Chapter 1870: Press Conference

Chapter 1870: Press Conference

The public relations head was a bald wood elf with a sharp eye that put Ning through a blender with the questions and answers he had him prepare for the entire day. Since Ning arrived at the Star Hero Agency early in the morning, by the time it was evening, Ning had to have gone through at least 5 separate mock press conferences, not counting the countless breaks they had to take where Ning kept messing up one way or another.

Don’t look directly into the cameras. Keep your head straight. Don’t use filler words. Try not to look at the pamphlet before you. Take pauses between each sentence. Don’t say this. Don’t say that. Don’t do this. Don’t put your hands to the side.

Ning had to go through a million different things before the head could be happy with the result they had gotten.

Ning was then taken away in a hurry by the cosmetic department, where he was placed into his suit, along with a new mask created from the broken mask he had brought back.

The top half was trimmed a bit, allowing for his hair to slip out of it. The contours of his eyes were more pronounced now and some holes had been cut into it to reveal his eyes.

The broken design on the bottom was kept, albeit changed a little so it didn’t look random. And the two black upside-down triangles, the ’Fangs’ of the Blackfang, were kept as well.

Once Ning was all prepared, he was finally allowed to go to the venue where the press conference was taking place.

The conference was being held in a massive hotel, with nearly 200 seats filled to the brim and more standing in the back as they watched. Cold air blew through the air vents as excitement heated up everyone.

Over a dozen microphones were placed on the podium, waiting for someone to speak into it.

“I’ll introduce you. Come out after I call for you,” Tyler Gurmac, the Star Hero Agency president, said and walked out into the conference room.

The place burst with clamor as murmurs and sounds of flashing cameras filled the room. The man held a bright smile on his face as he turned toward everyone, waiting for them to stop.

“If I may have your attention. I am Tyler Gurmac, the president of Star Hero Agency. Precisely 10 days ago, the strongest yet measured awakening in current history was recorded at our own city’s Department of Power and Abilities. Just 3 hours later, we were on our way to signing said person into our agency.”

“Just 5 days after that, he took the test for a hero license. And 5 days after that, here we stand, at the precipice of a new era, no doubt to be led by him.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, I want you all to welcome. Our. Greatest. Hero. Yet. BLACKFANG!”

The doors opened and Ning walked out.

Flashing lights were all Ning could see as the cameras overwhelmed the entire room. He could hear nothing but the sound of shutters along with an incoherent murmur that seemed to fill the entire room.

He held a warm smile on his face, just as he was taught, and walked up to the president. He gave the man a firm shake and took over his spot before the microphones.

He smiled for a few more seconds, turning his head around so everyone in the group could get a good look at him. Once the crowd stopped being so loud, he started speaking.

“I want to thank the president and all of you for your warm welcome. I am Blackfang…”

Ning repeated every word he had rote into his mind after the entire day of practice. No word came out wrong. He stopped at every period. And never did he let his smile falter.

The words he said made him seem to be a righteous man on the path of justice that was willing to let no harm come to the civilians so long as he was around.

It gave Ning a strange bit of déjà vu, as the oath that Valen had to take to become a detective was in some ways the same.

“…and I promise you. The name Blackfang will be a brightness in this city, removing shadows from the dark and bringing everyone to the light.”

Ning’s speech lasted about 2 minutes in total, during which everyone stayed silent as they let him speak. Once it ended, the flashes started all over again.

The president stepped forward and leaned into the microphones before saying, “You may ask any questions you have.”

Hands shot up faster than a child’s would when asked who wanted candy and ice cream.

Ning had the privilege of choosing, so he chose at random, pointing to the person.

“Jack Doggery, The Limaro News. Everyone wants to hear about your powers. What can you tell us?”

“Well, I must admit, Jack. I cannot so easily tell you about my powers, as it is one of those secrets that makes it easier for me to protect others. The fewer people who know what I can do, the harder it will be for the criminals to prepare for me.”

“However,” he quickly continued. “I can tell you two things.”

“First, I can transform into a giant bat.”

Ning took a few steps back and suddenly, his body transformed into a giant bat in front of everyone. He walked around a bit, showing off his body, before transforming back into his human form.

“I can transform for as long as I want, and it also allows me to fly. I have already received my flying license as well. And secondly…”

He pointed toward the projector screen that was at the back of the conference room that suddenly came to life. “I have had the misfortune of being targeted by someone a while ago. Someone very dangerous, who I had to go after. This was the aftermath of that battle.”

A video played, one that captured the scene from when he killed Talia.
