SSS Awakening: Conquering Worlds with My Cupid System
Chapter 264: A Danger he took Lightly
The air in the illusion-shattered forest turned slick and warm.
Silas led the team, his fingers dancing across a web of neon-pink fate threads that hummed like plucked guitar strings. His initial confident swagger hadn’t faded, but the sudden pivot from reaching the sanctum to obliterating a massive dimensional gateway had left the rest of Valecrest Academy in a state of suspended panic.
"Keep up," Silas called out, stepping over a moss-covered root. "The threads are thin here. Whatever’s down there is drawing power from the foundation, which means the structural integrity near the root level is..."
He stopped mid-sentence as the pink thread stretched between his index finger and the trunk of a massive black oak snapped with a sharp, metallic ping.
Then, reality buckled.
It didn’t start with a sound or a visible threat. It started with an absolute, suffocating weight.
A wave of pure, unadulterated bloodlust, denser than liquid lead, and colder than deep space, erupted from the soil under their boots. It wasn’t a technique; it was an atmosphere. The sheer, predatory malice of a thousand starved beasts condensed into a single physical wave.
Neil didn’t even have time to shout. The moment the wave hit, his knees cracked against the earth. He vomited violently, clutching his head as his vision turned entirely white from shock.
"Get... down..." Damien choked out, but he was already falling. His hands slammed into the mud, his arms trembling violently as he tried to keep his chest off the ground. Beside him, Peter, Salmoa, Victor, and the rest of the substitutes collapsed instantly, pinned like insects under a microscope.
Even Alpha, whose sheer willpower usually bordered on the unnatural, stumbled back three paces. His teeth ground together so hard a line of red trickled down his chin. He dropped to one knee, a gauntleted fist cratering the dirt as he fought to keep his head raised.
Chloe dropped to both knees, gasping for air that felt like liquid glass in her lungs.
Silas stood alone, but his legs were shaking. His pink hair hung limp, dampened by a sudden, heavy cold sweat. His Fate Thread Vision exploded into a blinding screen of jagged, screaming crimson lines.
I miscalculated, Silas thought, his throat dry as bone. The system warned me, and I took it lightly.
He had assumed the tower’s defense mechanism was just another system puzzle, another set of rules to break, or another boss to kick around. He hadn’t accounted for the ancient, sentient rot breathing right beneath his feet.
The forest itself began to recoil from their presence.
The soft, dark soil beneath them suddenly liquefied. It didn’t melt into mud, but rather, it dissolved into a thick, coppery pool of bubbling, boiling blood. The stench was immediate and nauseating, filling the air with the smell of old iron and open guts.
Neil sank to his waist almost instantly, his muffled screams swallowed by the viscous red liquid.
"Neil!" Chloe reached out, but the trees around them responded to the bloodlust.
The ancient, black-barked trunks twisted with sickening groans, their branches whipping downward, stripping themselves of leaves until they became razor-sharp wooden pikes. The surrounding canopy locked together, blocking out what little light remained, transforming the grove into an iron maiden of descending, impaling stakes.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
The wooden pikes plunged into the pool of blood, missing Damien’s ribs by mere inches and pinning his coat to the submerged ground.
"Silas!" Alpha spat out blood, his crimson-encased fist trembling as he tried to raise a camouflage barrier, a skill he’d learned thanks to the system’s relentless training, but the environmental suppression was too high; his mana sputtered out like a dying candle. "We can’t... channel...!"
Silas stared at his own hands. The pink threads were disintegrating the second he tried to weave them. The tower wasn’t just attacking them... it was denying their fundamental right to use energy. It was altering the local physical laws, reducing elite academy students to helpless meat waiting for the meat grinder. Or so he thought, until the system’s warning came, making him realize the hard truth.
[WARNING: SYSTEM SUPPRESSION AT 88%]
[ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARD: ASTORIA BLOOD DOMAIN]
[USER THREADS UNSTABLE]
For the first time since he had set foot in the competition, Silas felt a cold, sharp spike in the back of his mind.
Fear.
Not a crippling horror, but a sharp, biting clarity. He looked back and saw Chloe struggling to keep her head above the rising tide of dark blood, a massive jagged pike descending directly toward her spine, moving with deliberate, cruel slowness.
[Primary Priority: Chloe Montreal.]
The system’s words flashed in red behind his eyelids.
"Don’t you dare," Silas whispered.
He forced his leg forward. Moving through the blood felt like wading through wet concrete. Every muscle in his body burned as if set on fire by the environmental pressure. The sheer weight of the Astoria bloodlust slammed into his skull, trying to force his knees to the dirt, trying to make him bow.
"I said..." Silas planted his forward foot, shattering the stone beneath the blood. "Don’t... touch... her!"
He didn’t use a subtle thread. He didn’t use a clever trick.
Silas reached into his own core, ignoring the screaming warnings of his system, and ripped at the mysterious, dormant presence deep within his soul... the strange, ancient power the tower had recognized earlier.
A blinding spike of bright, iridescent pink light erupted from his body, clashing violently against the sea of crimson bloodlust.
The descending wooden pikes froze inches above Chloe’s back.
The pool of blood rippled violently, pushed outward by an absolute, arrogant force that refused to be suppressed. Silas raised his Saber-tooth Wolf Fang dagger, his eyes glowing with an unhinged, dangerous light as he stared straight down into the bloody floor, straight into the subterranean darkness where Swef Ashi watched.
"You want a monster?" Silas’s voice cracked through the suffocating pressure, carrying a wild, terrifying edge. "I’ll give you one!"
He slammed the dagger straight down into the pool of blood.
