Reincarnated as a Slave, I Built the Strongest Empire
Chapter 33: The Opening
The northern channels had already become a killing ground by the time Elandor and Harlan reached them.
Smoke from burning reed bundles mixed with the thick marsh mist. Bodies floated in the shallow water or lay twisted across the wooden walkways. The outer defensive positions had collapsed under the weight of a coordinated assault. What remained of the rebel defenders were being driven back toward the secondary platforms in scattered, bleeding groups.
Then the main force came into view.
Dozens of orcs moved through the mist in disciplined clusters. Not the loose probes of previous days. These were heavier warriors, many wearing reinforced leather and scavenged metal plates. Several carried thick shields. Others wielded two-handed axes and mauls still wet with blood. Behind them, more shapes advanced. The scale of the attack was immediately clear. This was no raid. It was an attempt to smash the northern approach entirely.
Elandor did not slow.
The old mage stepped onto the widest stretch of walkway overlooking the advancing line and raised both hands. The air around him changed. A deep pressure built, as if the marsh itself had drawn breath and held it.
Harlan felt it instantly, a vast, controlled gathering of power that made his own strength feel suddenly small.
Elandor spoke a single hard word and the world answered.
A wall of white-hot flame erupted across the front of the orc advance, stretching from one side of the channel to the other. The fire did not behave like ordinary flame. It clung to armor and flesh with unnatural hunger, turning the first rank into thrashing, screaming torches. At the same time, the water beneath the walkways surged upward under Elandor’s will, forming thick spears of ice that punched through the second line and pinned warriors in place so the fire could finish them.
The display was overwhelming.
Harlan stood frozen for a heartbeat, the raw scale of it hammering into him. He had known his uncle was a mage of significant ability. He had never seen him unleash his power without restraint. This was not the careful, measured support Elandor had shown in previous skirmishes. This was dominance.
The orcs reeled but did not break. A larger warrior near the center, scarred, heavily muscled, carrying a massive iron-bound maul bellowed orders. The surviving clusters reformed and pushed forward through the dying flames, using the bodies of their own fallen as partial cover.
Elandor’s expression remained cold. He shifted his stance and brought both hands down sharply.
The wooden walkway directly in front of the advancing wedge exploded upward under a violent surge of kinetic force and earth magic. Planks, support posts, and mud erupted in a deadly spray. Several orcs were launched into the air. Others vanished into the suddenly opened gaps and the dark water below. Before the dust settled, Elandor sent a cascading arc of lightning through the disrupted formation. Blue-white energy chained from one metal weapon and armor plate to the next, dropping another handful of warriors in convulsing heaps.
Harlan’s heart pounded. The core inside his chest pulsed in resonance with the power being unleashed around him, as if recognizing a greater source.
"Move!" Elandor’s voice cut through the roar of battle without the tone of a teacher. It was the command of a man in the middle of a killing field. "Left side. Do not let them flank the ramp!"
Harlan snapped into motion.
He thrust both hands forward and poured power into a concentrated kinetic barrage. The force lances tore into the orcs attempting to swing around the destroyed section of walkway. Two dropped immediately with shattered chests. A third lost an arm and fell screaming into the water. Harlan kept advancing, releasing shorter, harder bursts that cracked shields and broke bones. Each successful strike fed a fierce, rising satisfaction. This was what the emptiness inside him had always lacked. Immediate, destructive consequence.
An orc with a notched great-axe broke through the edge of his assault and swung in a heavy horizontal arc. Harlan threw a hasty barrier of force between them. The axe struck it with a deep, resonant boom. The barrier held, but the impact drove Harlan back a step and sent a spike of strain through the still-settling channels of his core. He snarled and answered by dropping the barrier and driving a point-blank concussive blast into the orc’s face. The warrior’s head snapped backward with a wet crunch and the body toppled.
More were coming.
Elandor fought as though the marsh itself were an extension of his body. When a cluster of shielded orcs tried to form a tight advance, he opened the water beneath them and dragged them under with crushing hydrokinetic force, holding them there until their struggles ceased. When another group attempted to use the smoke for cover, he summoned a howling crosswind that stripped the concealment away and then ignited the air itself in a brief, blinding flash that left the front ranks charred and blind. Earth, fire, water, force, and lightning answered him in rapid, brutal succession. There was nothing tentative in his work. Every casting carried the weight of long mastery.
Harlan watched between his own engagements and felt something close to awe cut through the battle-heat. This was the standard. This was what true magical power looked like when refined over decades and then fully released. His own core, newly seeded and still awkward in its responses, suddenly felt like a crude beginning rather than a finished weapon.
Yet it was a beginning with potential.
He could feel it. Every time he drew deeply, the bloodline amplification answered with greater density than before. The lances formed faster. The barriers solidified with less conscious effort. The upper limits of what he could output had not yet been reached, he sensed that clearly, even if control and endurance still lagged behind.
A fresh wave of orcs smashed into their position from the right, attempting to cut them off from the inner platforms. Harlan turned to meet them with a wide, sweeping wave of force that hurled the first several backward. Two more closed the gap. He caught the spear of the first on a hastily formed barrier, then used the rebound to drive a kinetic spike through the second warrior’s midsection. Blood sprayed across the planks. He pivoted and smashed the first orc’s knee sideways with a focused burst, then finished him with a downward strike of pure force that caved in the helmet and the skull beneath.
Breath came hard now. Sweat and blood mixed on his face. The core throbbed with a deep, warning heat, but it still responded when he called. He was stronger than he had been at the start of the fight. He could feel the growth even in the middle of the slaughter.
Elandor appeared at his side again, hands wreathed in alternating fire and crackling energy. Together they broke the attempted flanking force in a coordinated storm of elemental violence. Fire drove the orcs into tighter clusters. Lightning and kinetic force finished them. Ice rose from the channels to block retreat. The old mage’s power never seemed to falter. Harlan’s own output began to show the edges of fatigue, but he refused to ease off.
The battle across the northern approach reached its peak in a final, grinding push. The remaining orc forces committed everything they had left in an attempt to overrun the secondary platforms before reinforcements could fully consolidate. Elandor met the center of that push with a devastating combination—first a rolling wave of earth and shattered wood that disrupted their footing, then a concentrated storm of fire and force that turned the front ranks into a charnel ruin. Harlan supported the flanks with repeated kinetic barrages, each one more focused than the last as he learned the rhythm of true battle casting under pressure.
When the last organized cluster broke and the survivors began fleeing into the deeper mist, the walkways were littered with the dead. The water ran dark. The air stank of burnt flesh, blood, and ozone.
Harlan stood amid the carnage, chest heaving, hands still faintly glowing with residual power.
Elandor’s breathing was elevated, but his control remained absolute. Scorch marks and blood spattered his robes. His eyes, however, carried the cold satisfaction of a mage who had just reminded the battlefield why experienced power still mattered.
Harlan wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and let out a rough breath. "I didn’t know you could fight like that."
Elandor glanced at him. "Most never need to see it. Today required it."
Harlan looked down at his own hands, flexing the fingers as the last traces of power faded from the skin. The gap between them was still vast. But for the first time he could feel the path that might eventually narrow it.
"I can go further," Harlan said, more to himself than to Elandor.
The old mage studied him for a moment amid the settling smoke and the groans of the wounded. "You will. If you survive long enough to learn control. Today was only the opening."
