Chapter 38 - Barren
Klautz's unfazed attitude came off as a bolt of lightning to Dant. He wept to buy his pity.
"Can't you make it two somehow?" He cried.
But alas none of his tricks worked on the Klautz who was more concerned with the toughness of the meat rather than on the worried Dant.
"Two? I can't"
"But… but Verona she's my wife! How can I let her die?"
'What?' Klautz shouted out in his head yet having the same poker face. 'That came out of nowhere!'
His brows furrowed more and more. He hadn't considered something like this. After all, someone being summoned together with their family is such a rarity! Every year hundreds of participants are being summoned to Hell and they are all divided into different groups at the different safe zones. As such how much of a miracle would have been to be summoned with one's own family member? That is why Klautz had never considered that possibility. All he had ever thought of was saving one member of the group.
"Your wife? I see... Not my problem though. I don't care." Klautz said. He did feel sorry for him but how can he help it? Both he and his wife were gonna die in this trial together. But, Dant instead wanted to save himself and as such had approached Klautz.
"Is there no middle ground?"
"Yes, there is." Klautz nodded, "If you are willing to die yourself in place of your wife, I promise to do my best to keep her alive and get her out of this trial." Klautz didn't care who lives and dies at the end. His goal was the same from the beginning. And after working as a ninja for so many years he had a habit to stick to his goals. Not to mention trying to save both of them would be very risky.
Dant's pupils shook. His life or his wife? Not a very hard decision to make but he couldn't conclude. After all, he and his wife were very close. She trusted him. How could he betray that trust? Back on earth, she had always been by his side no matter how hard times were. Even though Dant was an incapable man, she didn't ditch him and chose to stay with him.
[Flashback]
Dant was shaking his legs like a kid while he rested his butt on the hospital chair. He was nervous. The reports were about to be revealed and he didn't know what lied in store for him. He could just hope for the better.
"Don't worry. No matter what kind of results we get it doesn't matter."
Verona clasped his nervous hands under her warm touch. There was a smile on her face that could calm any man's heart. Dant stopped shaking his legs as he felt her touch. He turned around to his adorable wife only to be greeted by the most beautiful smile possible.
"Yeah, you're right. Sorry to be insensitive."
They have been married for five years now and yet they had no child. It was a cause of great concern for the couple as they had to face the scoff of the relatives.
'Why do they still don't have any offspring?'
'Are they asexual or something?'
All such rumours spread even though they never talked about it. The couple had no problems in bed but yet they had no child through the years. It was then that they decided to take the appointment of a doctor. The doctor had proposed some medical tests whose reports were supposed to come out now.
*swing*
The door swung open. A nurse came out of the diagnostic chambers. She had two files in her hand. With a nurse's outfit and a nonchalant expression on her face, she had the air that she just meant business. She might be pretty but she wasn't the caring and loving nurse as one might fantasize.
Dant stood up as soon as he noticed the nurse. Verona's eyes opened wide not sure what was happening. But Dant didn't gave her any time to think as he stormed up to the nurse.
"Nurse, they are our reports right?"
The nurse raised her brows.
"Who are you by the way?"
"Ah, my bad. We are Dant and Verona, we were supposed to be getting our reports at this hour."
The nurse nodded. She flipped through the files to check what they had in store. Her nurse's uniform formed wrinkles around the pit as she swung her arm in a horizontal fashion.
"Yes, these are your reports it seems."
She looked up and then back at the file to check if the photograph matched with the person standing in front.
"Your wife is fine. But you are not, you are infertile."
She said as she scanned through it once more. Her face almost disappeared in the pages as she ducked closer to the file. Finishing her last read she passed the file onto Dant. But, Dant… he was so shocked that he couldn't even hold onto it as it fell onto the floor.
*crash*
He had his mouth opened wide, his eyes popped out. The nurse, for a moment, she felt bad for the guy. The guy's life was going to go through a turmoil now. His family and friends are gonna mock him, his lover was going to ditch him and he has to forever live under the shame. The tag of 'infertile' was forever etched to this man. Her lips pursed as she was about to console the man but then she shook her head a little and went back to her emotionless expression. She doesn't need to console the patients, that wasn't her job. And she had seen so many cases like this that she had got used to it, so much so that she doesn't care anymore.
