Rotting Land: Survive
Chapter 1103 - 1091
Chapter 1103: Chapter 1091
Unfolding the car hood, locating the place where the horn was, Hua Biao began to operate.
All the tools were prepared by Wang Zhongyu, who initially wanted to accompany the team.
However, considering the current weather conditions and to not delay the journey, Hua Biao refused the young man’s offer.
While Hua Biao was working, Duan Chengwu and Shen Lian couldn’t just rest.
One held a hand crossbow at the back of the car, and the other closely guarded Hua Biao’s side, ensuring his safety.
The dismantling went relatively smoothly, but the condition of the small truck was extremely poor, even from the exterior, it was easy to determine that this ’thing was quite old,’ on top of having not been driven for over half a year, many internal components had deteriorated due to sun and rain exposure.
Especially the screws, the rusty corrosion made them extremely difficult to remove, so Hua Biao had to resort to pounding them.
Of course, this inevitably drew the attention of zombies, and Duan Chengwu had already used the hand crossbow to deal with more than five of those curious zombie creatures coming over.
Fortunately, the five zombies were all just ordinary ’Pacers’, if it were ’Jumpers’, then it would really be...
As time ticked by the second, after some tossing around, Hua Biao finally managed to remove two large speakers from the vehicle.
Once done, he shifted his focus inside the car, knowing there were still horns under the central control of the small truck to fiddle with.
After another half an hour of tossing, by the time Hua Biao stopped, seventy minutes had gone by in the blink of an eye.
However, after all this effort, the trio only managed to get two big and two small, totaling four horns.
The task was daunting with a long way to go, yet the weather was mercilessly changing.
Not daring to delay, the trio quickly packed up relevant items and continued to explore ahead.
While Hua Biao was busy tossing around for the rescue operation, the ’Zhong’, ’Guo’ brothers at the station were also not idle.
Although the handheld radio currently had no horn, it did not hinder their operation.
The relevant control software needed to be written, and upon completion, basic testing needed to be conducted.
Fortunately, the location was only a few hundred meters away across two neighborhood blocks, so testing could be done outside of the village.
As for the away action team tens of kilometers from the station, Hu Xiaodong was currently leading the group in cleaning snow accumulated on the car.
After accumulating for half a day, the car body was nearly covered by snow water from the wheel hub down.
To ensure the condition of the car, necessary cleaning was required.
Currently, the calmest ones were Old Xu and Lei Tong who were deep inside the cage of the abandoned city.
They had nothing much to do now, unable to break through, the only thing to do was rest within the lair.
If survival issues, and the steps for the rescue operations that the brothers at the station need to worry about are set aside, honestly, this time of being besieged is indeed the most comfortable days since Old Xu entered the apocalypse.
Only physical comfort didn’t mean comfort of the mind.
Old Xu constantly worried about the safety of the brothers outside.
This is probably the responsibility and sorrow of him being a grassroots company officer.
No matter the time and place, regardless of the situation, he always lives for others.
"How’s it? Has the child slept?"
Seeing Lei Tong come out from the bedroom, Old Xu leaning on the chair asked subsequently.
Nodding, Lei Tong dragged a stool over and sat down: "Asleep. But are we not telling the child about his father for now?"
Drinking a sip of tea, Old Xu shook his head: "Not for now, this child has a steady mind, since he can accept the fact that his father is not around now, let’s not create complications. Lest it backfires and makes him anxious."
"Mm, understood. Just unsure how Xiao Hu and others are doing? This damned snowstorm, who knows when it will end!" Breathing out, Lei Tong rubbed his hands vigorously, then plugged them into his sleeve cuffs.
Lei Tong’s words once again drew Old Xu into a frown of worry, he was a hundred percent sure, given Hu Xiaodong and others’ personalities, they were taking care of the rescue operation outside.
Suddenly, just as Old Xu was bowing his head in contemplation, a sound came from the window on the wall.
Old Xu jerked his head around, his face full of astonishment.
On the window, a thick layer of snow was imprinted by a large five-clawed hand.
The palm had fissures all over, the nails were honed into barbed hook blades, if scratched by them, getting pierced through was a certainty.
Quickly bending over and squatting, Old Xu swiftly crawled towards the room on the side.
Reaching the spot, Old Xu and Lei Tong could finally breathe slightly.
No doubt, the five-claw outside originated from a ’Climber’. However, from the current sounds of the other party, it didn’t seem to be coming for Old Xu and Lei Tong specifically.
"Captain, should we attend to the child?"
Upon hearing this sentence, Old Xu’s brows furrowed again, remembering the boy was still sleeping in the inner room.
To prevent the ignorant youth from causing a blunder, Old Xu nodded and agreed: "Go ahead, control the situation, I’ll keep an eye here."
Following orders, Lei Tong got up and went to the bedroom, while Old Xu stayed by the wall to continue monitoring.
Soon, the creature began moving, with the movement came unavoidable scraping of the claws against the glass surface, the screech of those fingertips rubbing was truly nerve-racking.
In response, Old Xu wasn’t bothered. As long as the creature did not break in through the window, it was the best outcome for him.
However, just as Old Xu thought this crisis was over, and the ’Climber’ would step away elsewhere.
Unexpectedly, the damned ’Climber’ turned around on the spot, its large face now pressed against the window.
Old Xu’s reaction was indeed swift; the moment the window reflected the black shadow, he immediately withdrew his head.
Just withdrawing wasn’t enough; his mind was still tense.
No matter how swiftly Old Xu pulled back, he still feared the creature would see his figure.
For a moment, everything became heavy, Old Xu clung motionlessly to the wall’s edge, his cleaver gripped firmly in his hand.
His attention was raised to the utmost level; should he hear the glass breaking outside, he would rush out immediately to slay the ’Climber’.
Yet, as one minute passed, the exterior remained as calm as still water, aside from the howling wind and snow, the anticipated scene of zombies breaking in did not occur.
Despite this, Old Xu dared not act recklessly.
He’s not afraid of competing for patience with the zombies; he’s just afraid of rash actions revealing him to the zombies.
After holding out for nearly five minutes, confirming there was no further movement outside, Old Xu finally stood up, peeking outside with his head, then swiftly withdrew, exhaling a long sigh.
Safe! The window that previously reflected the zombie’s face now showed no one, only the snow cover had also been wiped away.
Immediately Xu Renjie hastily moved to the window, quickly pulling down the curtain that was raised this morning.
It seems that, for the foreseeable future, this curtain cannot be raised again.
Returning to the bedroom, Lei Tong was guarding the child in the corner.
Seeing Old Xu enter with a cleaver, he reckoned safety was mostly restored.
A false alarm! Had it not been for the two handling things appropriately, a life-and-death struggle would’ve been inevitable right now.
