Chapter 243 - Reassessment
Klautz held onto his chin as he 'reassessed' his 'reassessed' conclusions.
Klautz shook his head upon realizing a concrete fact.
"No… he must have considered the ninjas too. But he must have only considered their levels and their numbers. It was just a shame that he was unlucky. The ninjas might be weak but they specialized in killing humans alone."
Klautz stared at the black haired boy in front of him as he nodded in affirmation.
"This is why I don't take anything for granted. Hell is a cruel and predictable place ridden with chaos."
*sigh*
Klautz sighed. But on the other side of the audience a completely different picture was being painted.
"AHhhh!"
The man continued screaming. Benton's eyes scanned the crowd as he locked eyes with them.
"Look at him. Such helplessness! He can only grit his teeth and endure the torture. There is no place for him, to go. There is no escape," Benton glared at the masses. "If you really don't want to end up like him. Don't walk in his path! Don't be useless like him! Prove your worth. There is no place in hell for those who can't protect themselves. This is not your earth where all you do is dilly dally."
Benton himself had never gone to earth. But he had read accounts and heard of stories from his seniors who frequently reminisced of that place. His father himself was one of the few who desired to support the newbies and it was because of his efforts and many others due to which an establishment like the newbie camp came into being.
As Benton had read through the records there was only one conclusion that had come to his mind. A mind that was riddled with the pains from hell.
'Naive'
That was his conclusion and assessment.
Majority of the humans had taken their times of peace for granted. They had lived their lives in luxury with only small troubles to face, as they dilly dallied like rabbits and piled up on their bellies. Indeed, in the face of hell all troubles of the earthlings would appear to be only 'small' and insignificant.
'Such people have no place here in hell.'
"Either prove that you are worthy of the resources that are spent on you or perish!" Benton screamed.
Klautz's ears twitched at the sudden change of tone in Benton's voice. The 'hint' that Benton dropped wasn't lost on him who had lived many decades in hell.
"For it is only death that awaits the naive mind." Benton claimed with a bright eyed look.
*swish*
Benton took out his enchanted sword from his scabbard. It was a weapon quite different from the one Klautz used. It was long and had a sharp one sided edge while having a really short handle making the contrast quite unlike Klautz's ninjato.
Klautz squinted his eyes as he glanced at Benton with a piercing gaze. It was quite in contrast to the Benton that he knew from his past. The Benton of his life was completely antagonistic to the earth borns unlike the Benton of today who seemed to be dropping 'hints' to the misery that was soon going to befall on the newbies.
"So he had tried, it seems?"
Klautz's nose wrinkled as his lips slowly curved into a slight smile.
It was clear as day from his words and actions. Benton could have killed one of the newbies here instead to prove his strength. But did Benton do that? He went through the pain of preparing a newbie camp alumni who had completely failed in the world of hell. Not being able to survive on his own he could only live the life of a 'slave'.
Benton had indeed tried to change the way the newbies carried themselves… their lack of effort could only get on his nerves. He had tried to change their ways but the newbies had disappointed him time and time again causing him to see no other option but a revolt for securing resources for those who 'deserved' it.
During the revolt Benton had appeared like a cold blooded native fanatic. But that was hardly the case. He was a pragmatist through and through.
But if he hadn't put his voice strongly would anyone have listened to him? No one would have. So he who once had seen hope in the newbies had no other choice but to make a complete 180 degrees in his ways.
Behind the mask of the cold blooded fanatic there was always a pragmatist that wanted to turn things for the better. A true hero that was misjudged by all.
Klautz nodded.
"Well by that time he would have created a mask strong enough for no one to notice. The native fanatics of hell would have never supported his cause had they known that he wasn't one of 'them'. Logical reasoning had no place in the hearts of those who were driven by a sense of superiority."
Benton placed his sword on top of the breathless man's neck. The man's flesh had burned charred black and his eyes had grown dim without any hope. Even if Benton were to kill him now he wouldn't realize anything.
His senseless body didn't even realize when the cold blade was placed on his neck.
Benton lifted his sword to swing only to swing it down to end his suffering.
"Ha!"
It was then…
"Wait!"
A feminine voice called out begging him to stop. And indeed the blade did stop as Benton's ears twitched. He somehow recognized the voice.
Benton turned towards the voice. What greeted him was a frowning Shizu causing his eyes to widen on realization at a small variable that had crept in his little 'show'.
"Ms. Tokui?" he whispered with a pensive expression.
It was quite a pity. But Benton wasn't the sole star of the newbie camp this year.
