Red Maw Saga Book 1 Ash and Iron
Arc III- Chapter 9 : The Realm Beneath
The air changed as soon as they crossed the threshold. Stone giving way like petals under the command of the Ethrani as they lead them deeper.
Warmth.
Moisture.
A soft hum in the stone… like a colossal creature breathing.
The tunnel opened into a vast cavern, and Vris stopped dead.
Even Dunzok fell silent.
Even Hadrik, who’d spent his life boasting that Harrowhall’s Under-Forge was the grandest thing in the world, stood slack-jawed.
Because this place.
this Rootweb
was enormous beyond his wildest imagination...
The cavern stretched for miles, a hollowed-out world unto itself. Its vastness was almost impossible to comprehend three human cities could have stood within its bounds and still left room for forests to grow.
Above, the ceiling arched like the interior of a mountain-sized geode, studded with thick veins of amethyst that glowed in slow, shifting waves of violet and silver. From that immense height, massive roots descended like the ribs of some ancient titan. Some were as wide as bridges, twisting and braiding together to form natural pathways, staircases, and sweeping arches that connected different levels of the cavern.
Everywhere one looked, stone and root were fused together in strange harmony. Walls flowed like living bark hardened into stone and threaded through with veins of quartz. Balconies curved outward, grown from thick mineral vines that had hardened into elegant terraces. Towers rose from the cavern floor like petrified trees, their trunks spiraling upward into the dim glow above.
Between them, fungal lanterns pulsed with soft blue and green light, illuminating winding paths and terraces in gentle color. Here and there, clusters of stone flowers bloomed from the ground, their crystalline petals opening and closing in slow, rhythmic pulses, as though the cavern itself breathed.
It wasn’t architecture.
It was a living organism sculpted into a city.
Child Ethrani ran along root-bridges, laughing in chiming echoes that skipped across the cavern like bouncing water droplets. Some chased gentle mycelial creatures shaped like pale serpents or soft-bodied beetles. Others practiced small Stone-Shifts with their fingertips, reshaping pebbles into glowing amethyst petals.
For a population that looked carved from funerary stone, the Ethrani lived with astounding tranquility.
Waterfalls spilled from fissures high above, the water shimmering like liquid silver as it descended into a vast underground lake. Giant blind fish, pale as moonmilk, swam through its glowing shallows. Mossy beasts grazed peacefully along the lakeside.
It was serene.
Impossible.
Untouched by war.
And Vris, Fanglord and scourge of Harrowhall, found himself breathing easier.
He felt…
calm.
A sensation so foreign it almost hurt.
Shirae walked at his side, her root-hair glowing faintly with each step, blossoms shimmering like scattered stars across the dark strands.
The others followed at respectful distance dwarves awestruck, orcs muttering disbelief, Stone-Eaters whispering prayers.
At the lake’s edge, Shirae stopped.
A soft ripple danced across the silver surface as if greeting her.
“We call this the Mirror Well,” she said, voice soft but resonant, every word vibrating faintly through the stone.
“It remembers all who walk the Rootweb.”

Vris looked into the water.
His reflection stared back he didn’t remember that was what he looked like now.
He looked nothing like the crooked, stunted creatures that birthed him.
He had become something far more dangerous, a goblin ascendant.
Standing nearly eye-to-eye with a human, his frame is lean but powerful, built from relentless combat and monstrous evolution. His skin is ash gray with darker streaks that run like painted sigils along his arms and shoulders. His chest and abdomen are marked by scars some healed by Ravha’s silk-magic, others still raw and jagged from saints and dwarven steel.
His hair, once a dull feral grey, has transformed into a long mane of midnight black, falling past his shoulders in wild, coarse strands that reflect faint hints of crimson in firelight. It gives him a strangely regal silhouette when he stands tall.
His face retains goblin sharpness, pointed features, angular jaw, predatory grin but there is an eerie refinement to him now, as though evolution sculpted him into the warlord he was always meant to become. Almost handsome. His eyes gleam vivid, hungry red, ringed with a shadow-black edge that makes every glance feel like a threat or a promise.
His hands end in clawed nails, darker than obsidian, grown longer since consuming Maggra’s essence. When he grips Ruin or Heartfang, those claws scrape against the blades like stone on steel.
He saw a glimpse of the boy again terrified, and helpless a part of him felt a welling up of pity for who he was back then.
It was like Shirae saw it too her mouth upturned into a brief smile.
But the water didn’t recoil.
It glowed brighter.
Shirae studied his expression with an unreadable calm.
“Does it unsettle you?”
Vris exhaled slowly.
“…It’s peaceful,” he admitted.
The words tasted strange.
Vulnerable.
Soft.
“I have not known peace.”
Shirae’s eyes softened quartz-purple depths shimmering.
“Few moving souls do.”
She extended a hand toward his chest
not touching him, only hovering inches from his heart.
Her blossoms pulsed.
The cavern dimmed.
The lake stilled.
Stone trembled.
“I have seen visions,” she whispered.
“Not of your surface war.
Not of Harrowhall.
Not even of your Maw.”
Her voice dropped lower almost chanting, almost prayer.
“I saw a Shadow.
A kingdom built not on stone or root…
but on fear.”
Vris stiffened.
She continued.
“A warlord rising with an army of broken souls.
A coil of darkness that strangles the world.
A tyrant crowned in flame.”
Her gaze locked onto him with sudden, piercing clarity.
“I feared it was you.”
Vris’s throat tightened.
For a moment… just a moment… the human boy he once was flickered inside his red eyes.
“…Is it me?”
Shirae moved closer, blossoms brushing against the air around him.
Her voice became gentler.
Curious.
Warm.
“No.”
She placed her fingertips lightly on his sternum
and the stone sang.
Softly.
Deeply.
“Your heart… moves.”
“It searches.”
“It evolves.”
She inhaled, sensing him through her root-magics.
“You are not the Shadow.”
Then, after a long, reverent pause:
“You may be the one who stops it.”
Vris looked at her, stunned.
Shirae continued:
“A uniter of moving souls.
A breaker of stillness.
One who can bind earth, stone, claw, and spirit.”
Her blossoms brightened.
“I believe you are meant to be more than a scourge.”
Vris swallowed.
“…And you know this how?”
Her lips curved softly.
“Because the Rootweb whispers your name.”
She extended her hand toward him fully now.
“ Walk with me deeper, Fanglord.
There is more you must learn.”
And for the first time in a very long time…
Vris felt hope, terror, and awe all at once.
