Sacrificed To The Triplet Alpha Kings
Chapter 418: Nicholas Found Lilith In The Veil
He reached for the soul anchor.
It was there. Glowing red against his translucent chest. Pulsing steadily like a heartbeat.
Guiding him.
Nicholas focused on it and felt the pull.
Not a physical pull. But a direction. A sense that if he moved in a specific way, he would be moving toward something.
Toward Lilith.
Nicholas began to walk.
Or float. Or move. It was hard to define motion in a place where space had no meaning.
But he was traveling. Moving through the grey nothing. Following the pull of the soul anchor toward wherever Lilith’s soul was being held.
Time was impossible to track.
Nicholas might have been walking for seconds or hours or days. There was no way to tell. No sense of duration. Just the eternal grey and the steady pull of the crystal.
And then....
Something changed.
The grey shifted. Darkened. Became less uniform.
Shapes appeared in the distance.
Not buildings. Not structures. Just...forms. Things that might have been memories or might have been souls or might have been fragments of both.
Nicholas moved closer.
The shapes resolved into clearer images.
People.
Or what used to be people.
Translucent forms wandering through the grey. Some looked almost solid....recently dead perhaps, still holding their shape. Others were barely there....wisps and fragments dissolving into the nothing.
All of them lost.
All of them wandering.
All of them alone.
Nicholas felt horror wash through him.
This is where souls come when they die, he realized. This is the Veil. This is what happens after.
Endless wandering. Slow dissolution. Becoming less and less until you were nothing but a whisper in the grey.
Lilith is here somewhere, Nicholas thought desperately. Lost in this. Dissolving. Waiting.
He moved faster. Following the soul anchor’s pull more urgently.
The crystal was glowing brighter now. Pulsing faster.
Getting close.
Nicholas pushed through clusters of wandering souls. They did not react to his presence. Did not seem to see him. Just drifted aimlessly through the grey.
And then....
The soul anchor blazed.
Bright red light so intense Nicholas had to look away.
But when he looked back....
There.
A figure in the distance.
More solid than the others. More defined. Still holding shape despite being in the Veil.
Dark hair. Slender build. Sitting on the grey ground with her arms wrapped around her knees.
Lilith.
Nicholas ran, or tried to run. Movement was still strange here. But he closed the distance as fast as he could.
And as he got closer, he saw her more clearly.
She looked....broken.
Not physically. Her translucent form was intact. But her expression was devastated. Lost. Like she had been wandering the grey for so long she had forgotten what anything else looked like.
"Lilith," Nicholas tried to say.
No sound came out. But she reacted.
Her head snapped up. Her eyes...grey and translucent like everything else here....fixed on him.
And for a moment, there was no recognition.
Just a lost soul looking at another lost soul.
Then something shifted in her expression.
Nicholas?
Not spoken aloud. Nicholas heard it directly in his mind. Thought-to-thought communication in a place where voices did not exist.
Lilith, Nicholas thought back desperately. It’s me. I’m here. I found you.
She stood slowly. Stared at him like she could not believe what she was seeing.
You’re dead, Lilith thought. You died. You came here. Why would you....
I came for you, Nicholas thought. I came to bring you back.
Back? Lilith’s expression was confused. There is no back. There’s only this. The grey. The nothing. The waiting until we dissolve.
No, Nicholas thought firmly. Lilith, listen to me. You can go back. You can live again. But I need you to trust me. I need you to let me anchor you.
He reached out and took her hands.
Or tried to. Their translucent forms passed through each other at first.
But then Nicholas felt it....the bond.
Broken. Severed when Lilith died. But still there. Echoes. Traces. Enough connection that when he focused, when he pulled on those residual ties, his hands became solid enough to hold hers.
Lilith gasped.
I can feel you, she thought. I can feel the bond. But it’s broken. It snapped when I died.
I know, Nicholas thought. But there’s enough left. Enough that I can hold onto you. Enough that I can anchor you while Victoria pulls you back to life.
Aunt Victoria? Lilith’s expression shifted to hope. Then fear. She’s trying to resurrect me? Nicholas, no. That’s forbidden. That’s dark magic. She’ll corrupt herself trying to.....
She already has, Nicholas thought. She made deals. She used blood magic. She did everything necessary to give you a chance at life. And Lilith...it’s working. Right now, in the mortal realm, she and Elena are performing the resurrection ritual on your body. All you have to do is hold on to me. Let me anchor you. And when they pull, you go.
And you? Lilith asked. You come back too?
Nicholas felt his translucent chest tighten.
This was the moment. The moment he had to tell her.
The moment she would understand what his presence here actually meant.
No, Nicholas thought quietly. I stay. That’s the price. One soul for another. You get to live. I stay here and get consumed by the entity that holds this place. It’s the only way the resurrection works.
Lilith’s expression shattered.
No, she thought desperately. No, Nicholas, you can’t. You can’t trade yourself for me. I’m not worth that. I’m not worth you dying permanently.
Yes you are, Nicholas thought firmly. Lilith, you are worth everything. And I choose this. I choose to give you life. I choose to stay here so you can go back.
I won’t let you, Lilith thought. She tried to pull her hands away. I won’t go back if it means you stay here. I’ll refuse. I’ll fight Victoria’s pull. I’ll stay in the Veil with you.
You can’t, Nicholas said. The ritual is already in motion. When Victoria pulls, you’ll go whether you want to or not. The only question is whether you go back hating me for this choice or understanding that I made it gladly.
Lilith was crying. Translucent tears streaming down her translucent face.
I can’t lose you, she thought. I barely had you. We barely had time. It’s not fair.
I know, Nicholas thought. But Lilith, I would rather have the short time we had and give you a full life than have nothing at all. I would rather die knowing you’re alive than live knowing I let you stay dead.
Nicholas....
Before she could finish, Nicholas felt it.
A pull.
Not from the soul anchor. From somewhere else. From the direction of life.
Victoria had started pulling.
The resurrection was beginning.
