Rotting Land: Survive
Chapter 1119: Operation Old Xu Rescue Begins (5)
“Is everyone ready?” Hu Xiaodong whispered quietly to the team members beside him.
Duan Chengwu raised his cleaver, replying silently.
“Let’s go!” Wei Dazhuang urged impatiently.
Hu Xiaodong exhaled lightly and then reached out his right hand to grip the safety exit door handle.
With force, he pulled, and the door swung open at once.
As soon as the door opened, Duan Chengwu dashed out first.
The sound of the door hinges was definitely the horn of attack. Though not very loud, it was still particularly piercing in the empty building.
Duan Chengwu, the first to enter, immediately locked onto his killing target. Like a leopard pouncing on prey, he rushed straight toward the zombie by the door.
The zombie was apparently still in a daze, with most of its attention being drawn by the sound of the door hinge.
By the time it perceived the incoming gust of wind, Duan Chengwu had already slashed his steel blade down with full force, splitting a gash in its skull.
Blood dripped down the blade, instantly staining the zombie’s face red.
“Captain, did they go in?” Wei Dazhuang, having just fed the boy breakfast, saw Xu Renjie staring intently in the direction of the curtain, knowing the team outside must be taking action.
Old Xu nodded, his expression serious.
Just a few minutes ago, he had watched Hua Xiaodong and the others enter the building, witnessing their zombie hunt outside.
Xu Renjie was quite confident in the action squad composed of Hu Xiaodong and others.
After all, the team consisted of seasoned veterans from the digital killing formation, with both their zombie-handling skills and psychological resilience being the backbone strength of the group.
He had no doubt about the capability of these four, but facing the unknown Kanghui Mansion and the dangers that could arise at any moment left Old Xu with a heavy heart.
I shouldn’t have been so insistent back then. Otherwise, the team wouldn’t be exposed to such risk.
While Old Xu felt regret and remorse, far away, on the sixth floor of Kanghui Mansion, a surprise attack was about to commence.
As the main players of the surprise attack, the Survivor Squad knew that the key to this battle was speed.
Hu Xiaodong and the others understood this well; they needed to leverage the advantages of the office building rooms and eliminate the zombies room by room before they formed an effective encircling offensive.
Two people per group, attacking from both sides.
Hu Xiaodong and Wei Dazhuang each wielded cleavers, hacking in the right-side room.
When dealing with brainless creatures like zombies, there is no need to overthink; just use what’s in your hand to smash the opponent’s head.
For Hu Xiaodong and Wei Dazhuang, two tough guys, this approach matched their personalities.
Especially Wei Dazhuang, who wielded his scythes with increasingly remarkable skill.
During idle times, he intentionally and unintentionally sought advice from Hua Biao and others on sword skill.
Although it’s not something that can be learned immediately, Wei Dazhuang’s comprehension was fairly good, and due to frequent battle exercises, he gradually developed the air of a practiced fighter.
As for Hu Xiaodong, he was originally an athlete, even after retiring due to injury, he always kept in touch with sports.
So in terms of swordplay, his skills were naturally much stronger than the novice Wei Dazhuang.
However, when it came to the best swordsman in the team, Huo Yuankai stood out.
Despite Huo Yuankai being mute and having a disability, he wielded his Tang Blade with exceptional artistry.
If Wei Dazhuang and Hu Xiaodong relied on brute strength to slay zombies, then Huo Yuankai killed with finesse, using agility, moves, and cleverness.
Agile as a swallow, sword technique like a dragon; watching Huo Yuankai hunt zombies was a spectacle to behold.
Compared to Huo Yuankai’s ease, Tang Xiaoquan appeared much more disheveled.
As the team’s brain, Tang Xiaoquan found frontline fighting to be a weak point.
Logically, such risky tasks shouldn’t be led by him, but as the plan maker, he felt it necessary to be present to assemble information for on-the-spot adjustments in the following actions.
Though Tang Xiaoquan’s manner of killing seemed clumsy, this was only in relative terms.
In reality, Tang Xiaoquan wasn’t as weak as portrayed; his awkwardness stemmed fundamentally from his teammates’ exceptional strength.
They overshadowed his growth, concealed his presence.
Put Tang Xiaoquan in another survivor team, his battle prowess would definitely be notable.
The building was structured rectangularly, with 20 office rooms surrounding an elevator and freight elevator used by office personnel for moving up and down. Hu Xiaodong and others climbed the staircase at the building’s rear.
Due to the apocalypse striking during the weekend, many offices in the building were in a holiday shutdown state.
Thus, within a few minutes, the Survivor Squad cleared all rooms; of course, this was mainly because many of the doors were closed and didn’t require checking.
Finding a room facing the camp’s direction, Hu Xiaodong pushed the door open, entered, and instructed Duan Chengwu and Wei Dazhuang to stand guard outside.
He then went inside with Tang Xiaoquan, carrying equipment.
“This spot will do!” Standing by the window, Hu Xiaodong immediately spotted the camp’s six-story building.
However, to be prudent, he contacted Hua Biao back home using the hand-held radio: “Hey, Hua Biao, this is Hu Xiaodong, respond if you hear me! Over!”
Hua Biao had been stationed by the radio, refraining from initiating contact to avoid inconveniencing action squad members.
But nearing 20 minutes without updates from the squad, his anxiousness was palpable.
Hurriedly picking up the radio by the desk, Hua Biao responded eagerly: “This is Hua Biao; received connection. What are the instructions? Over.”
“Hua Biao, we’re now positioned on the building’s sixth floor, right by the window. Can you see us?”
Upon hearing this, Hua Biao signaled Wang Qiang to pass the binoculars.
Taking them, he quickly adjusted them toward Hu Xiaodong’s indicated position to observe.
Sure enough, after some adjustments, he saw Hu Xiaodong at the window holding the radio.
“I see you, Hu!”
“Can you see the entire interior of the room?”
“Yes.”
“Great!”
Upon receiving confirmation, Hu Xiaodong laid down the radio and nodded toward Tang Xiaoquan waiting behind: “Okay, Xiaotang, let’s start setting up.”
The reason for confirming with Hua Biao about interior visibility was to facilitate real-time monitoring of the room’s dynamics during combat.
Ultimately, the status of several sound sources directly related to the mission’s success.
If they could remotely track their condition, survivors could better respond to sudden incidents.
Although the room was selected, the specific placement of the sound sources needed careful consideration.
To ensure optimal efficiency, they couldn’t be placed where zombies could easily destroy them.
Surveying the surroundings, Hu Xiaodong and Tang Xiaoquan unanimously decided to place the equipment atop the office cabinet.
