Chapter 1002: Chapter 987: Trip to the Police Station (5)
Old Xu’s resolute decision was somewhat odd, but considering the opponent’s role in the team, Derek couldn’t say much.
After all, having just joined the team, although he was relatively familiar with Old Xu, Derek, who matured abroad compared to peers, wisely kept his mouth shut and chose to obey Old Xu’s orders.
The group stepped out of the house, starting to move downstairs, but unexpectedly, as they reached the stairway entrance, a loud explosion sounded.
"Bang!"
"What is this..." Hu Xiaodong raised his eyebrows, looking at Old Xu. Xu Renjie hesitated for just two seconds, then shouted explosively, "Not good! Something’s happening outside!"
No need for confirmation; Old Xu was one hundred percent sure that the bang came from a double-barreled shotgun, and at this moment, no one but Hua Biao could have caused such a commotion.
Footsteps flew towards the ground floor as Old Xu, Hu Xiaodong, Wei Dazhuang, along with the others, rushed frantically like ants on a hot pan.
Old Xu knew his soldiers too well—unless absolutely necessary, the opponent would never use firearms in such a place.
Since Hua Biao chose to shoot, that meant the situation had reached a critical moment!
You must not get hurt! Old Xu prayed silently.
After all, he arranged for Wang Zhongyu to stay outside and check the vehicles.
If either Wang or Hua were injured because of this, Old Xu would never forgive himself for the rest of his life.
With the pull of Hua Biao’s trigger, the shotgun’s bullets formed a dense pellet net in the air.
Tiny shrapnel sweeping along with the declaration of doom rushed towards the airborne humanoid black shadow.
Then, the figure and the bullet nets passed by each other; Wang Zhongyu, busy checking the car’s underside, felt the car top suddenly shudder, followed by the four wheels suspending directly falling down.
Startled within, but seasoned veteran Wang Zhongyu controlled his panicked state, springing out from under the car at the first moment, he saw Hua Biao approaching with his gun raised.
Upon seeing the dark and cold muzzle facing him, Wang Zhongyu instinctively leaned towards it, staring in astonishment at Hua Biao, asking in a deep voice, "What are you doing?"
Realizing the muzzle issue, Hua Biao uttered an "Aye" and moved the muzzle away, quickly pulling Wang Zhongyu up while he quickly commanded, "Stop talking nonsense, pick up your weapon, zombies are coming!"
"Ah!?" Hua Biao’s following words were no less shocking than the twin-barreled muzzle had been to Wang Zhongyu.
Upon hearing this, Wang Zhongyu subconsciously glanced towards the top of the car; just one look, all his doubts were answered.
"My God! How did this thing end up here?"
"The sky!" Pointing upwards, Hua Biao retreated step by step, the only thing steady was his shotgun aiming forward.
"Watch the walls on both sides! There are ’Jumpers’!"
It had been a long time since he heard these three words, long enough that Wang Zhongyu almost forgot.
But zombies, these beasts, no matter the time, just hearing about them always reminds you of some undesired memories.
Wang Zhongyu could never forget the first encounter with "Jumpers" during a high-speed chase; those beasts’ agile speed and terrifying jumping and climbing abilities indeed etched an indelible impression.
Frankly speaking, last time, if it hadn’t been for everyone inside the high-speed bus and Wang Zhongyu’s outstanding driving skills, perhaps...
Does he still have the chance to defeat these beasts today? Wang Zhongyu did not know, all he knew was to grip his weapon tightly, ready to chop down anything that intended to approach.
Given their climbing and jumping capabilities, you couldn’t predict where these beasts would appear.
Wang Zhongyu and Hua Biao, back to back, each guarding their side, kept vigilant of the surroundings.
"Who’s there!" A sensation hit his shoulder; the tense Wang Zhongyu instinctively swung his blade to slash.
But just as the blade was about to fall, a big hand reached out!
"It’s me! Xu Renjie!" Old Xu grabbed Wang Zhongyu’s falling steel blade, revealing his identity with a deep voice.
Upon seeing the person’s face, Wang Zhongyu relaxed, apologetically saying, "Sorry, Old Xu, I didn’t know..."
"It’s okay! I heard the gunshot earlier; what happened?" Old Xu released his grip, asking anxiously.
"Zombies attacked, Jumpers, they jumped over from the side wall, and in a panic, I shot... Sorry, Captain, because I..."
"Don’t apologize, you didn’t do anything wrong, Old Xu, if it hadn’t been for Hua Biao’s timely shot just now, he and I probably..." Wang Zhongyu shook his head, still somewhat shaken.
"Enough! Now is not the time for this conversation, the gunshot surely rattled the zombies outside; we need to hurry and retreat!" Hu Xiaodong, holding his bow, slightly elevated the arrow facing the direction Hua Biao just pointed.
"Yes, Little Hu is right, form a defensive formation, retreat back into the building, quickly!"
The shuffling steps on the street were the zombies’ warning signal; the Survivor Team members didn’t dare delay, quickly following Old Xu’s instructions, they steadily retreated.
But even their movements were a step too late, as two "Jumpers" climbed the wall to the top and lunged towards Old Xu and the others.
Damn!
"Bang!" A gunshot rang out, bullets flew through the cold wind, cutting through a streak of light, then headed towards the attacking beast.
Old Xu’s marksmanship was indisputable, especially having been on high alert, so the bullet aimed to shoot landed precisely into the beast’s skull.
And almost simultaneously, Hu Xiaodong, also prepared for action, was the first to release an arrow.
In quick succession, the two zombies fell to the ground, but the survivors didn’t feel a tinge of excitement, because as soon as those two "Jumpers" hit the ground, another dozen emerged from the wall top.
"Bang! Bang bang!" There’s nothing left to say, Old Xu immediately pulled the trigger, quickly commanding, "Retreat! Everyone retreat into the building! Hurry!"
It appeared the previous comrades’ influence made the new "Jumpers" significantly more clever.
They no longer lunged blindly like the first two, but used erratic movements, making Old Xu’s hastily fired bullets miss their target.
"Damn!" Undoubtedly, considering the limited number of bullets, each shot counted, and facing these frustrating "Jumpers," relying solely on knife slashes clearly was impractical.
Thus, Old Xu didn’t want to waste bullets on these holes of opportunity since the open ground was unfavorable for dealing with "Jumpers" effectively.
The six retreated into the building following the defensive formation practiced daily.
During the retreat, Hu Xiaodong, under the protection of his comrades, managed to deal with one of the beasts.
The survivors rushed into the building while the "Jumpers" pursued closely.
To tackle the tailing beasts, Old Xu ordered everyone to head to the first-floor corridor, intending to set an ambush for the "Jumpers" there. (To be continued.
