Reincarnated as a Slave, I Built the Strongest Empire
Chapter 34: Second Wind
I ran.
The eastern connector paths blurred under my boots as the rapid-response team kept formation behind me. Lira matched my pace on the left, spear ready. The rest of the fighters moved in tight order, the recent drills showing in their silence and spacing. Horns continued to sound from the northern markers, overlapping and urgent. This was no probe.
As we moved I pulled up the system and allocated the points I had banked from the previous level.
[Attribute Allocation]
[Strength +2]
[Agility +2]
[Phantom Edge Cooldown Reduction +1]
[Phantom Edge Cooldown: 24 hours → 20 hours]
Not the reduction I wanted, but better than nothing. The increased strength settled into my arms and core like denser muscle, agility sharpened the way my feet found purchase on the wet planks. I would need both.
The first bodies appeared before we reached the main northern platforms, rebel and orc alike, floating in the channels and sprawled across broken walkways. The scale of the fighting ahead became clear with every step. Smoke mixed with the mist. The sounds of metal and screaming carried on the wet air.
We hit the edge of the engagement at a dead run.
The orcs here were different from the earlier scouting parties. Heavier armor. Better weapons. Coordinated groups rather than loose raiders. They fought with the focused aggression of soldiers who had been ordered to break a position completely. This was not harassment. This was an attempt to smash the northern approach and open the way into the heart of the outpost.
"Form on me!" I shouted. "Hit the flanks, then fall back to the next solid platform. Do not get drawn into the center!"
We slammed into the side of one advancing cluster. Brutal Strike took the first orc through the neck in a single heavy cut. The new strength behind the blow nearly took the head clean off. I pivoted, used the momentum to drive the second backward, and finished him with a thrust under the arm. Lira’s spear flashed beside me, taking a third through the thigh and then the throat as he fell.
[You have slain Level 6 Orc Shock Trooper. +26 XP]
[You have slain Level 5 Orc Shock Trooper. +19 XP]
The team followed the opening, cutting into the disordered edge of the enemy group. For a moment the pressure eased. Then more orcs poured in from the mist further out, and the weight of numbers reasserted itself.
They were stronger than the previous waves. Better trained. Several carried thick shields that turned aside ordinary cuts. I had to commit harder to each exchange, using the improved strength to batter through guards and the extra agility to stay ahead of return swings.
Lira took a heavy shield bash to the side that staggered her. An orc with a notched axe immediately pressed the opening. I abandoned my current opponent and intercepted the axe mid-swing, the impact jarring my arms. The orc snarled and shoved forward. I killed him with a short, brutal sequence, but the moment of divided attention cost me.
A second warrior came from my blind side and drove a spear tip into the meat of my left shoulder. Pain exploded down the arm.
[Warning: Host has taken damage HP: 81]
I snarled, twisted, and used Brutal Strike to cave in his chest. Blood ran freely down my sleeve. Lira recovered and put her spear through another orc trying to exploit the same gap. Our eyes met for a fraction of a second. No words were needed at that moment, and we immediately kept fighting.
The line began to buckle under the pressure. My team was good, better than they had been only days earlier, but the enemy kept coming. Stamina drained faster than I liked under the constant, high-intensity exchanges. Every time I created space, more orcs filled it. The realization settled cold and clear: if this continued without reinforcement, the rebellion might collapse entirely.
I pushed harder.
Arcane Guard activated on pure instinct when a heavy maul came down in a two-handed overhead strike. The skill hardened the space around me and took a significant portion of the force, but not enough. The residual impact still drove me to one knee and sent a deep, sickening throb through my ribs and shoulder.
[Arcane Guard – Partial Mitigation]
[HP: 64%]
[Stamina: 58%]
I forced myself up and killed the maul-wielder with a rising cut that opened him from hip to armpit. The new strength made the blow decisive, but everything was beginning to slow. My breathing came ragged. The edges of my vision tightened. Around me the team was being forced into a smaller and smaller defensive knot.
An orc slipped past the thinning line and lunged at Lira’s exposed back while she was engaged with two others. I saw it too late to intercept cleanly. I still threw myself forward, shoving her aside and taking the spear point across the lower ribs instead.
[Critical Warning: Host has taken damage]
[HP: 41%]
The pain was bright and immediate. I killed the orc on pure reflex, but the damage was accumulating too fast. Stamina reserves continued to fall. Another heavy warrior closed in, sensing weakness. I raised my sword to meet him and knew I was a fraction too slow.
The killing blow never landed.
A blur of motion cut across my vision. The orc’s head left his shoulders in a clean, almost delicate arc of blood. The body stood for a heartbeat longer before collapsing.
Veyra stepped into the space as if she had always been there.
Her sword was a long, slightly curved blade with a pale blue edge that left faint afterimages in the air. The weapon carried a clear magical attribute, each cut seemed to borrow a fraction of the target’s momentum and return it as added force on the following strike. The effect stacked in rapid exchanges, turning her already precise style into something devastating. She moved with economy and lethal grace, never wasting a step or a swing. Where my fighting was built on aggression, timing, and hard-won brutality, hers was refined to a level I had not seen in this world.
She killed three more orcs in the space of a few breaths, each motion flowing into the next. The pressure on our collapsing knot eased immediately as the nearest enemies reoriented toward the greater threat.
I forced myself upright, blood running freely from the wound across my ribs. The difference in ability was obvious. Veyra was operating on a plane above my current level, cleaner, faster, and far more efficient. Even with the recent attribute gains and Arcane Guard, I could not match the sheer polished lethality of her work.
"On your feet, Antoine," she said without looking at me. Her blade took another orc’s arm at the elbow and then his throat on the return. "I did not come here to watch you die on your knees."
I spat blood and raised my sword again. "Working on it."
Together we turned the local fight. Veyra carved through the heavier threats with that momentum-stealing blade while I and the remaining members of the rapid-response team cleaned up the lesser orcs trying to reform. Lira fought on my left, bloodied but upright. The improved strength and agility let me finish wounded enemies quickly and move to the next without the same degree of overcommitment as before.
The northern push in our sector finally broke. The surviving orcs pulled back into the deeper mist, leaving their dead behind. The walkways were slick with blood and littered with bodies. Smoke drifted low across the water.
I stood amid the aftermath, sword tip resting against the planks, and felt the last of my stamina give out. The system notifications stacked as the immediate combat high began to fade.
[You have slain multiple enemies]
[Total XP gained from engagement: significant]
[Level Up! You have reached Level 9]
[+5 Attribute Points available]
[New Skill Acquired: Momentum Break (Active) – Briefly disrupt an opponent’s balance and forward force on successful timed contact]
[New Ability Unlocked: Second Wind (Passive) – Once per day, when HP falls below 25%, automatically restore a portion of stamina and temporarily increase damage resistance]
The surge of the level-up knitted the worst of the wounds and flooded my limbs with renewed strength, but the cumulative exhaustion of the fight and the loss of blood still dragged at me. My vision narrowed at the edges. The last thing I registered clearly was Veyra issuing rapid orders to the surviving fighters and Lira’s hand closing around my uninjured arm.
Then the marsh, the voices and everything else tilted sideways and went dark.
