Chapter 1444: Royal Court Part 4
Chapter 1444: Royal Court Part 4
When Jessica learned that Xu Feng purposely chose a verbal argument with the guard to practice his debate for the hearing, she was rendered speechless.
In the meantime, Jace stared at Xu Feng as if he were some lunatic. ’Crazy... how could he think like that? He’s acting like the Royal Court was some kind of children’s play.’
His eyes then shifted to the unconscious guard. At this moment, he became quite jealous and envious of the guard.
By fainting from the verbal argument, the guard could easily avoid punishment and blame it on him.
’Damn... I might lose my job.’ Jace lamented slightly.
"Ahem, Captain Jace?" Amidst his distraction, Xu Feng suddenly cleared his throat and called out to him.
"You mind leading the way? We have wasted quite a bit of time because of the guard’s obstruction."
"..."
Wasted quite a bit of time?
Jace wondered why they wasted so much time. Despite feeling frustrated internally, Jace knew better than to pick a fight with Xu Feng.
His mouth was truly poisonous. Just his words alone had made someone faint unconscious from anger and humiliation.
Jace wasn’t a masochist to take his luck and try to experience that.
"Please follow me, Viscount Lin Feng." In the end, Jace gestured for Xu Feng and began leading the way.
This time, there was no hiccup or roadblock anymore.
The only thing that they attracted was their presence.
"Hmm, is that the Viscount who is being accused?"
"It should be him since the Receptionist from Star Falls City is here as well."
"The Viscount looks so young. Could it really be true that he would betray humanity and side with the Colossuses? I can’t imagine throwing away such a prosperous career."
Because of how tremendously Star Falls City had risen, many people had researched and recognized Jessica in a heartbeat.
After all, Jessica’s authority was only beneath that of Howard, who controlled the Adventure Guild branch in Star Falls City.
Therefore, her presence was no different than announcing to the others who Xu Feng was.
It was no secret that Star Falls City was extremely close with the Viscount, but even so, nobody was foolish enough to attempt to tie the two relationships together.
The revenue generated from Star Falls City alone would affect many nobles and people.
To attempt to smear the city was equivalent to cutting off the money tree for many people.
Who would dare poke at a hornet’s nest?
Because of that, Xu Feng was the only accused without any other people being dragged along with him to the hearing.
It was also called a hearing and not a trial because the higher-ups didn’t wish to really antagonize Xu Feng if he was truly innocent.
They could always impose the actual punishment if he was truly proven guilty.
"Did these people pay to spectate?" Xu Feng suddenly asked. "If it were up to me, then I would have sold tickets at a good price to make some money."
Upon hearing that, Jace nearly tripped and stumbled to the ground.
What the heck?
Was that seriously something one should have in mind?
You’re in a trial—hearing, for heaven’s sake!!!
You’re not here for some sightseeing or other things!
"Are you short of money?" While Jace was bewildered by the situation, Jessica turned to him and raised an eyebrow.
As someone who had their pay raised tremendously since the revitalization of the city, she found it hard to believe he was that poor.
But to her absolute disbelief, Xu Feng nodded with a serious look.
"Yes, I’m very short of money." He responded and even extended his hand. "Care to show some charity to the poor and give me like 50,000 gold coins?"
"Scram!" Jessica rolled her eyes and hissed.
"Trying to scam money from this poor woman—" She wanted to complain, but all of a sudden, her eyes widened.
In fact, it wasn’t just her, as everyone else in the crowd was startled by something.
A shadow—no, a person carrying a weapon had closed the distance and was ready to strike at Xu Feng.
"Watch out!" Jace had sensed the killing intent a bit too late, so all he could do was try to warn him of the danger.
After all, nobody expected an assassination attempt in the Royal Court itself.
"DIE, YOU TRAITOR OF HUMANITY!" The assassin flashed a sinister grin as they believed the assassination was going to succeed.
But contrary to his belief, Xu Feng actually turned around and smiled brightly at him.
"I was wondering when you would make a move."
CLANK!
An invisible barrier shrouding Xu Feng had instantly defended itself against the assassin’s attack.
Despite the successful defense, the numerous fissure-like cracks on the barrier made it clear how powerful the attack was.
"Y-You knew??!" The assassin was startled that his action was actually anticipated long ago.
Xu Feng didn’t bother to answer the question. As if he were foolish enough to keep his guards down.
’Duke Marvin is one sinister noble who would rather eliminate threats than keep them around.’ He sneered inwardly. Of course, just because he knew who the culprit behind the assassination was, he would have no way to prove it.
Sometime later, Xu Feng didn’t even need to do anything when guards from the Royal Court had arrived and quickly apprehended the assassin.
Although the assassin had attempted to flee after the failed assassination, Xu Feng made sure to bind them really well.
"You can try to commit suicide, but I must tell you know. I’m a healer, so I can always revive you again and again." He said in a very cheerful tone, causing the assassin to shiver slightly.
Their instinct seemed to be in full panic mode, almost as if they could imagine the torture scene.
As the guards grabbed the assassin and prepared to transport him elsewhere, Xu Feng dropped one final bomb on them.
"Oh, right, the assassin managed to sneak inside a sacred Royal Court to attempt an assassination. That’s quite pathetic of the guard, and even more so if the assassin somehow either escapes or has their life forfeited. At that moment, I would have reasonable doubt to believe this was deliberately done by someone with immense power to silence me before the court hearing."
