Chapter 39 - Parasite?
"Me….Me infertile?"
That was the only thing that left his lips that kept pursing. His eyes turned moist.
"Yes, I shall take my leave now. Take care."
The nurse couldn't help but ignore. In her mind all that loomed was the stressful day that lied in await of her, she had so much on her hands to do.
Verona came near wondering what might have happened. She looked at the now agape Dant and the reports that were tossed on the hospital floor. Her nose wrinkled. She didn't know what those files were but she had a little bit of idea. They seemed strangely familiar. Even though she found it difficult to duck with her heels but did so anyway as she picked it up. She flipped through the pages as her eyes shot out wide. What was there to know was all in front of her eyes. Now she knew why Dant looked so shocked. After all who wouldn't be shocked after hearing such a piece of big news? She felt sorry for her man, but no matter how much she wants she can't change God's will. But she could do something else. She tossed the files to a hospital chair beside her.
*crash*
She didn't care about anything else. The only thing on her mind was worries for her Dant. Spreading her arms wide she gave him a big hug.
"Verona?"
His voice shook as he tried to figure out what was happening.
"Why is my sweetie looking so upset?" she asked. Her sugar breath collided with his cheeks making them damp.
Dant turned around to see her smiling face. The reports were lying on the chair beside.
"You saw it didn't you. I am incapable…"
"Do I look like I care?" She interrupted him in between, not letting him speak it out. For a moment, Dant didn't realize what she meant as he made a poker face. But upon figuring out what she meant, he ducked his head low. He was feeling guilty for doubting her.
"Thank you," he whispered in a soft voice. As a man, it was a fact of utter shame for him to be sterile. That is how society perceives it in his country. But if his wife stands with him maybe he would be able to face reality and live above this fact and without any shames.
"You are the best," he said. Hell, if his wife is supportive of him he doesn't even care what the world says!
Verona rolled her eyes.
"Of course, I am. You should cherish me more."
"I would. Always" Dant nodded fevoriously.
[flashback ends]
Dant's eyes turned teary upon reminiscing his promise.
"I hate being so powerless." If he had been strong he might have been able to protect Verona. But here he was just a weakling, a weakling that works on the whims of someone like Klautz.
If there is a way that he can find to save Verona, then he wants to grab on it but alas luck was not on his side. Klautz didn't seem to care and there was no one other than him who could save her.
"Please I beg of you. I want to live and I want Verona to live too. I would always be grateful if you choose to help me. Please I beg of you." Tears trickled down his eyes and he joined his hands to beg Klautz. But all KLautz did was roll his eyes.
"Fuck off. This is not my problem. You reap what you sow."
The words were like thunder to Dant's ears.
'Yes, all of this was my fault. I got greedy.'
He cried but walked back to where his friends were. Now the whole group was weeping but Dant had a different reason to weep. He glanced at Verona as if he was watching the most delicate thing on the planet and as if it would break any moment. It was as if he was giving her one last loving gaze before they are separated forever.
Verona didn't notice his gaze. Neither did anyone else. All they could do was lament on Blair's death.
KLautz watched the group as they wept.
He sighed.
"What's the point of all of this?" Being someone from the future he knew what sort of series of events were to transpire to some extent. He had for the first time truly realized how cruel the lady fortune can be. These people were lamenting for the death of someone when they themselves were about to die in an hour or two. Doesn't that seem pointless?
Klautz was about to get back to his work to ignore the group when something caught his attention. A blackish mass seemed to be wriggling out of the half eaten body. Klautz had killed many humans in his past life but never had he seen something like this.
"Can't they notice that thing?"
What Klautz found the most weird was the group's ignorance of the creature. Any sane man would react to such a creature immediately when coming out of a dead body but they didn't even move an inch and continued with their sobbing.
"Am I the only one who is seeing things?"
Klautz rubbed his eyes with his forefingers and then focused on the body again as his forehead wrinkled.
"It's still there."
Squirming left and right it made its presence. A ton of possibilities went through Klautz mind. He turned around to find the dead lying beast.
"Is it some kind of part of this beast? Maybe… but that's the only possibility that I can think of!"
It was black like the beast but translucent. And unlike the dog type beast which was ferocious and hungry it squirmed like a child. Neither did they have much differences nor much of any similarities. But there was nothing else that came to Klautz's mind. It was a variable that he never knew of!
