Chapter 364: A Bridge Between Life And Death

"How long?" Sebastian asked hoarsely.

Elena considered. "A few days. Maybe a week if we’re lucky. The curse will adapt to my magic the same way it adapted to Selene’s divine power and the necklace’s protective charm. When it does, it’ll come back stronger than before."

"Then we have a week to find a permanent solution," Nicholas said.

"Yes," Elena agreed.

She turned to look at Lilith sleeping peacefully now, no convulsions, no blood, no signs of the horror that had been consuming her just minutes ago.

"We need to talk," Elena said quietly. "All of us. About what’s really happening to your mate and what it’s going to take to save her permanently."

She looked at Victoria. "I received your message. I came as fast as I could without revealing my location to the vampire hunting me. And I’ve been researching this curse since the moment I gave Nicholas that necklace."

"You knew," Victoria said. "You knew what was happening to her."

"I suspected," Elena corrected. "I felt the divine magic on Nicholas when we met. Recognized the signature of a Moon Goddess curse. I saw a signature of a Morvaine witch bonded to three cursed Alphas, And I knew she was in danger."

"So you gave us the necklace," Nicholas said.

"To buy time," Elena confirmed. "So you could find someone who actually knew how to help. Which apparently meant finding me." She smiled slightly. "Clever use of the sacred portal, Victoria. Not many witches remember that ritual anymore."

"Will you help her?" Lucian asked bluntly. "Can you break the curse?"

Elena was quiet for a long moment.

"I don’t know," she admitted. "What Lilith has isn’t a normal curse. It’s divine punishment combined with a soul bond and ancestral Morvaine magic all tangled together in ways that shouldn’t be possible. Breaking it without killing her will require..." She stopped.

"Require what?" Sebastian demanded.

Elena looked at the three Alphas with an expression Victoria could not quite read.

"A miracle," Elena said softly. "Or something very close to it."

She moved to sit in the chair beside Lilith’s bed, looking at the unconscious girl with something like wonder.

"But first," Elena continued, "you all need to understand what you’re really dealing with. Because this isn’t just a curse. It’s not just divine punishment or a prophecy demanding sacrifice."

"Then what is it?" Victoria asked.

Elena met her gaze directly.

"It’s a test," Elena said. "The Moon Goddess doesn’t just want Lilith dead. She wants to see if Lilith is strong enough to survive what she’s becoming. And if the bonds between her and these three Alphas are real enough to withstand the impossible."

The room fell silent.

"What is she becoming?" Nicholas asked quietly.

Elena smiled...sad and knowing.

"Something that hasn’t existed in this world for centuries," Elena said. "Something powerful enough to change everything about how supernatural politics and magic work. Something dangerous and beautiful and absolutely unprecedented."

She looked at Lilith sleeping peacefully.

"Your mate," Elena said, "is becoming a bridge. Between life and death. Between wolf and witch. Between the mortal realm and the divine. And if she survives this, if we can break the curse without destroying her in the process....she’ll be one of the most powerful beings alive."

"And if we can’t?" Lucian asked.

Elena’s expression turned grave.

"Then the curse kills her. The soul bond traps her in limbo. And you three spend the rest of your very short lives going slowly insane feeling her suffering through connections that death can’t break."

She stood and looked at each of them in turn.

"So," Elena said. "Are you ready to hear what it’s going to take to save her? Because I warn you....you’re not going to like it."

Lilith’s POV

Waking up felt like clawing her way out of a grave.

Lilith’s first conscious thought was pain. Not the sharp kind that came from injury. Something deeper. More fundamental. Like every cell in her body had been torn apart and stitched back together slightly wrong.

Her second thought was noise.

Voices. Multiple voices. Low and urgent and filled with the kind of tension that came from arguments no one wanted to be having.

Lilith tried to open her eyes and found that even that simple action took more effort than it should.

Her eyelids felt like they weighed a thousand pounds. Her limbs were lead. Her chest was tight and breathing hurt and everything was just hard in ways that made her want to sink back into the darkness where nothing hurt and nothing required effort.

But the voices kept pulling at her.

One in particular.

Female. Unfamiliar. Speaking with the kind of calm authority that made people listen whether they wanted to or not.

"...not a matter of wanting to help. It’s a matter of what’s actually possible. The curse is divine in origin. Breaking it requires either divine intervention or...."

"Or what?" That was Nicholas. Lilith would know his voice anywhere. Deep and steady and trying so hard to stay controlled even though she could feel his desperation through the bond.

"Or a sacrifice," the unfamiliar woman said. "That’s how divine curses work. The Moon Goddess demanded payment for Aleric Blackwood’s crimes. Either the bloodline pays with their lives or someone pays in their place."

"Lilith is not dying." Sebastian this time. Voice rough like he had been crying. The bond between them pulsed with grief and determination in equal measure.

"I’m not suggesting she should," the woman said patiently. "I’m explaining the mechanics of what we’re dealing with so you understand why breaking this curse is not as simple as performing a ritual or speaking some magic words."

Lilith forced her eyes open.

The world was blurry at first. Just shapes and colors that did not quite make sense. She blinked several times and things slowly came into focus.

She was in her room at the estate. The familiar ceiling. The familiar walls. Sunlight streaming through the window in a way that suggested late afternoon.

How long had she been unconscious?
