Chapter 66: Kids With Quests

Chapter 66: Kids With Quests

"So, I assume that you’ve got a rat killing quest or two to turn in?" Kalli asked the newly arrived students.

"Yeah, we’ve got one for the pig men too. That was a mess, but a bunch of us got the completion. How does this work, anyhow?"

Kalli smiled. "I am Coordinator Kalli, and I am the completion point for quests. Just come close enough and I can cause the completion for you. The usual is a handshake."

One of the older arrivals, also one of their two warriors, stepped forward and noticed Kalli’s casually defensive stance.

"Relax, we’re all Marimgar Alumni here. In fact, I made an observation as I made my way home. Everyone who awakened as a Hero was either a former student or employee of the Academy.

Every Hero in the city is tied to the Academy in some way."

Kalli nodded and shook the man’s hand, giving him the completion for the rat demon and pig man quests, one common and one uncommon mystery box.

He opened them immediately and received a two-handed Uncommon Grade battleaxe, as well as a pair of plate mail pants at Common Grade.

"Now we’re talking. Armoured pants, and a new axe? This thing looks like it can do some real damage."

He stepped aside as the boy who had yelled back at Reggie came forward and grabbed Kalli’s hand in both of his. Then he scrunched his eyes closed, praying for good loot.

Kalli chuckled and winked at the warrior, then patted the boy on the head.

"I hereby bless you with loot. Take it and be enriched."

The others smiled as she patted him like a child, despite being shorter than he was. But the boxes appeared in his hands before he opened his eyes, and he got an amulet of mana regeneration and a staff that added damage to [Fireball].

"Holy crap, it actually works!"

Kalli frowned as she realized that she actually got bonus experience again.

Fine, if that was how the System was, she would play up the theatrics when people came to her to get quests.

At least a few times a day.

Bonus experience was bonus experience, and all.

The next to come forward was a very small girl. Not young. Well, not younger than the other middle school students, but short.

She ran up and gave Kalli a hug, and sighed as Kalli patted her head, then frowned as she realized there was armour under the fancy robes that the Coordinator was wearing.

"Your rewards are ready, Miss."

The girl stepped back and accepted the two boxes, which held a set of black and gold robes in a similar historical style to Kalli’s plus a staff that added an area healing bonus of 1 point to all her healing spells.

That had to be the absolute minimum roll on what might be the most powerful bonus.

But it was something.

"Oh, that is a wonderful staff. Everyone gets a point of healing when I heal. Yes, this will work out very well with that new skill I got."

"New skill?" Kalli asked.

"Yes, from a pig man. It just appeared in my hands when it died. It is a slow heal that heals a bit every second."

Kalli smiled. "Oh, that is a good combination for the staff. Everyone gets one point a second when they’re with you and the tank is recovering. That’s enough to slowly take care of minor injuries for the team, without spending any extra mana or time."

"Oh, I can just put these on with a thought. Can you do that with your robes?"

"Yeah, it works with all the stuff you get from the loot boxes, as long as you have some sort of storage to put your other gear in. You can just keep it stored away and put it on with a thought."

The cleric nodded. "I’ve got a backpack, as the System calls it. It’s about the size of a backpack, too. Not a lot, and I couldn’t put my staff in there. But I can put clothes and some food in there, plus my valuables."

"Well, now you’ve got clothing that you can just change into."

"I don’t suppose that you have..." The healer went silent, and then looked down at herself.

"Clean underwear?" Kalli asked quietly.

The cleric nodded, and Kalli winked at her, then pulled out a pack of size small sports bras and cotton panties from the drugstore looting run.

"Those are on me. The laundry tends to be pretty busy here, but it’s important to keep on top of it before you run out. Oh, that reminds me, you can put those robes in your backpack, and they come back out clean. So that will cut down on your laundry loads."

"Wait, that’s a thing? We’ve all got a backpack, though it took us forever to find out that it existed. If we can just stuff armour in there and have it come out clean before being repaired, that will make things so much easier."

Kalli nodded. "That applies to all loot box items, as well as armour you buy from me directly."

"We can buy armour from you?"

"Did I forget to mention it? Yes, I have a general store for Heroes. You purchase with System Points at a set rate. I can get you most things, from weapons and armour to clothing, housewares and food.

There are food drops from the armoured boars and the dungeon, so the cafeteria relies upon those for most of our food. But if you want to burn points, you can buy other things.

If there are students from the culinary arts track, Gerry is looking for more kitchen help. Cooking meals for others grants experience, so you won’t lose out on progression."

The healer who just got the staff did a little dance, and the older warrior sighed.

"Dammit, I should have known it was too good to be true. Now she’ll never leave the kitchen."

"Well, there are multiple shifts in a day. There is still time to go out for a few hours to do a dungeon or a quest run. Gerry doesn’t get many System Points, just experience. So, going out as a healer to do quests and then cooking after is the best way forward."

"Oh, that’s an option? Yes, that might work."

The little cleric wasn’t even listening to them, she was grabbing two of the boys and pulling them forward.

"Can we do these guys next? Then we can go see Mister Gerry. He was our foods class Teacher’s Assistant last semester."

"Alright, come forward, and then you can all head to the kitchen. He will be happy to see familiar faces."
