Chapter 65: Work Contracts
Chapter 65: Work Contracts
Kalli pulled up the contracts, and the group that was working at the Academy all took the time to read them properly.
It was clear that they could see the issues with the Scullery Maid contract, which had mandatory 14-hour workdays on top of its extremely low pay. That one was more of a punishment than anything, but the other contracts all appeared to be relatively fair.
They even forbid the employer from mandating overtime.
"Well, none of us have any System Skills or System Points, but this seems to think that it is possible we might gain them later, since it says that you can only sign [Commoners] as employees and not [Heroes], and that a change of status nullifies the contract.
The group is going to go nuts when they hear that is possible.
So, while it might suck that the System puts us at the bottom of society, at least we’ve got a chance to get something good from it.
I think that I will sign as a maid because Domestic Helper has a bunch of extra job duties beyond cleaning, and I’m not really qualified to be caring for the infirm."
The other cleaners that they had hired nodded their agreement.
They were here to clean, they weren’t live in nurses. Though there were a few at the apartment who had been before all of this, so they might sign up for it and work at whatever passed for a medical bay here.
"How do we even sign these?" The door guard asked, confused by the situation.
"Just place your thumb against the image in front of you and say that you accept the contract. That should do as proof," Kalli suggested, not entirely certain herself.
The screen flashed gold as he pressed his hand to it and said the simple acceptance phrase.
"I accept your job offer."
The others followed immediately after, and Kalli noticed that her System Points immediately dropped. Not by much, five points, but that would likely be the pay for these employees for the day.
That was a win in their eyes, as now they had points to spend.
And points to spend meant food that they could bring back home today. Not later, not because of charity. But because they spent their wages to get what the group needed.
"While we have points, can we get some supplies again? What is cheap?"
Kalli shrugged at the maid’s question. "Well, there are potatoes, which are half the price of rice. Actually, you can get sacks of most vegetables for half the price of rice. Don’t ask me why that is."
The big guard chuckled. "Likely because rice is life. They know we need it, and no other food is a real substitute."
The ladies all rolled their eyes, then laughed at the big man’s complaint. Indeed, he could not function without rice. But the same could be said of him and beer until a few days ago, when a midnight attack reminded them all that there was no real "off duty" time where you could let your guard down.
"In that case, we need a sack of potatoes, one of carrots and one of onions. Then, if we’ve got points left, some butter."
Kalli nodded. "If you’re pooling everyone’s daily salary, you’ve got five points. That’s four, but a sack of rice is two."
The guard made a mock pained sound. But getting ingredients for soup was much more productive.
"One more sack of potatoes. They’re good for a soup base, and we’ve still got plenty of spices."
Kalli turned over the supplies and took back their credits, then Gerry came over with a wrapped package.
"Some boar meat bacon. It’ll help fill everyone, even with a thin soup, and the fat will add flavour. Good work today, and I suppose that I’ll see you tomorrow, since you’re officially employed now."
That had slipped the minds of the staff here.
They had intended to switch once a week, so that others could earn their keep as well, and nobody would feel useless. But with an official contract, it couldn’t be swapped around like that.
They could likely get more people hired, or paid informally at the same rate as the contract, but these jobs were officially theirs.
The sound of movement outside the Academy walls caught their attention, and the guards whistled to get the gates closed, while the apartment across the street locked down and hid, hoping that they weren’t noticed.
Kalli jogged up the wall, in case these were people who had noticed the quests.
Her range had just expanded as she reached level three, so there would have been at least a few more people who got the quests, and the System had no issue giving away her position.
The group looked young enough that they could be mostly students of the grade school, but they certainly weren’t dressed like students.
Actually, they looked more like some sort of child army from a dystopian movie, using kitchenware as weapons and armour.
"Hey, let us in! We’ve got a quest to be here. We’re heroes dammit!" One of the boys shouted.
"What’s the password?" Reggie shouted back from behind the gates.
"Fuck you Reggie!"
Kalli shrugged. "That sounds like a password to me."
"Who else is there with you?" Kalli asked.
"We found more people who became heroes. We were set up in the police station by Honey Crown and Redhill. It’s as secure as anything we were likely to find, but there were no police.
It was like they cleared the place out beforehand."
Kalli laughed. "They all came here to keep the students safe, only everyone went and ran off before they arrived. It was just my class here when they showed up with the army to secure the Academy."
Reggie opened the gates, but Kalli noticed that everyone had their armour on, unless it was in for repairs.
Just because there were a few students with them didn’t mean whoever else they found wasn’t here with bad intentions. After everything that had happened, they were all feeling paranoid about being raided.
Especially since these people now knew Kalli could give them rewards.
"How many are you?" Kalli asked, though she already had a pretty good count.
"Fifteen in total. We’ve got five healers with us, eight mages, but only two warriors. It made moving through the streets difficult. Those rat things are too fast, and they keep going for the mages."
