Chapter 303 Fighting The Evolver
Chapter 303 Fighting The Evolver
With the Evolver blocking his escape route, Moon cursed internally despite maintaining a perfectly calm expression outwardly. He couldn’t show his nervousness, he would be devoured almost instantly, if he did.
Moon found himself in a life-threatening predicament that required every possible advantage to be deployed, and every weakness of the enemy to be exploited.
Awakeners were never meant to fight Evolvers, it was akin to a toddler fighting a teenager, it was simply bizarre.
“You’re that kid from the S-rank gate, aren’t you? Kek, why don’t you show me the power of an S-rank awakener,” the man chuckled with amusement before summoning his weapon.
A sharp, gleaming spear appeared in the Evolver’s grip.
‘He’s a spearman,’ Moon noted immediately, gauging the best engagement distances.
Moon leapt backward, creating significantly more space between himself and the Evolver. He had been standing within the spear’s optimal striking range—exactly where fighting a spear wielder was most dangerous for any opponent.
The spear’s primary advantage lay in its long reach combined with incredible thrusting speed and penetrating power. At mid-range, it was exceptionally difficult to counter or defend against properly executed spear techniques, not to mention one executed by an Evolver.
Upon sighting the spear, Moon immediately dismissed any thoughts of using his sword in this engagement. A spear could thrust faster than any sword could close distance, giving the wielder the overwhelming advantage in most combat scenarios.
He had two viable options: either close the distance to arm’s length where spear usage became awkward and inefficient, or create maximum distance and rely on his magical power.
Moon chose long-range combat without hesitation. His dagger skills, while decent, weren’t sufficiently developed for close-quarters engagement with an Evolver-level opponent. The person he was fighting was stronger than any S-Rank beast could ever be—he couldn’t afford even the slightest carelessness or miscalculation when fighting him.
Lightning began crackling around his hands as Moon prepared for what would likely be one of the most challenging fight of his life. Every advantage he could create through positioning, timing and environment would be essential to his survival.
His enormous number of lives could no longer help him. He had once chance, and one only.
The gap between Awakener and Evolver couldn’t be quantified—it represented a difference in power that few people ever managed to overcome through skill alone.
But Moon had no choice except to try.
Moon summoned water and fire simultaneously in both hands, the opposing elements resting in each palm.
Observing his preparation, the Evolver chuckled with obvious contempt. “You really think you can deal with me? A mere awakener against an Evolver like me?”
His light chuckle slowly turned into maniacal laughter as he spread his arms wide in a gesture of complete confidence, practically inviting the attack, “Go ahead then! Hit me with everything you’ve got!”
Moon released both elemental attacks at once—but not toward his opponent as the Evolver had expected.
Instead, he directed fire and water directly against each other in the space between them. A massive cloud of mist erupted instantly, creating an impenetrable wall of vapor that completely obscured vision in both directions.
Simultaneously, Moon sprinted in an entirely different direction, lightning crackling around his legs as he pushed his body to the absolute limits.
“Oh? You think you can actually run away from me?” came the Evolver’s voice from within the mist.
The sound of pursuit began immediately—footsteps that struck pavement with enough force to crack stone.
Moon had already separated himself by nearly a hundred meters using his speed and head start advantage, yet somehow the Evolver was closing the distance at an alarming rate that no awakener could ever hope of reaching.
Realising that the Evolver was going to catch up very soon, Moon retrieved a prepared rune from his storage and hurled it back toward his pursuer’s approximate location.
Mid-flight, the inscription activated with a blinding light.
Brilliant white light erupted from the rune before basking the entire street in its radiance. The civilians that were running for their lives in the area were stunned, losing balance as they immediately fell to the floor, their eyes bleeding.
The awakeners shielded their eyes completely. As for the Evolver, he merely had to squint till his eyes were like a thin slit that he could barely see in.
The overwhelming light bought Moon an extra precious second, allowing him to widen the gap between them fractionally.
Unfortunately, whatever advantage the flash had provided proved temporary. The steady sound of approaching footsteps resumed almost immediately, and Moon could sense his pursuer adapting to continue the chase despite the visual disruption.
Each second that passed brought the Evolver closer to striking range, and Moon’s impressive speed—impressive as it was—couldn’t match the speed of his opponent.
The gap was narrowing, and Moon’s options were diminishing rapidly.
He needed something more than simple evasion if he wanted to survive the next few minutes.
In less than a minute, the Evolver had closed the distance to only ten meters—well within striking range for someone of his capabilities.
“Got you!” he declared triumphantly.
A spear suddenly materialized in his grip, already positioned perfectly for a piercing throw that would stab Moon before he could react or defend himself.
Catching sight of the weapon from the corner of his eye, Moon’s heart skipped a beat as adrenaline flooded his system. ‘Shit!’
Without hesitation, Moon spun his entire body toward his pursuer and released the Lightning Raiju he’d been carefully charging while running—pouring a large amount of mana into the skill to maximize its power and speed.
‘That’s a dangerous attack!’ The Evolver’s eyes flashed as he immediately halted his spear throw and dodged sideways to avoid the incoming lightning wolf that flashed before his eyes.
The Raiju streaked past him, missing its target by mere inches.
Moon’s eyes widened before he immediately resumed his desperate flight.
The Evolver’s confidence returned as he saw the worry cloud Moon’s expression, he pursued without delay, “Kid, you’re stronger than I initially expected. That attack could have actually inju—”
Before the Evolver could complete his sentence, the Lightning Raiju struck him squarely in the back.
