Chapter 1809: Valen Jassens
Chapter 1809: Valen Jassens
“Great!” Ning said. “Do you have any last thing you want to do within this world? Any last wishes before I send you to the other world?”
“I’m not dying, am I?” the man asked.
“No, just another planet,” Ning said.
The man thought with a solemn silence. “There is nothing I want from this life. I have no wishes, nothing. But, there is one thing I should do before I leave. If you would indulge me.”
“Sure. What do you want to do?”
Ning accepted the man’s request and took him somewhere else. When they arrived, they were standing before a cemetery.
In the middle of the night, there was no one at the cemetery, except for one here or there in the distance.
The man walked in on his own, navigating the complex landscape until he arrived before a few gravestones.
Ning didn’t ask who they were for and simply stood to the side, letting the man grieve for whatever loss he had suffered.
He looked around the place, seeing many graves. They had dates marked on them, with some born as early as Year 208 and some dying as late as Year 334. The ones on the graves before the man had died in Year 328.
He wondered what the current year was.
Ning waited for a while, watching someone pass by the place. It was a tabaxi woman—a humanoid feline—of the leopard variant. She wore a regular gravekeeper’s cloak, walking away.
Ning was a little surprised to see a woman that was a half-cat, half-man.
’Is that a power she gained?’ he thought for a moment before shaking his head. ’No, she must be of that race. Right, there are many races. Tabaxi must be one of them.’
It was a while before the man stood up to leave.
“Are you ready to leave?” Ning asked.
The man nodded. “Yes, I’m ready. Send me anywhere you want.”
Ning smiled and took the man into his Inner World, sending him to Earth. Earth was now an advanced world with both Qi and Mana fueling the two halves, so he would do fine.
The man would arrive on a coastal island that used to be part of Japan, and is now part of a federation called the Blind Heaven. There were multiple such federations, covering even more provinces.
The Blind Heaven federation was one of the weaker provinces, so he would have an easier time starting there.
The man might end up needing some help still, so he asked Emma to send someone to help him for a bit until he was used to it.
There were hundreds of individuals back in the closed-off space that was Ning’s home that would love to take on that adventure.
Having dealt with the man, Ning now needed to change into him. He was going to take over the man’s absence and continue. This was a simple idea to integrate into the society.
He looked around, making sure he wasn’t watched. ’Give me the man’s physical features and memories,’ he asked the system.
<Done!>
Suddenly, Ning’s body shifted, including his clothes, to that of what the man had been wearing. He also gained memories of the man as well, immediately knowing certain things.
The man’s name was Valen Jassens. He was 37 years old, with no family or friends. He used to be in the police force and was even a well-renowned detective in the city. But after a tragic night when both his wife and son were murdered in his own house—with absolutely no evidence of who had done it at all—he spiraled down into despair and depression, and eventually dropped out of the police force.
For the past 5 years, he had gotten worse and worse, and was at an end point of his life. He was at a state where a weaker man would’ve likely released himself of this pain.
But the man had persevered. He was strong.
He had one friend still. At least, his friend considered Valen a friend. It was the new police chief, who wanted to help him get his life in order.
So, he had asked him to help in a few cases here and there.
The man had wanted to improve his life, so he accepted the offer. But every day, watching more and more cases of people dying was leading him down the same state again.
He tried his best, but it wasn’t working.
It was in fact getting worse.
The more crimes he solved, the deeper his despair became for not solving the one crime that mattered. He was guilt-ridden to the brim and wanted to get away from it all.
He was fine living with the guilt, but he did not want it to get any worse.
That was the reason he had chosen to accept Ning’s offer.
Maybe somewhere else, he would have a chance at life.
Ning looked toward the grave. He remembered the beautiful face of the woman in his memory, the eyes of the son that wasn’t even 3 years old. Even he felt the man’s pain.
’Don’t worry,’ Ning said silently. ’I will take care of your family’s murderers before I leave.’
Year 334 was the latest year in the new calendar, so the two had been dead for the past 6 years. Ning tried to see if he could gain anything more from his memories, but there truly was no clue left behind at all.
The two were simply dead, poisoned by a compound that none of the forensic experts of the city had been able to identify. It was a real mystery.
Ning sighed. He needed to stop thinking about this all. That was for later. For now, he needed to learn more about this world and what he had come here to do.
He looked around at the cemetery and decided to leave the place immediately. He arrived back at the room and sat on the bed.
He was about to ask the system some more questions when he heard a sound.
Something was ringing.
