When they finally reached the portal facility, the group immediately stopped in horror at the carnage before them.
Tens, perhaps hundreds of awakener corpses littered the ground around the entrance. Bodies lay scattered in grotesque positions, their equipment and weapons either destroyed or looted by whoever had massacred them.
Moon’s eyes rapidly scanned their surroundings, searching for the perpetrators, but he detected no immediate threats—
WHOOSH!
Without warning, an arrow materialized from seemingly nowhere, streaking through the air directly toward Moon’s head with terrifying speed.
“Careful!” Selene shouted, spotting the arrow before her team could.
Selene immediately raised an earthen shield in an attempt to intercept the fast approaching arrow.
Moon’s heart hammered as he activated [Air Step] to dodge, but the attack was too fast.
The arrow tore through Selene’s hastily constructed barrier, cracking and fragmenting under the tremendous force, though the shield managed to slow the arrow down.
“Move!” Selene screamed, realizing they were facing an opponent far more dangerous than the earlier threats.
Moon and Yara threw themselves sideways, the arrow missing them by mere inches as it broke through a stone wall behind them, leaving a massive gap in its wake.
Had Selene’s defensive wall not absorbed most of the projectile’s momentum, one of them would almost certainly have died from the surprise attack.
Moon’s blood ran cold as he realized he’d nearly lost his life to an Evolver he hadn’t even sensed in the vicinity. ‘This opponent is significantly stronger than the one I killed earlier. How many acupoints does he have opened?’
From behind a pile of debris, the archer finally revealed himself. His bow remained lowered but ready, another arrow already nocked and prepared to release a moment’s notice.
“You managed to survive my Fast Shot,” the figure observed them with cold eyes, “Well done. You’re clearly stronger than your appearance suggests.”
Moon, Selene, and Yara held tense defensive stances, unable to look away from the archer as he slowly raised his bow with a confident expression on his face.
“Let’s see if you can dodge another one,” He said, coldly. He drew back the string and fired—
Whoosh!
The arrow tore through the air like a missile, charging toward the team at a tremendous speed.
Whoosh!
Another arrow was suddenly shot, this time it was from Yara’s position—she had fired her own arrow in an attempt to intercept the incoming attack. Despite Yara’s arrow having impressive speed and accuracy, hers was completely overpowered as it clashed with the Evolver’s arrow.
The arrow shattered through Yara’s defensive shot and continued its trajectory without any loss of momentum.
Selene immediately cast a wind barrier spell, channeling her mana into deflecting the attack. Her wind barrier managed to alter the arrow’s path just enough to send it careening harmlessly past them.
Before they sigh in relief that the first arrow had been successfully deflected, another arrow was already in flight.
With some experience gained in dealing with the previous two arrows, the group barely managed to avoid the third arrow, diving and rolling across the debris-covered ground as the deadly missile embedded itself in a far away building as it tore through several walls.
Thankfully, nobody from the public was hurt from the stray arrow.
Looking at the Evolver that was once again drawing his bowstring to fire another arrow towards them, Moon instantly realized they were in severe trouble. Yara and Selene were both struggling against a single Evolver, and despite his recent victory, he could barely contribute meaningfully to their defense against such a powerful opponent and under these conditions.
The archer’s rate of fire was too fast, his accuracy too precise, and his power too overwhelming to be simply blocked. Moon’s mind raced through his available options. Only his [Lightning Raiju] possessed enough speed and flexibility to potentially create an opening that his team needed to build up some momentum, and to break the archer’s rhythm.
But using his most powerful ability would drain a significant portion of his mana reserves, and if it failed to create the opening they needed, he would have personally placed one foot in his grave.
The archer was already drawing another arrow.
Moon had seconds to decide whether to gamble everything on a single decisive strike or attempt to find another solution to their dire situation.
The choice would most likely determine whether his team survived the next few moments or whether they became a speck of human history.
