Chapter 221: Chapter 111: The End of Humanity, A Mysterious Young Man! (Part 1)
In Reincarnation World X0089, in the year 2012, an unidentified wormhole appeared at the bottom of the planet’s Pacific Ocean. Giant creatures known as Kaiju surged from it, invading Earth.
To resist these monsters, humanity developed giant, dual-piloted mechs called Jaegers to combat them.
In the very beginning, humanity relied on these massive mechs to successfully kill and repel the Kaiju.
However, as time passed, the monsters continuously evolved, becoming larger and more toxic, while the mechs were destroyed one after another...
As the wormhole stabilized and the frequency of monster invasions surged, humanity’s giant mechs were no longer able to simultaneously fight off such a massive number of monsters.
Humanity was pushed to the brink of extinction.
.....
Hong Kong, Shatterdome Base Command Center.
The human Jaeger commander, Marshal Henry Smith, and Chief Technology Officer Tendo Choi stood before the floor-to-ceiling windows of the command center.
They gazed at the pitch-black ocean, their eyes profound, resembling two frozen statues...
The command center was bathed in blinding red light, and blaring sirens continuously tore through the stagnant air.
On the holographic screen, the signals of the last three Jaegers were rapidly extinguishing.
Inside the command center, the staff’s reports rang out.
"Marshal... Fire Demon Ragnarok has been destroyed! Pilot vital signs have completely disappeared!"
"Mammoth Apostle’s power core has exploded! Russian pilot Takrovsky... confirmed KIA!"
"Crimson Typhoon has been dismembered! The Hong Kong coastline is about to... fall!"
"Damn it!"
Henry slammed his fist against the tempered glass, emitting a dull thud as fresh blood slowly seeped down the pane...
Behind him, the world map on the massive LCD screen was covered in a bloody hue. Cities along the Pacific coast successively turned black, representing their fall. Only Hong Kong, the star of Asia, still stubbornly shone with light.
"Marshal..." Tendo Choi’s voice trembled, his glasses reflecting the ticking countdown on the screen.
"The Breach’s energy readings have broken past the threshold... The next wave will be two Category V Kaijus, estimated to make landfall in Hong Kong in ten minutes."
Henry abruptly turned around, the bloodshot veins in his eyes looking as ferocious as a cracked web.
"Tendo, tell me what backup plans we still have!"
"All Jaegers have been wiped out... The electromagnetic railgun array is paralyzed... The breach in the Anti-Kaiju Wall has reached fifty kilometers..."
Tendo Choi operated his computer, pulling up data streams, his fingertips twitching slightly from despair.
"The wormhole’s stability has reached 99%. The next invasion could bring ten... maybe even twenty of them! Humanity is completely without hope!"
Henry grabbed him by the collar, his roar drowning out the sirens.
"Then initiate the suicide plan! Use nukes to destroy the Breach!"
"The Breach’s energy field will detonate the nukes prematurely! Besides, the yield of a single nuclear bomb is simply not enough to destroy the wormhole as it is now..."
"Then dispatch a Jaeger to carry the nukes through! If one isn’t enough, then use ten!"
Henry roared hoarsely, his eyes having long lost their usual calm and strategic composure.
Tendo Choi shot back hoarsely.
"How is that possible? The depths of the sea are crawling with Kaijus. There are at least dozens guarding the wormhole..."
He paused, his voice sounding somewhat downcast.
"Furthermore, we don’t have any pilots left. The vital signs of humanity’s last two pilots, just disappeared..."
A live feed of the Hong Kong coast suddenly popped up on the screen. A hundred-meter-tall Category IV Kaiju tore through the port’s steel defense line.
It spat out lava-like biochemical projectiles from its mouth. The skyscrapers, corroded by the venom, instantly melted like wax.
Images of citizens screaming and fleeing were transmitted in real-time. The cries of children pierced the eardrums of everyone in the command center.
The aged face of the UN Secretary-General appeared on the LCD screen.
"Everyone, all Jaegers have been defeated. It is with deep regret that I inform all of humanity that our civilization is about to end. Please pray to your gods, and pray that your souls may ascend to heaven after death."
Henry slowly released his grip, his back crashing against the cold control console.
