SSS Awakening: Conquering Worlds with My Cupid System
Chapter 265: SSS-Rank? Fear and Death are Beyond That
The blade sank into the pool of blood.
There was no resistance. No stone, no earth, no solid foundation beneath the surface. Just a deep, sickening suction, as if the puddle had suddenly transformed into the gullet of a colossal, starving beast.
The world was violently torn away.
The suffocating smell of copper, the sight of Chloe pinned beneath the descending wooden pikes, the muffled screams of his teammates, the blinding pink light of his own desperate aura... all of it shattered like thin glass beneath a hammer.
Then, Silas fell.
He plunged through reality itself, plummeting down an endless, vertical throat of absolute, crushing stillness. The drop lasted a second; it lasted ten thousand years. When his boots finally slammed against a ground that felt like frozen meat, the impact didn’t shatter his bones, but rather it shattered his perception.
Silas staggered, clutching his head as his vision violently reoriented itself.
"Chloe?" he gasped out, his breath rising in a thick, gray plume of frost. "Alpha...?"
Silence. A silence so heavy, so dense, that it pressed against his eardrums like physical weight. He raised his eyes, and for the first time in his life, Silas stopped breathing out of pure, unadulterated terror.
He was no longer in the tower. He was no longer on Earth.
He stood upon an infinite, flat expanse of pale, calcified bone that stretched outward into a horizonless void. The sky above was a swirling, bruised mass of dead, stagnant color, a sickly, bruised purple and bile-yellow that bled into a sky that possessed no stars, no sun, and no end.
Floating directly above him, suspended in the abyssal atmosphere, were millions, perhaps billions, of colossal, grotesque structures. They looked like the fossilized internal organs of ancient, cosmic monstrosities, interconnected by pulsing, translucent veins the size of mountain ranges.
Black liquid, thick and sludge-like, rained down from these floating gargantuans, splashing silently onto the ocean of bone beneath his feet. Every square inch of this reality bled an atmosphere so fundamentally wrong, so thoroughly hostile to existence itself, that the very concept of human life felt like a brief, trivial mistake.
Silas checked his System.
The familiar, reassuring pink window didn’t appear. Instead, his vision was flooded with distorted, frantic static. The text flickered violently, scrambling over itself like dying insects:
[ERR0R: LOCATION UNKN0WN]
[USER STATUS: SSS-RANK]
[WARNING: STATISTICAL CLASSIFICATION IS MEANINGLESS IN THIS DOMAIN]
[WARNING: SSS-RANK POWER OUTPUT... 0.00001% RELEVANCE]
[WARNING: THREAT LEVEL... BEYOND COMPREHENSION]
A bitter, hysterical laugh tried to rise in Silas’s chest, but it died before it reached his lips; SSS-Rank. The pinnacle of human awakening was S-Rank. The title that made academies bow, that turned teenagers into god-like champions, that allowed him to kick A-Rank monsters around like soccer balls and shatter illusion domains with a flick of his wrist.
Here, in this place, S-Rank was a joke, and even his true rank, SSS-Rank was worthless here. It was like a child’s plastic sword brought to face the heat of a collapsing star. It was a pathetic, artificial label created by humans who had looked up at the night sky and believed they understood the darkness.
This place did not care about ranks. It did not care about stats, or mana pools, or human potential. This was the realm of true, primordial origin. A place where Fear and Death were not concepts, but the very air, the ground, and the physics that held the nightmare together.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
The sound echoed across the infinite plain of bone.
It was quiet and almost gentle, yet it hit Silas’s soul like a battering ram. He turned slowly, his hands trembling so violently that he almost dropped the dagger. His pink hair hung completely limp. The iridescent, arrogant aura he had summoned moments ago was gone, swallowed effortlessly by the oppressive gloom.
A figure was walking toward him. It didn’t leap, and it didn’t rush. It merely took one step at a time, traversing miles of bone with every lazy stride.
Swef Ashi.
Up close, the monster was even more terrifying than the vision had shown. His black skin seemed to absorb the sickly light of the sky, making his silhouette look like a jagged hole cut into reality. The crimson tattoos etched across his towering frame pulsed with a slow, sickening rhythm, resembling exposed, bleeding arteries.
Blood-red hair flowed behind him like a river of gore, and beneath his chin, two jagged ivory tusks gleamed with fresh, black slime.
When Swef stopped ten paces away, the temperature around Silas plummeted into absolute zero.
The Astoria leader did not look at Silas with hatred. He did not look at him with anger, or hunger, or rivalry. He looked at Silas the way a man looks at an ant that has somehow crawled onto his dinner plate: with a mixture of mild irritation and clinical detachment.
"So," Swef’s voice echoed directly inside the marrow of Silas’s bones. It was a sound like grinding tectonic plates and crushing skulls. "The anomaly arrives."
Silas tried to raise his dagger, but his arm refused to move. The sheer density of Swef’s presence, the concentrated malice of a race that had consumed entire civilizations, paralyzed his nervous system.
His Fate Thread Vision involuntarily forced itself open, and what Silas saw made him vomit.
There were no individual threads around Swef. There was no fate to manipulate, no web to pluck. Swef Ashi was the center of a monstrous, writhing black hole of tangled, rotting tendrils that devoured every line of probability that came near it.
Millions of screaming souls, calcified remains of devoured worlds, and suffocating miasma spun around the monster, choking out any possibility of a victorious future.
There was no outcome where Silas won. There was no trick, no system loop-hole, no clever quip that could alter this trajectory.
I’m going to die here, Silas realized.
The thought wasn’t angry; it was cold and absolute. The gap wasn’t a mountain he could climb... it was an ocean he was drowning in.
Swef looked down at the dagger in Silas’s hand, then raised his crimson eyes to meet Silas’s wide, terrified pink ones. A slow, terrifying grin stretched across the Astoria’s monstrous face, revealing rows of razor-sharp, overlapping teeth.
"You possess a piece of something ancient, little human," Swef whispered, taking a single step closer. The pressure expanded, forcing Silas down onto his knees with a sickening crack as the bone floor gave way beneath him.
"You think yourself a god among your kind. But here... beneath the skin of the world... you are merely the key to our gate."
Swef reached out a massive, clawed hand toward Silas’s face.
"Now... open it for me."
