Chapter 1810: A Break-in
Chapter 1810: A Break-in
Ning searched around the bed until he found a rectangular phone on the side. He quickly looked at the name ’Larissa’, remembering a face. That was the detective he was helping with the case.
He picked it up.
“Hello?”
“Where the fuck are you?” the woman’s voice came with a scream from the other side.
“In my apartment. Why?” Ning asked.
“Why? There’s been a break-in. Why else?” the woman said. “If you’re gonna work, pick your damn phone on time. Now come down quickly.”
’Down?’ Ning quickly walked out the door and saw a blue van waiting below.
He quickly locked the door, kept the keys and walked in his jacket as if it were a habit, and quickly ran down the front staircase to arrive before the van. The memories of the man who he had replaced were giving him instincts on things as if he had been doing this for a long time.
The van door opened at the front and he climbed in. A woman sat in the driver’s seat, with slightly red skin and amber eyes. Her hair was dark, draping down the side of her face like curtains.
Ning knew what she was from just the look.
An Infernal. A mix between an Imp and any other race.
“Took you bloody damn long,” she said.
“I was sleeping.”
“You’re a fucking Vampire, you don’t need to sleep.”
“Daywalker. Please get your facts right,” Ning said. “That would be the same as…”
He saw the woman’s eyes burn with fury. It was better not to say what he was about to say.
“Anyway, what’s going on, Mira?” Ning asked.
“A break-in was reported at an apartment in the northeast district,” answered a young woman from the back. She had short brown hair, but she covered it with a large beanie, revealing only the two pointed ears on her head.
Wood Elf.
Seeing her reminded Ning of Valen’s wife. She was an Elf too, a High-Elf at that. There were so few of them in this world, with most remaining in their own tiny island nation in the south.
The Wood Elf was on a computer, looking up some information.
“Any news if there’s been any other altercation?” Ning asked.
“Jack went on ahead to gather the other information,” Mira said. “But we do know that an older man was hurt and had some items stolen.”
Ning nodded. He had been so thoroughly thrown into something he had no idea about, that he could just wait and see what would happen next.
“Did you see the news?” Mira asked from the back. “Power Fist was soooo cool. The way she punched that meteor. She’s such a good hero. If not for her, we can only imagine how many people would’ve died.”
“No one would’ve died,” Ning said. “The meteor would’ve been destroyed to smithereens just from the friction against the atmosphere. What she did was needless.”
Mira gasped. “Saying that is discrediting Power Fist’s hard work. You’re no different from the trolls online, sir Valen.”
“I’m not trying to troll. I’m just telling the truth. She didn’t have to do all of that. Besides, Power Fist can’t fly, right? Who took her up there?”
“Senior Soar, of course,” Mira said. “Did you not see him sending her up there?”
“Did he? I must’ve missed it. The view from my apartment blocked most of it,” Ning said.
“Oh? I thought you were asleep,” the Infernal said with narrowed eyes.
“I woke up to use the bathroom,” Ning said quickly. “I went back to sleep right after and missed the calls.”
“Yeah, right.”
’What is her problem?’ Ning thought, but he knew what her problem was.
The young detective didn’t like that she had to babysit him at every moment, take him to crime scenes with her and let him interfere with her work. But since it was the chief’s order, she had to follow without question.
They arrived at the scene, a building with more floors than Ning could count at a glance. A few police cruisers filled the outside, with some police tape marking a perimeter around the entryway.
Dwarves, Orcs, Lizardfolk, Beastmen, Human—all sorts of people of various races were gathered there, trying to learn more of what was happening.
“The break-in was where?” Ning asked, looking up at the building.
“The 6th-floor apartment,” a voice came from before him. Jack had been at the scene longer than the rest, so he had gathered some information.
The young man had a strong face like that of a dragon with a much smaller, human snout. He had two horns growing out the side of his head, pointed backward, making him look slick.
He was a Dragonborn.
Larissa walked out the other side and pulled out her badge, showing it to a cop that was to the side, and walked in. Ning and Mira pulled out their badges too and showed them before walking in.
“The victim is Grimhide Chak, an old male Ghoul of 62 years. He was found lying unconscious in his apartment after the cops went in to check on the apartment after a call from the neighbor.”
“The neighbor, a 45-year-old Satyr, Sana, says she heard sounds of glass shattering from the other room. When she went to check, she heard muffled sounds from inside. She called the cops when she didn’t get a response from the old man.”
“How’s the old man?” Larissa asked.
“Unconscious, but alive,” Jack said. “He has blunt force trauma to the back of the head. At that age, it’s a surprise he didn’t die.”
“Well… he is a ghoul, so some physical durability is expected,” the woman said. They walked into an elevator, and Jack pressed the button for Floor 6.
“Any info on the robbers?” she asked.
“No, none yet. We’re trying to see what was stolen, but… everything is a mess so it will take some time to know,” Jack answered.
“Alright,” she said, turning toward Ning. “Mr. Great Detective, you’re up.”
