Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Chapter 231: if I don’t come back....

"Hi," Eve said softly from the doorway.

Dimitri turned immediately, and when he saw her, something in his expression shifted. The operational hardness softened into something that looked almost vulnerable.

"Hi," he said, and crossed to her in three strides.

He pulled her into his arms, and Eve went willingly, burying her face against his chest. She could feel his heartbeat....steady, but faster than usual. Could feel the tension still running through his entire body from the briefing.

"Talk to me," she whispered.

"About what?"

"About what happens tomorrow. About what you’re feeling. About... anything. Everything."

Dimitri held her tighter, his chin resting on top of her head.

"I’m scared," he said, and the admission seemed to cost him something. "Not of pain. Not of death. I’m scared that I won’t come back to you. I’m scared that I’ll walk into that facility and something will go wrong and you’ll be left wondering forever what happened to me."

Eve pulled back just enough to look at his face.

"You’re coming back," she said.

"You don’t know that."

"Yes, I do," Eve said firmly. "Because you promised me. And you keep your promises to me, Dimitri. Even when they’re hard. Especially when they’re hard."

Dimitri’s hand came up and cupped her face. His thumb traced her cheekbone gently.

"If something happens," he said, "if I don’t come back...."

"Don’t." Eve’s voice was sharp. "Don’t do that. Don’t rehearse goodbye. Don’t prepare me for a world without you. You’re coming back."

"Eve..."

"No." She was crying now, but her voice was steady. "You don’t get to give up before you’ve even started. You don’t get to think about failing. You get to come back. You get to walk out of that facility and come home to me. That’s what you’re going to do."

Dimitri pulled her against his chest again, and she felt him breathe....deep, shaky breaths like he was trying to center himself.

"Okay," he said finally. "Okay. I’m coming back."

"Promise me."

"I promise," Dimitri said. "I promise you, Eve. No matter what happens inside that facility, no matter what I have to do or become....I’m coming back to you."

They stood like that for a long time, just holding each other, both knowing that tomorrow everything would change.

***

That night they didn’t sleep much, Instead, they lay in bed together, and Dimitri told her things he’d never told anyone. About his mother. About being eight years old and understanding that the people he loved could be taken from him and there was nothing he could do to stop it. About spending his entire life building walls and acquiring power specifically so that no one could ever hurt him that way again.

About how Eve had dismantled all those walls without even trying.

"I didn’t know how to love you at first," he said in the darkness. "I knew how to want you. How to possess you. How to make sure you stayed. But love is different. Love is vulnerability. And I’ve spent my whole life avoiding vulnerability."

"And now?" Eve asked softly.

"Now I can’t imagine existing without it," Dimitri said. "Now I understand that the walls I built to protect myself were actually the things that were slowly suffocating me. You’re the first breath I’ve taken in thirty-two years."

Eve cried against his chest, and he held her through it.

When dawn came on Sunday, they were still tangled together, still not wanting to let go.

At 1:15 PM, Dimitri showered and dressed in simple, professional clothes, the kind that a consultant would wear. Black pants. Blue shirt. Neutral jacket.

He looked completely ordinary.

Which was the point.

Nonna was waiting in the living room. She pulled him down and kissed his forehead, then whispered something in rapid Italian that Dimitri understood: "You come back to her. You understand? You come back."

"I understand, Nonna," he said.

Eve walked him to the elevator.

Neither of them said much. There was nothing left to say.

"I love you," Dimitri said as the elevator doors opened.

"I love you too," Eve replied. "Come back to me."

"Always," he said.

And then the doors were closing, and she was gone.

Dimitri stood in the elevator as it descended, watching the numbers count down.....20, 19, 18, 17.

By the time it reached the ground floor, Dr. Aleksandr Volkov had completely taken over.

The man Eve loved no longer existed.

There was only Dr. Aleksandr Volkov now.

And he was going to burn The Covenant to ash.

***

The facility didn’t look like what he’d expected.

That was the first thing that struck him as he turned off the highway and followed the GPS coordinates toward the coordinates provided in the deployment packet. It didn’t look sinister. It didn’t look like a place where people were dying in cells and viruses were being weaponized.

It looked like a corporate office park.

The road was perfectly maintained, lined with trees that had been professionally landscaped. The signage at the entrance read "COVENANT RESEARCH INSTITUTE" in understated gray lettering. There was a parking lot with approximately forty vehicles scattered across the spaces....people arriving for the Sunday shift, researchers who apparently worked weekends in pursuit of unrestricted science.

The perimeter fencing was high, twelve feet at least....topped with motion sensors exactly as the schematic had indicated. But the fencing was painted dark green to blend with the surrounding woods. From a distance, it looked like it was designed to keep people out rather than keep people in.

It was designed perfectly to hide what was actually happening inside.

Dimitri turned into the visitor entrance and approached the security gate.

A guard stepped out of the gatehouse....mid-fifties, ex-military bearing, the kind of careful attention that came from years of evaluating threats. His name tag read "TORRES."

"Identification," Torres said, not unkindly.

Dimitri handed over the passport and credentials that Marco had manufactured.

Torres examined them with the thoroughness of someone who’d been trained to spot forgeries. Dimitri waited, his breathing steady, his expression pleasant. Just a consultant arriving for work. Nothing remarkable.

After two minutes that felt like twenty, Torres handed the documents back.

"Welcome to The Covenant," he said. "Dr. Elizabeth is expecting you. Park in visitor lot C and proceed to the main entrance. Security will check you in."

"Thank you," Dimitri said, and drove through.

The parking lot was exactly as he’d visualized from the schematic. He parked the rental car and sat for a moment, hands on the steering wheel, letting himself feel the reality of what he’d just done.

He was inside.

And there was no turning back now.
