Chapter 1770: Assassins

Chapter 1770: Assassins

It was clear that assassins would come at the dead of the night, so everyone prepared for it.

Ning stayed on the roof of a house with his black and red spear in his hand, and his Life Sense active at all moments.

Shara remained within the house, holding her golden spear, ready for the assassins. She was protected by Matthew and a few other soldiers.

The scouts were out doing their job, each one of whom was on the lookout for assassins as well. They were trained in the arts of assassination as well, so they were more than capable of handling themselves.

Romus was the only person that stayed away from the group, staying alone on top of a large structure closer to the city’s center, surrounded by all of his undead soldiers. He had asked to be alone himself.

Something suddenly flew toward Ning and struck him in the head. The object passed through Ning, crashing onto a building on the other side. The Ning that sat on the roof suddenly turned illusory and disappeared.

In the distance, the real Ning, sitting hidden in the corner in darkness, smiled as he pet the Luminous Lemming. “They have come.”

A fog appeared at once, gathering around the undead from where Romus stood, slowly spreading further out to cover the entire region.

At the same time, sounds of battle rang out from out in the surroundings as the scouts began fights of their own.

Ning sensed two people arriving on the roof and furthermore down below. They all wore dark clothes and seemed to hide in the shadows.

Ning struck the butt of his spear onto the roof, letting the others know that the assassins had landed around their perimeter.

Ning held up the spear, ready to fight.

The lemming jumped off his shoulders and immediately glowed as brightly as would a sun. Ning was the only one who knew not to look at it at that moment, so the others were immediately blinded.

The black-clothed figures stood out in the bright light. Ning immediately moved toward them and stabbed one through the head. The other swung his dagger, forcing Ning to move backward.

But Ning only did what he had to in order to not get cut. Even though he could turn his body into iron, he needed to be careful, just in case the man had some special powers that he could have no idea about.

Ning stepped forward, stabbing at the assassin’s neck, but the assassin could see him coming by now. He was used to the bright light, so he immediately struck Ning’s spear with his dagger, before throwing one toward him.

Ning struck the incoming dagger with the butt of his spear, stopping its advancement. He hit the falling dagger with the shaft of the spear, keeping it in the air, before spinning around as he slammed the dagger in the air, throwing it back toward the assassin.

The assassin scrambled to dodge the dagger, and in doing so, left himself open to the spear.

Ning’s spear stabbed through the assassin’s neck, the twin horns coming out of the side of the spear stabbing into him as well. The assassin tried to grab onto his neck, but Ning pulled the spear back, letting the blood spill out of the wound.

The assassin fidgeted on the ground for a few seconds before succumbing to eternal slumber.

“That’s enough,” Ning said and the lemming stopped glowing. “You can return.”

The lemming flew back into his bracelet and the night returned to darkness once again. As it did, two more assassins arrived on the roof, each one more prepared than the first two.

There was barely enough light to see in the darkness, but Ning was able to do what he did thanks to his Life Sense. As he focused on it, one of the assassins suddenly turned into 20 separate beings.

Ning couldn’t tell what it was from the Life Sense alone, but when he heard the flapping of the wings and the high-pitched noise, he could tell that the man had turned into a colony of bats.

The bats landed all around him, perhaps either trying to bite him or just distract him. The other assassin ran toward him as well, seemingly wanting to take the opportunity to kill him.

However, Ning disappointed both of them.

Ning’s body turned into iron, which immediately stopped the bats from doing anything to him at all. At the same time, he stabbed toward the second assassin.

That assassin seemed to notice the change and stopped immediately, sidestepping the stab.

Ning continued with the stab, swinging it to the side to catch the man, but the man dodged backward, feeling slight dread at the fact that he had nearly died.

Seeing as they could not do anything, the bats tried to distract Ning or simply make him unable to hear or see things.

Ning let them fly around his face, letting them think they had the upper hand. The other assassin came back to attack at the same time.

Ning waited until the last moment before suddenly dropping to the floor and kicking at the assassin’s ankle.

As the assassin stumbled and fell, Ning stabbed upward with his spear, lodging it through the man’s jaw, right into his skull.

Something dripped from the man’s palm, which Ning dodged and moved backward. He looked toward the group of bats and saw how they tried to flee from the location in the darkness of the night.

But they flew as a group and they were all within his Life Sense.

Ning dropped his spear and pulled out a scroll before opening it immediately, targeting the group of bats.

Instantly, a massive fireball flew out of the scroll and flew in the direction of the bats, reaching them in a snap.

The bats did not have the time to even see what was happening when the attack landed on them. Before they knew it, the bats had all burned away, and from them appeared the corpse of a burnt assassin.
