Reincarnated as a Lizard
Chapter 591: Who’s Behind the Chaos...?
"What is happening?" As Scaly and Verdell began cutting a bloody path through the vast sea of snow wolves surrounding the city, one of the adventurers surrounded by the stronger snow wolves outside the city, noticed the sudden change in her opponents. Sensing that something had disturbed them and caused them to lower the intensity of their attacks. Instead, shifting that attention elsewhere.
"No idea, but from the looks of things, it should be good news for us."
"Indeed, if those snow wolves shift their attention elsewhere, we might get a chance to break through the deadlock and get to the city. Even if we can’t get inside with the magical barrier fully raised, we would at least be able to rely on it covering our backs to better fight these damnable snow wolves."
"Haha, I hope so."
And in response to her own confused muttering, the rest of the adventurers similarly picked up on the changes to the snow wolves they had been fighting. Each voicing their own hopeful interpretation of the snow wolves sudden lack of attention.
They might not have seen the chaos Scaly and Verdell were currently causing, but the sound of their battle did reach them to some extent. Allowing them to at least understand that someone or something was attacking the snow wolves, someone who didn’t come from the city they had been coming to reinforce. After all, they were all clear about the strength of the city and understood that the adventurers within the city didn’t have the ability to cause that kind of destruction.
Not to mention, those adventurers were currently trapped inside the city itself and could at most launch attacks through the magical barrier.
Keeping that in mind, their guess regarding what was behind the chaos wasn’t some powerful adventurer showing up to lend a hand. Instead, the group felt it was far more likely that another monster had ended up wandering onto the battlefield and ended up clashing with the snow wolves.
Great as this might be for them now that this powerful monster was helping them deal with the snow wolves, they would inevitably have to deal with this powerful monster capable of causing all the powerful snow wolves attacking them to shift their attention away from them and instead focus on the newly emerging threat.
From this simple fact alone, the group of trapped adventurers were almost certain that this newly emerging monster was either a powerful one at the very peak of the SS Rank, potential even surpassing the SS Rank- or another vast horde of monster like the snow wolves.
No matter which of the two it was, it was undoubtedly a problem they would have to deal with in the future.
As for letting the two enemies kill each other... Good idea, but it wouldn’t work. Stronger monsters unfortunately also tended to be smarter than weaker monsters. Especially so when it came to those working together in large groups like the Snow Wolves they were facing off against.
In case it was really another horde of monsters like the snow wolves they were dealing with, there was a good chance that after the initial clash, the leaders of the two sides would team up to first deal with them and the city behind them.
Surprisingly, the best-case scenario was that the monster causing chaos was a lone one, as it meant it was far less likely to team up with the snow wolves.
Rustle~
And as the group were left in their own thoughts while fending off the powerful snow wolves working together to slowly weaken them for an easy kill, a large portion of the stronger snow wolves that had been focused on them shuffled away from the battle before making their way in the direction of the chaos they could only hear from their current position.
Reliving the constant pressure the group of adventurers had been under, as the sudden decrease in enemies gave them a chance to breathe.
However, though they now began pushing back against the snow wolves, the fact that they were even able to do so in the first place was because the snow wolves had determined them to be the lesser threat. Shifting resources elsewhere while they were being kept locked up with the lowest possible resources required.
"No need to think about the potential danger we might find ourselves facing off against later. For now, we should try and take advantage of the situation to find a weak point we can force our way through!" Seeing through the thoughts of his companions, a gruff looking older man managed to garner the attention with a simple call out.
Though part of the reason why he managed to gather everyone’s attention also had to do with his massive frame and rough appearance making him difficult to overlook once he spoke up even amidst the constant battle against the snow wolves that hadn’t stopped since their unfortunate arrival at the city, they had been unable to enter in time.
Still, with him taking the lead, the rest of the adventurers began to slowly converge around him as they began working together to find a weak point in the encirclement the snow wolves had formed around them. Soon enough, spotting serval potential weak points they could take advantage of to charge out.
But... Considering they couldn’t just charge through the encirclement randomly and had to get close to the city wall where they would be able to better fight back against the snow wolves while outside the magical barrier, they first had to determine the direction of the city before waiting for a weak point to emerge in the direction of the city, something that the group had originally thought would take anywhere from a few minutes if not longer.
However, things didn’t always work out as one expected. "There! An opening" As just as the gruff man had called out for everyone to focus up and get ready for a chance to break the encirclement, a weakness presented itself as one of the stronger snow wolves who had originally been guarding the path leading to the city pulled away.
Whoosh-!
Although a slightly weaker snow wolf was about to jump forward to take its place and fill the gap, it was ultimately a step too slow, as the adventurers who had spent the entire time since their arrival on the defensive, unleashed all their strength in a frontal assault.
Grrr? Awwwo!?
Thud~ Ptsh!
The unfortunate replacement barely had time to react before the dozen or so powerful attacks landed on its body. Killing it just as a startled howl left its mouth. Not that the adventurers who killed it had the time to care about the now dead snow wolf, as they used the opening it had created to successfully charge out of the encirclement formed by the snow wolves.
Even with the remaining snow wolves trying to jump forward to fill the gap, it was already too late, as the group of adventurers had managed to successfully pry open the encirclement and had no intention of allowing the snow wolves to place them in a similar deadly situation any time soon.
In the first place, the only reason why these snow wolves had been able to encircle and trap them, was because they had accidentally walked past the place where the leading snow wolves had been hiding while sneakily approaching the city.
It was that unfortunate encounter that caused them to end up being trapped, though... One positive to the entire situation was the fact that their sudden arrival had ruined the snow wolves original plan of trying to sneak into the city without being noticed.
Of course, it was impossible for this to happen, but if they got to close, there would have been a very real chance some of the snow wolves managed to enter the city before the magical barrier activated, causing potential damage to the internal structure of the magical barrier within the city in the process, causing it to collapse far faster.
Back to the present, the group of adventurers that had successfully freed themselves from the snow wolf encirclement successfully made it to the city wall, their backs firmly up against the magical barrier.
"Huh? That... Dragon? A dragon!?"
"Who cares about the dragon!? Look! Isn’t there a dwarf on top of it!?"
"I... That... I don’t know..."
"Guess... The one causing trouble is an adventurer?"
"Gotta be the most unique one I have seen to date, a stout little dwarf capable of riding a dragon..."
Though, their attention wasn’t on the city behind them nor the snow wolves rushing to catch up with them. Instead, it was the sight of a fire wielding dwarf sitting on top a dragon throwing powerful magic all over the place as the dragon beneath him happily cleaved through countless snow wolves using equally terrifying magic.
The sheer destructive power of the duo working together made it understandable why the stronger snow wolves had decided those two were a greater threat than them...
