Red Maw Saga Book 1 Ash and Iron

Arc III- Chapter 8: Echoes

  • Next Chapter

The tunnels beneath Harrowhall had always been dark.

But these tunnels…

These were silent.

Not the comfortable kind of silence the kind you could breathe in, touch, understand.

This was the silence of a place that did not want to be found.

Vris walked at the head of the party, claws resting lightly on Ruin’s hilt. His tattoos pulsed faintly reacting to something in the deep stone.

Behind him lumbered Dunzok and two dozen Blackgrin orcs, grim-faced and eager for a fight.

The Stone-Eater dwarves marched in disciplined rows, pick-hammers and rune-chisels lit by blue glowstones.

Hadrik walked close to Vris, face tight with worry.

“These tunnels ain’t on any dwarven map, Fanglord,” he muttered.

“We carved the mountain, aye. But we never carved this.

Vris sniffed the air.

Ash.

Fungus.

Stone.

And something else.

Something alive, but not like goblins, dwarves, or wargs.

Something older.

“Hold the line!”

Hadrik raised a clenched fist, halting the formation.

The air trembled not from sound, but from movement.

A whisper of vibration through the soles of their boots.

A gentle ripple along the tunnel walls.

He pressed his ear to the stone.

There.

A murmur.

Soft.

Layered.

Like multiple voices speaking from inside the rock.

His eyes widened.

“Stone’s speakin’…” he breathed. “That ain’t natural.”

Dunzok snorted.

“Maybe the stones tell the dwarf he’s ugly.”

Hadrik ignored him.

Because now he could feel it:

something walking parallel to them, hidden behind the right-hand wall… moving at the same pace as Vris’s war-party.

A mirroring patrol.

Silent. Ghostlike. Unseen.

His voice hushed.

“Fanglord… we’re bein’ shadowed.”

Vris hissed softly, raising a hand.

The orcs quieted.

The dwarves stiffened.

From the stone itself, a soft violet glow pulsed…

then another…

then another…

And the wall unfurled.

Not crumbled.

Not cracked.

It unfolded like petals of stone peeling back.

Shapes emerged graceful, tall, pale as ash-stone.

Their hair flowed like black roots threaded with amethyst bloom-light.

Ethrani.

Their limbs shifted subtly stone-hardening at the forearms, fingertips turning to curved mineral blades.

One stepped forward.

Her voice came as a layered whisper like roots brushing stone.

“Surface-breakers.”

Her eyes shimmered with violet quartz.

“You tread near the Rootweb.”

Vris didn’t reach for his weapons.

Not yet.

“We fortify what we have conquered,” he stated calmly.

“We dig to make this mountain ours.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“The mountain remembers its owners.”

“You are not they.”

Hadrik growled under his breath.

“We are now bloody Ethrani, Vris.. Unnatural if you ask me.. Stonewitches in the deep I wouldn’t trust em…”

Her eyes flicked to him and, strangely, softened.

“Stone-Eater.

Your ancestors once sealed these halls.”

Hadrik froze.

“Sealed… against what?”

The Ethrani princess for her bearing could be no lesser lifted one stone-shifting arm and drew a single line in the ash.

A warning.

The tunnel behind the Ethrani princess darkened.

Truly darkened as if swallowing the glowstones.

Then came the sound:

Click.

Click.

Not claws on stone.

Not footsteps.

Teeth.

Chattering.

A figure emerged:

Tall. Emaciated.

Skin stretched tight like pale fungus.

Four jointed limbs ending in jagged bone.

Face masked by a natural bone plate with an expression frozen in a silent scream.

Its eyes hollow pits.

Its mouth a ring of clattering teeth.

Hollowborn.

Vris felt the air change.

The Ethrani stiffened.

The Stone-Eaters swore in dwarven.

Even Dunzok went quiet.

The princess stepped forward.

“Now you understand.”

The Hollowborn screeched a sound that vibrated the stone itself and made Hadrik clutch his head.

More chittering echoes answered from deeper within the dark.

Shirae raised her stone-arm blade.

“We give warning, Fanglord.”

“These tunnels are hunted.”

“And whatever hunts us… hungers now for you.”

Vris slowly drew Ruin.

Then Heartfang.

His tattoos flared red across his back.

He bared his teeth in a feral grin.

“Good.”

“Let it come.”

The first Hollowborn hit like a hurtling pickaxe.

It dropped from the ceiling weightless, silent until the last heartbeat, when its teeth clattered like a rattling death rattle.

“SHIELD UP!” Hadrik roared.

But too late.

The creature’s bone-blade arm punched through a Stone-Eater dwarf’s cuirass, lifting him off the ground before hurling him aside like a discarded toy.

Another Hollowborn scuttled along the wall, limbs bending at impossible angles.

Two more poured from a fissure like pale, emaciated nightmares with fungus-riddled ribs.

Hadrik’s blood chilled.

“Gods preserve us… the old tales were true.”

These were the things dwarven grandmothers warned children about.

Things sealed under stone, ages before Harrowhall’s founding.

The Hollowborn.

Vris lunged first.

Ruin screeched as it cut into a Hollowborn’s bone-chest, but instead of bleeding, it hissed white spores drifting from the wound.

It didn’t flinch.

It simply slammed two bladed limbs down like scissors.

Vris twisted, but one blade grazed his shoulder burning cold, like touching immensely cold ice.

Heartfang sang as he countered, sparks erupting violently when its black edge met the Hollowborn’s bone-mask.

Then Vris’s eyes widened.

The creature wasn’t afraid.

Not of him.

Not of Heartfang.

Not even of pain.

That was new.

And dangerous.

More chattering echoed from the tunnels.

A full pack.

“FORM! FORM ON THE FANG LORD!” Dunzok thundered.

The orcs slammed into a tight semi-circle.

Dwarves braced shields, axes held high.

But the Hollowborn didn’t charge.

They flowed, weaving along walls and ceiling, surrounding the war-party with impossible grace.

A soft violet flash appeared infront of the Fanglord.

A whisper of stone.

Princess Shirae burst forward, root-hair blazing with amethyst light. Her arm Stone-Shifted mid-motion into a long, curved quartz blade.

She moved like a dancer, like flowing water, like a ripple in living stone.

“Careful, watch your left side!”

Her voice vibrated through the earth itself.

Vris responded without hesitation.

They fell into an unnatural, unspoken rhythm as if the mountain itself taught them the pattern.

Vris ducked as Shirae’s root-blade swept past, cleaving a Hollowborn’s forelimbs at the joint.

He stabbed upward, Heartfang plunging into its ribcage.

Black veins cracked across the bone-mask.

Still it fought.

Vris snarled.

Shirae stepped closer, violet eyes flicking to him.

“Do not let them breathe on you.

Their breath devours memory.”

Before Vris could ask what that meant, another Hollowborn lunged at them both.

Shirae thrust her root-blade into the ground stone exploding upward in a jagged barricade that smashed the creature mid-air.

Vris finished it with Ruin, severing its spine.

For one chilling heartbeat, the cavern fell silent.

Then the pack screamed.

A Hollowborn dropped directly behind Dunzok the orc warlord had just felled one of the strange bone creatures.

He spun too late.

Its jaw unhinged like a serpent, rows of clicking teeth aimed at his throat.

Dunzok roared and brought his axe up but the Hollowborn’s bone-limb pinned his elbow, forcing his arm back with monstrous pressure.

He felt bone crack.

“FANGLORD!” Dunzok bellowed.

Before the jaws closed, the creature jerked sideways

As Hadrik Veinborn slammed into it, burying a rune-chisel into its eye socket.

The Hollowborn screeched, flailing.

Hadrik didn’t stop.

He swung again.

And again.

And again.

“NOT TODAY, YA SUNSTARVED WORM!”

He caved in the bone-mask with a final blow, panting as the Hollowborn collapsed in a heap of pale limbs.

Dunzok stared at him, shocked.

“…Damned Dwarf saved me.”

Hadrik spat white ooze from his mouth.

“Aye, an’ don’t you forget it.”

Three Hollowborn converged one from the ceiling, two from the walls.

Their teeth clattered in maddening rhythm.

Shirae planted her foot, driving her hand into the stone.

“Fanglord now!”

The floor rippled like water.

Roots burst upward thorns, stone-spikes, corded vines the Rootweb’s fury unleashed.

The trap impaled one Hollowborn entirely, skewering it mid-lunge. Another had its legs bound by root-snakes and was dragged screaming into the ground.

The last Hollowborn leapt at Shirae.

Vris intercepted, Heartfang clashing against bone-blades, sparks spilling like angry fire.

Ruin plunged into its throat.

Heartfang followed through the mask.

Finally finally it died.

The cavern fell quiet.

A real quiet this time.

Princess Shirae turned to the Fanglord.

Her amethyst blossoms flickered gently, dimming after battle.

“You fight like one shaped by the stone,” she murmured.

“A moving soul.

A breaker of stillness.”

Vris wiped blood and spores from Heartfang.

“And you fight like the deep itself.”

She inclined her head.

“Then come deeper.

You have earned safe passage.

My people will want to see you.”

Hadrik stepped forward, pale.

“Fanglord… y-ye’d better hear her out. If more o’ those Hollowborn roam—”

Shirae raised a hand, and the tunnel ahead opened, roots pulling apart like an iris revealing a vast amethyst-lit cavern.

A world beneath a world.

The Rootweb.

She extended her hand toward Vris not in submission…

but in invitation.

“Walk with me, Fanglord.

There is much the stone wishes to tell you.”

And Vris, for once, felt the faintest tremor of uncertainty.

Not fear.

Curiosity.
