Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Chapter 88: The Obsession Burns

"For now. They need to build capital, establish legitimacy, prove themselves to the Volkovs." Dimitri closed the laptop. "In a year, maybe two, they’ll test the limits. But by then, they’ll have too much to lose. They’ll negotiate instead of fighting."

"You’re giving them a future."

"I’m giving them a leash that feels like freedom." Dimitri looked out at the city. "Enzo’s my brother. I don’t want to kill him. And Isabella...she’s dangerous, but she’s not inherently evil. They just need direction. Purpose. Something that’s theirs."

"And if they don’t stay in their lane?"

"Then I’ll remind them why I’m called the Devil." Dimitri’s voice was absolute. "But I’d prefer not to. Killing family is messy. This way, everyone gets what they want. They get independence. I get peace. Antonio and Lorenzo get their children out of direct competition with me."

"And Eve gets to keep her hands clean."

Dimitri smiled. "That too."

His phone rang. Eve.

"How did it go?" she asked immediately.

"Exactly as planned. They took the bait. I crashed their party. Offered them the territories. They accepted."

"So it worked? The third option?"

"Perfectly. You were right, cara mia. Giving them a way to win without me losing, that was the key." He could hear the smile in her voice. "I’m starting to think you’re better at this than I am."

"I’m not better. I just see people differently than you do. You see soldiers and enemies. I see wounded children who need direction."

"That’s why we’re partners."

"Exactly." She paused. "Are you coming home?"

"In an hour. I need to debrief with Mike, make sure the contracts are ready for morning."

"Okay. I’ll be waiting. And Dimitri?"

"Yes?"

"I’m proud of you. For choosing strategy over violence. For giving them a chance."

His chest tightened. "Thank you."

"I love you."

"I love you too."

He ended the call, looked at Marco.

"Take me to Mike’s. Then home."

"Yes, boss."

As they drove through the city, Dimitri allowed himself a moment of satisfaction.

He’d neutralized the threat without starting a war.

He’d given Enzo and Isabella what they wanted...independence while maintaining control.

And he’d proven, once again, that being the Devil meant thinking three moves ahead.

But more than that—

He’d proven Eve right.

That there was always a third option.

Always a way where everyone could win.

And as he drove through his city, his empire, built on blood and fear and absolute control, Dimitri realized something.

Eve hadn’t just saved his life when she’d walked into Sinners eight weeks ago.

She’d saved his soul.

And for that, he’d give her anything.

Even mercy for his enemies.

POV: ISABELLA

Hours later, Isabella stood on her hotel balcony, watching the city lights.

The Hartford shipment was secured. Inventory confirmed. Distribution scheduled.

Their first successful operation.

But it felt hollow.

Because Dimitri had let them have it. Had watched them succeed, then reminded them who really controlled the board.

Her phone buzzed. Alexei Volkov.

I assume Dimitri contacted you about the clause.

She typed back: He did. And threatened us in person.

Good. Then you understand the terms. Operate within boundaries, I support you. Cross them, you’re on your own.

Understood.

Excellent. Your Hartford success was noted. The Volkov family looks forward to a profitable partnership. Within limits.

Isabella set down her phone, closed her eyes.

This was what independence looked like in their world.

Not freedom. Just a different kind of cage.

But...

She looked at the city sprawling below her.

It was still more than she’d had before.

More than being Antonio’s pawn or Dimitri’s discarded fiancée.

She was building something. With Enzo. On her own terms.

Even if those terms had Dimitri-shaped boundaries.

"You okay?" Enzo’s voice came from the doorway.

"I will be." She turned to face him. "We did it, Enzo. Hartford was ours. And the territories Dimitri offered....they’re real. We can build there."

"We will build there." He joined her at the railing. "And someday, when we’re strong enough, when we’ve proven ourselves..."

"We’ll expand," Isabella finished. "Carefully. Strategically. But we’ll expand."

"Exactly."

They stood in silence, two wounded children who’d decided to stop playing by their fathers’ rules and start writing their own.

Even if the Devil had final edit approval.

For now.

***

Isabella stood on her hotel balcony long after Enzo left, staring at the city lights but seeing only one thing.

Dimitri.

Standing on that warehouse catwalk like a king surveying his kingdom. Slow clapping. Completely alone. Unarmed. Utterly confident that none of them would touch him.

Because they couldn’t.

Because he was Dimitri fucking Valentino.

And God help her, she’d never wanted him more.

Fourteen years she’d spent preparing to be his wife. Fourteen years of training, languages, combat skills, strategy lessons. Molding herself into the perfect mafia queen.

And he’d chosen some nobody. Some divorced talent agent who’d stumbled into his club at the right moment.

Isabella’s hands clenched on the railing.

She’d told Enzo she was accepting Dimitri’s offer. That they’d build their empire within his boundaries. That she was done fighting for a man who’d never choose her.

She’d lied.

Because watching Dimitri tonight, seeing that power, that control, that absolute dominance had done something to her.

It hadn’t extinguished her obsession.

It had set it on fire.

Her phone rang. She glanced at the screen.

Lorenzo Russo. Her father.

Isabella’s stomach clenched, but she answered.

"Padre."

"Isabella." Lorenzo’s voice was ice. "I just received a very interesting report. You accepted Dimitri’s offer. Agreed to operate within boundaries he set. Partnered with Antonio’s disappointment of a son to build something in neutral territories."

"Yes."

"And you think this is acceptable?"

"I think it’s strategic...."

"I think it’s FAILURE." Lorenzo’s voice cracked like a whip. "You were sent to that city with one job, Isabella. ONE. Secure Dimitri Valentino. Marry him. Unite our families. Instead, you’ve allowed some American whore to steal what belongs to you, and now you’re playing house with Enzo Valentino like some common..."

"I’m building an empire," Isabella interrupted, her voice steady despite her racing heart. "An independent organization that will rival..."

"RIVAL?" Lorenzo laughed....harsh and mocking. "You think taking scraps from Dimitri’s table makes you his rival? You’re a joke, Isabella. A disappointment. Just like your mother said you’d be."
