Six Months Contract With The Mafia God
Chapter 424: How Long Can Isabella Last Without This Medication?
"No," Luca said. "It’s too sophisticated. Too hidden. Whoever created this went to extreme lengths to ensure it couldn’t be traced. The pharmaceutical knowledge required, the resources needed....it’s professional work."
"Then narrow it down," Dante commanded. "Who could create something like this?"
Luca took a breath.
"Boss," he said slowly, "there are only two organizations I know of that could create something this complex."
"Tell me," Dante said.
Luca hesitated for just a moment. He knew what he was about to say carried serious weight.
"The first is The Covenant," Luca said.
There was a pause on the other end of the line.
"The second," Luca continued, "is Prometheus Laboratories."
"Prometheus Laboratories?" Dante said, and there was something in his tone that suggested he’d heard the name but didn’t know much about it.
"Yes, boss," Luca said. "They’re very mysterious. They don’t announce themselves like The Covenant does. But they’re powerful. Possibly on par with The Covenant in terms of capability and resources."
"Why am I just hearing about them?" Dante asked, and the question was sharp.
"Because they operate completely differently than The Covenant," Luca explained. "The Covenant makes itself known. They use intimidation. They operate openly within criminal networks, making themselves felt everywhere. Prometheus Laboratories operates in complete secrecy."
"How complete?" Dante asked.
"Almost no one knows they exist," Luca said. "No one knows where they’re located. No one knows who runs them. They’re a ghost organization. They create sophisticated pharmaceuticals and compounds. They keep it all hidden. They don’t demand respect through fear, they demand it through the absolute secrecy of their operations."
"And you’re saying they could have created this compound?"
"Absolutely," Luca said. "They have the resources, the knowledge, the laboratories. This kind of work...creating a dual-layer pill that appears to be one thing but is actually another, this is exactly the kind of thing an organization like Prometheus Laboratories would be capable of."
Dante was silent for a long moment.
"What about The Covenant?" Dante asked. "Could they have done this?"
"Possible," Luca said. "But less likely. The Covenant tends toward obvious brutality. They don’t hide their work. Whoever did this wanted it hidden. They wanted it to appear legitimate. That suggests someone who operates in secrecy. Which suggests Prometheus Laboratories more than The Covenant."
"How long can Isabella last without this medication?" Dante asked, and his voice was absolutely controlled but carrying an undertone of something dark.
"The withdrawal symptoms will escalate," Luca said. "What she’s experiencing now is day two. By day four or five, she’ll be in serious physical distress. If she goes too long without it, there could be medical complications. Seizures. Cardiac issues. Psychological breakdown."
"How long?" Dante pressed.
"Maybe a week," Luca said. "Maybe less, depending on how dependent her body has become. If she’s been taking this for years like you suspect, her body is probably very dependent."
"Then we need to find a source," Dante said. "Fast."
"The only way to trace it is to find out where her supply comes from," Luca said. "Who prescribes it. Who delivers it. Someone in her regular life is providing it to her. A doctor, a pharmacy, a contact. We find that person and we find the origin."
"I’ll ask her," Dante said. "She’ll know. She’s been getting monthly deliveries or pickups for years. She’ll know where it comes from."
He paused, then continued: "In the meantime, I want everything on Prometheus Laboratories. Everything you can find. Who they are. Where they’re located. What they do. Who runs them. How powerful they actually are. Everything."
"Understood, boss," Luca said. "I’m on it. Give me 48 hours for a full report."
"You have 48 hours," Dante confirmed.
The call ended.

Dante sat in the study of the coastal villa, holding his phone, processing what he’d just learned.
Someone had been poisoning Isabella for eight years.
Not obviously. Not violently. But systematically, methodically, through medication that was supposed to help her.
The genius of it was the masking. The anxiety medication on the surface of the pill. The way it would fool anyone doing a basic test. The way Isabella herself would never suspect that her "anxiety medication" was actually something far more sinister.
And Dante understood the implication: whoever had done this knew exactly what they were doing. They had resources. They had knowledge. They had the capability to create something this sophisticated and hide it so completely.
The Covenant was one possibility.
But Prometheus Laboratories, an organization Dante had never even heard of despite his position in Rome’s underworld, was another.
An organization so secret that even someone as powerful as Dante didn’t know about them.
An organization sophisticated enough to create a dual-layer pharmaceutical compound designed to appear legitimate while being fundamentally addictive.
Dante stood and looked out the window at the Mediterranean.
Isabella had escaped her father’s house.
But she hadn’t escaped the cage that had been built inside her body, cell by cell, through eight years of intercepted medication.
And the only way to truly free her was to find the source of that medication and understand who was behind it.
Then he would burn them.

POV: EVE
The sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the master bedroom, painting everything in shades of gold and amber.
Eve woke slowly, luxuriously, to the sensation of Dimitri’s arm around her. His body was warm and solid against her back, his breathing deep and even. For a moment, she just existed in that space...wrapped in him, wrapped in morning light, wrapped in the peace of being completely safe.
She turned to face him.
He was already awake, watching her with those silver-grey eyes. He didn’t smile, but there was something gentle in his expression....something that suggested he’d been awake for a while, just watching her sleep.
"Good morning," Eve said softly.
"Good morning," Dimitri responded, and he kissed her forehead, then her cheek, then her mouth...slow and intimate and filled with the kind of tenderness that made her heart ache.
